  1. Thanks for a first mention of 5x Monk in this thread, too. I listened to it at the end of a particularly long and exhausting work shift the other night and was soothed. An endlessly fascinating and engaging listen.

  2. from todays NYTimes:

"Apple Corps and EMI announced on Tuesday that the much-postponed remasters would be released on individual stereo CDs and in two boxed sets — one stereo, the other mono — on Sept. 9, the same day the Beatles edition of Rock Band, the music video game, is scheduled for release."

I just want to know: How damn much are these boxed sets?!

Smells an awful lot like 500 bucks (for the two) to me!

Basically. Beatles CDs have been the most expensive on the market for 22 years, and I don't see that changing now. Seeing as how the 4-disc Capitol boxes retailed in the 80 dollar range, I think $200+ per box sounds about right.

  3. These have come out late spring/early summer the past few years, so the time is coming up. What do you think, will there be some? Anyone have an inside scoop?

To be honest, though, I haven't been too big on some of the recent choices. Stuff like the Farmer and Gillespie titles from last year seemed like they might have worked better as Mosaic singles or something. I'd like to see some more actual Blue Note music in the mix...

  4. Agreed about Konitz and Giuffre, but for the record, Thesis and Fusion are owned by ECM, so those would be no-gos.

I really enjoy my LPR of The Easy Way, so I would certainly love to hear more from the period.

ECM does not own those Giuffre dates. They licensed them from Universal/Verve.

Hm, I guess I got the wrong information, then. I asked about the possibility of those coming out as Originals, and that's the answer I got. Thanks for the clarification.

  5. Just a heads up, this now OOP set has been pulled from active sale on Amazon, with only used copies left. As far as I know, this is one of the only titles from the 2008 BN deletions to be fully eliminated from retail sale up to this point. So if you'd like a copy before the used prices spike (which can't be long now...) I'd go for it, whether it's through Amazon or some other site.

  6. I would go out on a limb and say there is probably close to zero chance that they'll make a set based on fan suggestion. If we've thought "Hey wouldn't it be great if ...'s recordings for ... Records were re-released," it's a pretty safe bet someone at Mosaic has had the same thought. I'm sure they've poured through every catalog they have access to, considering all the possibilities for future sets. I think it's extremely unlikely that one of us would make a suggestion that starts the proverbial wheels turning. Any resemblance between suggested and actual sets is probably just coincidental.

    You never know, though...

With the MJQ suggestion, isn't most of their Atlantic material still in print?

Sure, but for instance, so is a lot all of the material in the Gerry Mulligan, Shank/Cooper, and Zeitlin sets. It's more a matter of having them in one place with superior sound and good annotation.
