Thanks for a first mention of 5x Monk in this thread, too. I listened to it at the end of a particularly long and exhausting work shift the other night and was soothed. An endlessly fascinating and engaging listen.

from todays NYTimes:
"Apple Corps and EMI announced on Tuesday that the much-postponed remasters would be released on individual stereo CDs and in two boxed sets — one stereo, the other mono — on Sept. 9, the same day the Beatles edition of Rock Band, the music video game, is scheduled for release."
I just want to know: How damn much are these boxed sets?!
Smells an awful lot like 500 bucks (for the two) to me!
Basically. Beatles CDs have been the most expensive on the market for 22 years, and I don't see that changing now. Seeing as how the 4-disc Capitol boxes retailed in the 80 dollar range, I think $200+ per box sounds about right.

Thanks. Those archived links go a long way in answering some of my questions.
Looking at this, I can't help but feel I've missed out on the majority of the good sets (got into jazz 2 years ago). There are only a couple big boxes on my wishlist from the current pack.

For the record, some sets are available on Amazon in the sub-$200 range.
I also just missed out on an $86 Mingus Candid at an online used record shop. Shoulda been quicker.
-
There's a Bill Evans 1980 over $500 right now...
-
If anybody is still really interested, this is just £17.99 (£53 off) at hmv.com.
All Columbia jazz titles are massively reduced on Amazon, with (mostly non-Miles) single discs going for 6.99, and box sets marked down, too.

I was wondering if anyone had access to or could link me to some sort of Mosaic discography that is more comprehensive than the list of OOP sets on the official website. I would be curious to know when each of these past boxes came out, and when they ceased being available.

These have come out late spring/early summer the past few years, so the time is coming up. What do you think, will there be some? Anyone have an inside scoop?
To be honest, though, I haven't been too big on some of the recent choices. Stuff like the Farmer and Gillespie titles from last year seemed like they might have worked better as Mosaic singles or something. I'd like to see some more actual Blue Note music in the mix...

Agreed about Konitz and Giuffre, but for the record, Thesis and Fusion are owned by ECM, so those would be no-gos.
I really enjoy my LPR of The Easy Way, so I would certainly love to hear more from the period.
ECM does not own those Giuffre dates. They licensed them from Universal/Verve.
Hm, I guess I got the wrong information, then. I asked about the possibility of those coming out as Originals, and that's the answer I got. Thanks for the clarification.

Definitely the black box on the top of mine as well, with the Herman, Prez, and Stitt ones right behind. Hopefully I can afford to grab it next month.

Just a heads up, this now OOP set has been pulled from active sale on Amazon, with only used copies left. As far as I know, this is one of the only titles from the 2008 BN deletions to be fully eliminated from retail sale up to this point. So if you'd like a copy before the used prices spike (which can't be long now...) I'd go for it, whether it's through Amazon or some other site.

Wow, I feel dumb. I misread the e-mail (which was laid out quite poorly, to be fair). My set is marked as 'shipped'.
-
Why did I not get one, then? I ordered on the 15th. Is availability regional?
-
Ooh, thought of one the other night:
The Complete Impulse! Recordings of Archie Shepp and Marion Brown.
I would at least like to have a Marion Brown select, but imagine a box with all of their respective I! albums....
-
My order was cancelled due to lack of stock. Bummer.

I would go out on a limb and say there is probably close to zero chance that they'll make a set based on fan suggestion. If we've thought "Hey wouldn't it be great if ...'s recordings for ... Records were re-released," it's a pretty safe bet someone at Mosaic has had the same thought. I'm sure they've poured through every catalog they have access to, considering all the possibilities for future sets. I think it's extremely unlikely that one of us would make a suggestion that starts the proverbial wheels turning. Any resemblance between suggested and actual sets is probably just coincidental.
You never know, though...
With the MJQ suggestion, isn't most of their Atlantic material still in print?
Sure, but for instance, so is a lot all of the material in the Gerry Mulligan, Shank/Cooper, and Zeitlin sets. It's more a matter of having them in one place with superior sound and good annotation.
-
My suggestion of the moment: The Complete Atlantic Recordings of the Modern Jazz Quartet.
Why?
Because I like the MJQ, feel they are underappreciated, and these are (in my opinion) their finest recordings, sparingly available. It would be nice to have them all in one place, properly annotated, etc.

Dammit. Bad news.

Of all the OOP Mosaics, this is my most sought after. I hope to own it one day, but the $300+ ebay prices have this looking like a relative impossibility. I guess the Collectables will have to do for this lifetime.

There's something very agressive and cavernous in the sound of this RVG that I'm not sure I like. I was wondering if the OJC has a better, drier sound? I love the subtle sound of the OJC of Waldron's The Quest by the same group. Any opinions?
-
Yeah, what in the world is going on here? I was thinking about maybe keeping an eye out for the Cecil Taylor Candid box, until I saw it fetch well over 300 on ebay. Just wrong. Even the Giuffre box, which is rather ubiquitous is exploding in price. Disappointing.

There was a Mosaic Select of the Elvin material, but it's OOP.
Huh?
Oh. . . there was a full blown box set of the material, out of print for some time. But not a Select. Right?
Right.

If that's the case, I hope they don't bother.
