  1. The Bethlehems are excellent imo. As is Keys West originally on Capitol ( I have the Affinity vinyl).

It's a pity Keys West wasn't included in the Kenton Presents Mosaic set.

Available on the Fresh Sound label

  2. Looks like this will be rip/needle drop from another pirate? 4LP set (BAT 5/8) called "The Complete Birdland Sessions" plus extra titles hopefully - it was supposed to have been released as a 200 ltd edn set (Lord Discography)

  3. There are a few on the list that take my fancy

Vi Redd (Bird Call), Monday night At Birdland 1 & 2, Blakey's Cu-Bop & Golden Boy, Byrd/Gryce Jazz Lab (Jubilee), Hawkins The Gilded Hawk (Capitol), Les McCann In NY & Sings (PJ)

Yes, some of these were released years ago, are deleted & go for higher prices on Amazon or have also been reissued by the Andorrans but I would prefer to get 24bit remasterings than "needle drops", especially with the way the Australian dollar is at present - hovering at parity with the $US & holding its own with the Yen

Have the UA Vi Redd Bird Call sessions ever had a digital release except for a few titles included on the Mighty Quinn Roy Ayers CD?

  4. If you live in the us,ordering from amazon.uk rather than harmonia will cost you less. the amazon prices in the uk have a vat price built into. When you go through the ordering process you can see that the price is reduced once you plugged in your u.s. shipping address.

similarly for Australia - ordered my Dixon set this way (Grooves-Inc don't have the Dixon & Russell sets on their database)

  5. I'd agree with everyone re Blowitoutahere - prompt & efficient service -> the only downside is international customers can't buy directly from their website

similarly good dealings (Amazon & directly via their websites) with Moviemars, import CD's (does anyone know why they will not ship OJC/Concord CD's out of the states - they have the best prices on these), Newbury Comics though shipping time from Newbury can be quite long to Australia (parcels appear to come via New Zealand)

My favourite online dealer at present is GROOVES-INC (Swiss based - no international shipping charges) - best place to get the recent Soul Note/Black Saint box sets (except for the Dixon & Russell's) & other euro/UK labels. Their OJC's/Concords (euro pressings) are also much cheaper than the states.

Another Amazon site I'd like to mention is the Classical Music superstore -> great place to get the Naxos Jazz icons DVD box sets (excellent after sales service - recently got the 1st box set as a birthday present & the Monk disc was faulty -> after a single email & new replacement disc was promptly shipped out)

Can anyone clarify the difference between a standard CD & a promo/cutout - is there actually any difference in sound quality between the Cd's?

  6. How about...

THE COMPLETE BETHLEHEM, JAZZ MAN, ARGO AND UNITED ARTISTS RECORDINGS OF HOWARD MCGHEE

    What a great idea!

    Seconded. Or thirded.

Fourth'd. McGhee seems to me like the perfect Mosaic artist--outstanding musician but somehow never quite getting the acclaim and recognition he deserved.

    Fifth'd :excited::g:D:P

also, what about a Freddie Roach Blue Note MS (it may be a bit more than 3CD's though?) -last time i mentioned this to Michael C he felt that it would not sell well enough

  7. If you don't already have it get the "Jazz Scene" 2 CD set. Great music. Carney, Bird, Hawkins (Picasso) various modern big bands etc. Beautiful replica of collectors item from the 40's.

    Remco

    :tup

wholeheartedly agree - picked up my copy a few months ago; excellent sound restoration & lots of unreleased material (or stuff that was only released on 78's or 10" LP's

  8. While we are on the topic,I was was wondering if there are any opinions out there re a Mosaic Select of his Blue Note work(may be too many LP's for a 3CD set but I thought there were 5?) . I contacted Michael Cuscuna a few years back & his reply was that it would not sell in enough quantity to make it a viable project.

  9. AFAIK it hasn't been on CD. It is three sides of the LP so there is a lot of it! Have you heard it? In my opinion it doesn't stand up too well overall so was never going to be a priority for CD. That said, it is a piece of genuine free-for-all avant-gardisme and is certainly of interest. I know others find more in it than I do.

No, I havn't heard it - I thought Circulus (US version) was a single LP & the three titles took up approximately 15mins but I realise now it's a 2 LP set with the quartet pieces taking up over 46mins - that's why they weren't put on the Early Circle CD!

    Drone 22:25

    Quartet Piece No. 1 16:13

    Quartet Piece No. 2 17:33

    Quartet Piece No. 3 12:25

    Percussion Piece 5:52

  10. Has the August 21, 1970 Corea/Braxton/Holland/Altschul session (Quartet piece Nos 1-3) ever been released on CD - was originally released on the BN LP Circulus (LA882)

It appears to be the only Corea BN/SS session not to have been digitalised.

I'm surprised it wasn't put on the Early Circle CD (84465) - that disc contains the 13 & 19 Oct, 1970 sessions & is only 55mins long

  11. Reinier

    many thanks for the info/scan

that does confirm my findings that these two titles are from a different session not listed in the Blue Note Discography (1988 edn - don't have the most recent version - maybe it has been corrected?)

    SSS-7-126 Birdland Bounce (US title - BN 1611) = Brand's Essence (UK title - Esquire 10-115)

    SSS-7-127 Leapin' In London (US title - BN 1611) = Marshall's Plan (UK title - Esquire 10-115)
