Battle of Bushwick: Valedictorian v Board of Ed
neveronfriday replied to maren's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I've also been closely following this story. Sometimes I wish - although things are a whole lot better here - that our students here in Germany would have the guts to do what Tiffany did. Somehow our educational system is teaching too many kids to put up with what's wrong or shut up. Dissatisfaction with the system is rampant, but it's only talked about behind closed doors (or on the political plain, on which it is watered down to easily consumable [empty] slogans for the public). And, our current government isn't actually helping one single bit with its completely erratic policy which is aimed at curing the symptoms and not the disease. Cheers! -
Yes. Yes. Yes! Thanks for that one, Kevin. It can't be repeated often enough! Cheers!

Anyone else here that prefers formats such as MPC? I haven't ripped anything to MP3 (for myself) in ages. MPC is my format, comes close to lossless quality, albeit creating bigger file sizes. With decent speakers, MPC is the format of my dreams (was introduced to it by some German freaks about a year or two ago). Cheers!

I think this the only jazz board on which musicians are identified by their hairlines. That's why I love it here. Cheers!

Yes, and if you haven't indulged yet, buy this set ... it's one of Mosaic's best and my fave by far. Cheers!

Nacogdoches, Texas, is where Joe R. Lansdale is from (AFAIK). One of my fave writers. Cool. Cheers! -
That would be me, myself and I + 1. I'm 4. I think I'll assimilate myself. Cheers!

It's currently on sale on eBay Germany (as of now around 60 EURO or so), but that's too much Haley for me. Cheers! -
Bill Haley ... looking for good remastering
neveronfriday replied to neveronfriday's topic in Miscellaneous Music
According to the liner notes, the following drummers played on these sessions: Billy Guesak (drums) on: (We're Gonna) Rock Around the Clock Thirteen Women Dick Richards (drums) on: Shake, Rattle and Roll A.B.C. Boogie Happy baby Dim Dim the Lights (I Want Some Atmosphere) Birth of the Boogie Mambo Rock Two Hound Dogs Razzle-Dazzle Ralph Jones or Don Raymond (drums) on: R-O-C-K Rock-A-Beatin'-Boogie The Saints Rock 'N Roll Burn That Candle See You Later, Alligator The Paper Boy (on Main Street, U.S.A.) Ralph Jones (drums) on: Rudy's Rock Hot Dog Buddy Buddy Rip It Up Don't Knock the Rock I'm assuming these notes are correct, but you know how it is: maybe the producer sneaked in another drummer? Anyone have any info on this? Cheers! -
Me, myself and I want one. Cheers!

The Definitive, Jazz Factory etc. quality check
neveronfriday replied to neveronfriday's topic in Re-issues
Keep 'em coming. Someone also PM'd me re the Basie discs which seem to be quite good. Thanks for that. I'm thinking of raiding the freshsoundrecords.com website after I get paid for one of the bigger web projects I'm finishing at the moment, and a couple of kilos of CDs should be possible. I'll be using this thread (and any more PMs) as a kind of "shopping list". So, if you can recommend any other sets or single discs, please do. Cheers! -
I always thought someone should record a song entitled "All Heads Turn When the Hunt Goes By". I'd like that.

The Definitive, Jazz Factory etc. quality check
neveronfriday replied to neveronfriday's topic in Re-issues
There must be a lot more people here who have some Definitive discs? Let's hear what they are like, sound quality and all. Who's got the Basie discs and can comment on the quality? Cheers! -
Please tell me you were playing with Photoshop again. Please. Pretty please.

Bent was a great musician and an incredibly kind man. I saw him live so many times that I can't even remember how many. We had many a talk in the past here or there, the last time at the Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2002 at which he radiated good humour and played fantastically. He always joined up with "NIELS JØRGEN STEEN'S A-TEAM" for the annual big band bash in "Kongens Have" (he always got the best laughs) and played with his quartet all around town. He was scheduled again for this year. Another great player gone. I'll miss him.

Hi everyone, I'm European. I don't have much cash to feed my jazz habit. I'm aware of the copyright discussion. That said, it seems to me that, often quietly, a whole bunch of people on this board are buying Definitive, Jazz Factory etc. discs as offered by freshsoundrecords.com or whoever. I've started that too. I don't have all that many, but searching this board here, I often get brief glimpses of someone saying this or that "reissue" sounds great or didn't live up to the buyer's expectation. Well, I wouldn't mind hearing from those people who have releases by the above-mentioned (or other) labels (under that umbrella) and can comment on the sound quality. As we all know, some of the releases were ripped off from other much more pricey box sets, some are exclusive to Definitive and yet others are, well, a shoddy job. So, if you dare, let's hear it for or against these "reissues" quality-wise (not copyright wise ... that, I think, has been covered). Three releases I'm very happy with are these: Bob Brookmeyer: Complete 1953-1954 Quintet Studio Recordings with Stan Getz. Definitive 2004 (2 CD). Good sound, maybe not as good as the two below. Chet Baker. The Original Quartet, Sextett & Septett with Russ Freeman. Complete 1953-1954 Studio Recordings. Definitive 2004 (2 CD). Great sound. I really enjoy these. Chet Baker/Gerry Mulligan. The Original Chet Baker & Gerry Mulligan Quartet. 4 CD Complete Recordings (4 CD). Definitive 2004. Ditto for the sound here. Sounds excellent to me. I have ordered their (3 CD) Jazz in Hollywood box because it was recommended elsewhere on this board recently. Cheers! P.S.: I'm especially wondering about their Basie issues: Complete Original American Decca Recordings - 3 Cd Set Complete Original American Rca Victor Recordings - 3 Cd Set Complete 1941-1951 Columbia Recordings -3 Cds Set Complete 1936-1941 Columbia Recordings - 4 Cd Set Can anyone comment on these? I'm mostly interested in the sound quality as compared to other releases.
