  1. I used to not dig the Muse dates as much. However, as of the last 6 months or so I've really grown to like them a lot. Especially some the of stuff that wasn't really reissued on the "Steady Comin' At Ya" CD compilation,(even though I liked that a lot as well). What am I saying....I don't know! I like it all I guess. I'm partial to the early stuff just because it's what I stumbled onto first I guess. Plus, the recording techniques were better on the earlier stuff. I used to hate the slow speed sound, but dig it now too. What's your favorite DP album B3-er?
  2. O.K., Time to give Don some god damn props! Maybe the best organist ever in many ways. Although there's really no "best" in music, Don certainly has intrigued me since Day 1. My first exposure to his playing was through a copy of "The Exciting New Organ Of" LP I stumbled across in a used bin. Up until that point, the only organists I had heard were alot of Jimmy Smith, McDuff and McGriff. Well, Don blew my mind the moment I put the needle to the vinyl. And it's still blown. Along with Patton, Don is surely my favorite of the organists.
  3. I heard that Lucky was one of the first American jazz musicians in Europe. He supposedly really whipped a lot of the better players into shape.
  4. Damn, I had the chance to see him when I lived in Boston for a short while. Blew it, and now I'm jealous anytime I see a mention of his live show! Well, have fun....Wish I could be there!
  5. I like it here. I hope the fact that's it's run by an organist doesn't run people like hardbop off. But, I think the AAJ board just isn't going to be as accomadating. Once I saw the BM pledged topics I knew it wasn't going to be all that. He seems a bit wary of us all although he's been very nice. But what's the downside here? I don't see it. Pure freedom without any hidden agenda by the board host.
  6. I've actually got a Patton discography. I'll post it when I dig it up and have a few minutes....
  7. I always think of those politic threads as a "enter at your own risk." You have to really have a thick skin to want to go there. Most don't and it gets ugly real fast. But for those with thick skins who love to challenge each other....I don't know, to each his own. I ALWAYS avoid those things. The last thing I want from my computer is stress. Maybe the best way to do it is to have a stricktly "political" thread, isolated from the rest. To have it at all is a risk I guess. I don't know, I just stick to the music. But I like the idea of people being able to discuss any topic. Freedom of speech in it's purest form. I guess whatever keeps B3-er away from police duties the most is what should be done.
  8. Some is downright too much. But it's so wild and overwhelming you have to dig it. There was absolutely no "edit" function in Jimmy's brain at that point. His later playing seems to be a refinement of his genius. Groovin at Smalls is his genius laid bare, puking from the speakers. That MF was crazy.
  9. wesbad, I think "Groovin' At Small's Paradise" may be Jimmy's ultimate tour de force. His playing is so far and above the comprehension of mere mortals that it boggles the mind. Great. The sound quality if pretty good imho. The organ sounds rough, wild and loud! The guitar isn't far behind in the wild sounding department. Distorted, one of the lost joys of jazz guitar. I'm sure B3-er will have some comments but that's my little 2 cents. Get it!
  10. Hey Jim, I think the place is great. I've read a few recent posts on the AAJ board from the moderator and I'm beginning to get a sense there's going to be a very tight-jazz only, keep it clean thing happening over there. Some nervousness on their part. Plus, the catagories they are suggesting suck. It's something like : Polls, Individual artists, music theory and help, and some other thing. It doesn't look promising. As you know most people left because there wasn't going to be room for people to discuss other things besides jazz. Politics is given a lot of lip service, but Sports, Movies, T.V. and other things have also been very important to people. In other words, in the end you might have everybody over here from the BNBB. I can see it happening very easily. You've done a great job, and I for one think this is a very good place to land. The AAJ board may have been a life raft, but your board may end up being dry land.
  11. All those Blue Notes from that period are just killer. As good as jazz organ gets or ever will get. His concept is still unfathomable, even beyond organ itself. Name a musician period who plays in the capacity that Jimmy did and you'd be hard-pressed beyond Coltrane. Genius stuff. If he played another instrument besides organ he would be a lot better known. Sad but true I think. Organ is jazz's biatch.
  12. Rhoda is one bad player. A lot of her recorded work is available from www.dustygroove.com at very reasonable prices (9 or 10 bucks a piece). On some of those things she's playing with just a drummer (Kenny Clarke), and that's not easy to do and make interesting music. She does it. Great player and someone who hasn't gotten much attention since she's lived in France since the 70's I believe.
  13. Jimmy, My favorite Jimmy Smith record, and I know it's cliche', has got to be "The Sermon." Or now that the CD version sessions have been combined and re-sequenced, it might be "Houseparty." Those two kill me. Midnight Special is better than Chicken Shack IMHO, I'm with you on that one.
  14. Hey, since J.O.S got his own corner....got to see my man Patton on the board! Rule number one at John Patton Corner... 1. Get Lou Donaldons' "The Natural Soul."
  15. Hey Jim, Soul Stream in the house! Man, you really got it going on over here. If everyone from the BNBB came this was, could your site handle the load? I know nothing about wesites, ect., so that may seem like a dumb question. Everyone's at AllAboutJazz as you've seen. However, I don't see why a second migration might not head this way. It all depends on who can handle the huddled masses best. Obviously your sight has the best potential for unencumbered discussion of all things jazz and not. Great job, and fast! Thanks. Is this forum up and working so to speak? Noticed I had to come in the back door as oppossed to coming through the website.
