  1. Can't see how you could have missed on this one.

    Easy enough - it's a bootleg.

Not that I know anything about stuff like that... ;)

    Jim,

I am not saying I don't know how he missed this one, rather, I can't see how he could miss with this one since it is probably very good. Just a point of clarification.

Nice to know it is a bootleg. Wondered how I had missed a Harold Land!

    Thanks for the info.

  2. underground,

Never heard this one before but Harold Land is one of my favorites. I think he is another of the most underrated players of his day. I have never heard anything that he did that was a disappointment. His other efforts with Hutcherson were very enjoyable.

Can't see how you could have missed on this one. Be sure and let us know. :g:g

  3. The following are really good ones:

    Donald Byrd---------Blackjack

    Donald Byrd---------Kofi

    Paul Chambers-----Chambers Music

    Johnny Griffin ------Introducing Johnny Griffin

Duke Jordan ------ Flight to Jordan

    Art Blakey-----------Ritual

And I just happen to have them for trade on this board!

    Take a look......

  4. On first lesson, this did nothing for me, as I spent a lot of time thinking "WTF????"

On second, third, and subsequent listenings, this has wedged its way to the top of my favorite Larry Young albums. There's just so much here to dig,

Lots of great subtleties and nuances to be discovered on repeated listenings.

    Great re-release indeed!

I had the same reaction, Big Al. Since I had heard so much about this one I was surprised by my first reaction. I didn't think too much of it at first, but the more I listened I realized that Young was exploring some really different s*% here. It is so unique for the organ. I am really into it now and agree that it is probably one of my favorite Larry Young's. Like Big Al said, it is subtle, but you realize that Young is doing with the organ what the really good players do with the trumpet, sax etc.

  5. Just wanted to say thanks to everyone. I went ahead and picked this one up and it is typical, high quality, Sonny trio material. Nothing out of the ordinary but I think that is what makes him so good,he makes it seem so easy! Good, bluesy, piano work.

Thanks again for all the input and help.

  6. I only listen to the good stuff.

As a great man once said, Hell Yea!!!

I wish I could say I only listen to the good stuff but unfortunately I have listened to my share of the bad stuff as well. And sometimes the bad stuff later turns out to be the good stuff. It does get complicated, doesn't it! :g:g

Like the wise men say, it is the journey, not the destination.

  7. Recently ran across this CD and seemed to remember some info. on this board that all of this material had been incorporated into his US domestic releases. Can someone tell me if the material included on Standards is also found on his other releases or if it is material which has not been released in any other format in the states. I have most of Sonny's material and don't really want to duplicate.

    Thanks for the help!

  9. Spontooneous,

Not directed at you, but maybe it's like President Clinton used to say when he ran against the first President Bush.

    It's the Economy Stupid

Just a thought. People don't have the bucks and the mood has changed. All of the charities are hurting. Not just in Kansas City but everywhere.

Otherwise, I agree with much that has been said here already.

  11. If you are only interested in the recent releases, then Claude is probably right, CD Universe looks like the best. If you are looking for RVG's and earlier releases I would try alldirect.com. Prices are great, selection pretty good, and I have not been disappointed with the service.

  12. I have enjoyed this one immensely. I couldn't tell if it was simply because I was not previously familar with the record or what. I think you hit on it for me. Free for All has always been one of my favorite Blakely's. I love that lineup and it is the same one here. This collection of Messengers has a high degree of energy and creativity IMO. I guess I just really like the lineup and the fact that the music was new to me only makes it that much better. :g:g

  13. Guess it also depends on what you want to consider jazz. I got into what was then called contemporary jazz. It was Bob James, David Sanborn, Grover Washington, Joe Sample and Crusaders, etc. That was in my mid-twenties. Followed that for a long time. When the music turned to "smooth jazz" I started looking for a place to go. Went backwards and discovered Miles, Coltrane, Morgan, etc. I was like a sponge and couldn't get enough. I was probably into my forties before the transformation was complete. So what do you want to call jazz? All I can say is that I listened to much of the pop/rock/new country genre since my early twenties.
