  1. I think Back to the Tracks is my favorite Tina Brooks date.

I agree with catesta on this one. Back to the Tracks is my favorite Tina Brooks as well so far. I was a little disappointed in The Waiting Game but I think it was because my expectations were so high after purchasing the other two. I keep waiting for True Blue to come out as an RVG. I refuse to pay the out of sight prices for that one and will be contented to wait.( Hope you are listening Bluenote!:angry:

I would not hesitate to get both of these. They are really outstanding.

  2. All of those previously mentioned, Serge, Pepper, Mulligan, are really great. One name that I would like to throw into the mix though is Gil Melle. I had never heard his stuff until the 10" series came out but man he was really creative and had a great sound on bari.IMHO

If you haven't listened to Gil, give him a listen. I think he merits consideration.

  3. No negative slant intended toward the names mentioned below:

We often discuss the remastering styles of Van Gelder & McMaster. Both men are good and not-as-good at different times.

But, those darn K2s! I don't know much of the who/how of the K2 process. However, they always sound good to me (with no Van Gelder/McMaster discussion involved).

    I want the Monk/Mulligan. :tup

    Wesbed,

I agree with you 100% about the K2's. Every one I have ever purchased has sounded really good. Of course, often times the original OJC's didn't sound too bad either. Since I don't the Wes or the Mulligan, I am looking forward to these titles. I already have the Bill Evans but if I find a good deal I might have to splurge. B)

  4. Sheldonm,

This is beginning to feel like the Twilight Zone!

Anyone know of a place or perhaps be interetsed in selling a mint/clean/sealed  copy of Andrew Hill's Grass Roots on CD for $10 to $12? I'm just starting to get into the music of Andrew Hill and would appreciate any leads on this one. Thanks.

Anyone know of a place or perhaps be interetsed in selling a mint/clean/sealed copy of Andrew Hill's JUDGEMENT or SMOKESTACK on CD for $10 to $12? I've been into the music of Andrew Hill for a long time but just can't seem to find a mint/clean/sealed copy of these! I would appreciate any leads.:g:lol:

    Thanks.

( Stop Laughing :):) Hey I thought it was worth a try!)

Sent you a PM if this is for real!!

  6. I have to agree with Bev and Late on this one. This is probably my favorite Shorter CD. I recently purchased the RVG just to see if there was any way to improve on this classic.( Sound may be slightly improved but not really a significant improvement IMHO) I also agree with Sangry. To my ears this one has an almost mystic quality to it. I can't add a lot to what has already been said, but if you are counting votes count me in on the side that can't get enough of this one! :g:g

  7. Same thing happened to me. I ordered Traditionalism Revisited also, even made use of the free July shipping that someone on this board alerted me to. Well needless to say I did not get it. I emailed them and have correspondence going back and forth. Telephoned and spoke to the President. I didn't even get the $5 credit. Wouldn't have mattered. Won''t order from there again anyway.

This is very interesting that this many people have experienced this type of service!!!

    March

Newk's Time / Sonny Rollins crappy remastering on old version

Prayer Meeting / Jimmy Smith * crappy remastering old version

    etc. etc. etc.

    Gee Dr J,

With such a lofty opinion of all the previous versions it is amazing that any of us bought them in the first place! :g:g:g On balance I think this is a pretty good list. I am really looking forward to Ready for Freddie and Sweet Honey Bee.

  9. Dave,

In all fairness to the folks that charge for this service, I have a friend that does this and there is a great deal of value added in his case. In addition, he has purchased some pretty expensive software to really do the job right. He takes out the clicks and pops and the result is a disc that sounds better than the original source material.

It sounds like the person you spoke to must do similar things since the quality of the source material was important in setting the price. It can be very time consuming if done right.

Guess it depends on what you are looking for.

  10. Catesta,

I spotted a copy of this a few days ago in a used shop I go to. The Wahoo- Blue Note copy was in great condition as I recall. Would you like for me to pick it up for you if it is still there?

This is a great session by the way.

I have been looking for some stuff for a long time myself.....so I know how it is.:wacko:

    Send me a pm

  11. Rooster,

What do you think of "But Not Farewell"? I have listened to it a little and my first impression is that it is better than Eternal Spirit but certainly not equal to Hill's best work. What do you think?

  12. OK, I am listening to this one again, about the 6th time and I admit that I really don't get this one. What am I missing?I generally like Andrew Hill but this one hasn't hit me yet. I even like some of his later work. I think Dusk is very good for instance. For some reason this one is different for me.

I know there are some huge Andrew Hill fans here and I hope they can point out the highlights of this one for me. AMG gives it 4.5 stars so I will plead guilty right up front.(not that I always agree with their ratings)

    Seeking your opinions................

    Thanks

  13. Sundog,

Do not be afraid of All Seeing Eye or Soothsayer either, although I have never been overly impressed with the recording quality of Soothsayer. I think they will RVG that one soon IMO, but probably not soon enough. Both are really great. It took me a long time to get into All Seeing Eye but if you get into Footprints you will probably enjoy it now after several close listenings. It is still not my favorite Wayne but it has moved up the list. Don't forget Et Cetera and Schizophrenia. Both are worth looking for.

Shorter is fantastic. Glad you are enjoying his work. We will just add you to the Shorter stack. You will find a lot of company here! :D:D:D

  14. IMHO Footprints Live is an unbelievable piece of work. To me it is Wayne's biography of a sort. The way he weaves his past into his present with a vision of where his future lies is mesmerizing. I think you really need to listen to his early stuff a lot to really appreciate what he accomplishes on Footprints. It is an amazing effort. He is all there for all to see. His past, his present, his future all incorporated into a single effort and still in a new and fresh way. Wayne is a genius on this one and I do not use that term lightly. Footprints is almost like a lecture with emotion. It is instructional, yet not too intellectual. Great, great work, again IMO.

Alegria is very good as well but it doesn't accomplish what Footprints does for me.

  15. Here is the information you were looking for from Kevin's post. What happened to Kevin? Somehow I seemed to have missed all of that. If he is no longer posting here I think it is unfortunate. I looked forward to his contributions and hope that he will continue to visit this board.

Just got an E-mail from Michael listing the Febraury/March RVGs. He doesn't know how they will be broken up just yet but as usual, there will be 6 in one batch and 6 in the other.

I just figured we might save some money with the upcoming Japanese releases.

    Here goes:

    Newk's Time / Sonny Rollins

Sweet Honey Bee / Duke Pearson

Ready For Freddie / Freddie Hubbard

Never Let Me Go / Stanley Turrentine

The Cape Verdean Blues - Horace Silver

At The Half Note Cafe Vol.1& 2 / Donald Byrd

    Conquistador - Cecil Taylor

Rockin' The Boat / Jimmy Smith

    Free Form / Donald Byrd

    Goin' West / Grant Green

    Right Now / Jackie McLean

    Breaking Point / Freddie Hubbard

  16. I would have said Soultrane, but after reading the postings here I went back and revisited Lush Life ( thanks Jazzmouse). After several days of being in pretty steady rotation, I have decided that I share the enthusiasm of this board for that one. I do not know why it did not strike me the first time I heard it but what the heck. It is serious piece of work.

Those two would be my choices.

    Soultrane

    Lush Life
