  1. I would say early Golson has a Lucky Thompson connection. Later Golson shows more of a "fuzzy" connection to Coltrane.
  2. These two are perhaps my favorite examples of Benny Golson's playing.
  3. No Dan, I have a strong positive opinion about Hank Mobley. In my personal "rating system", Mobley is on the high end of the tenor saxophone list. Walter Bishop Jr. is far lower down on my "theoretical" list of jazz piano players.
  4. I have not been much of a fan of Walter Bishop Jr.'s recordings. There are many other pianists I prefer from the period in which Bish was on the scene. As a sideman I am always wishing for a different piano player than Walter Bishop Jr. However, he sounded very good when I saw him in a club in New York back a number of decades ago. He was in a wonderful group with Bill Hardman, Junior Cook, Paul Brown and Leroy Williams. The music that evening was memorable.
  5. Along with the previously mentioned album on Denon, the 4 below are some favorite of Randy Brecker's playing.
  6. I am not partial to some of Jimmy's later albums. My favorites are his six Riverside dates and Picture of Heath with Barry Harris.
  7. String Quartets - D.36, D.74, D.87
  8. Op.70/2O Op.97 "Archduke" WoO 38
  9. The fine Canadian trumpet and flugelhorn player died this morning. I am glad to have had the opportunity to hear his playing live a number of times times.
