  5. Listened yesterday to the Verve date "Four" with the Wynton Kelly trio. It was a decent session (in my opinion), but not anything special. The tune "On The Trail" was my favorite. The sound quality was below average. The bass & drums were not at all clear. There was a muddy quality to the sound. This is not unusual for a number of recordings from that Baltimore venue. I strongly suspect it was not recorded with the intent to release it on a commercial label.
  6. What you said is the very reason that I prefer his Riverside recordings to the one on Capitol. Being a PERSONALITY is nice, but for me the music is the key. Also, as a hardcore jazz fan, I am more focused on the music for jazz listeners. Music for a "variety of peoples", is fine but not of high priority to me.
  7. Beethoven - Op.31/1 and Schubert - D.780 "Moments musicaux"
  8. In my view, Cannonball was a fine jazz musician, but not at the level of players such as Rollins or Coltrane. My favorite period of his recordings starts from the mid-fifties to about 1963. His sextet sessions with Yusef Lateef are my favorites. After that Cannonball continued make a number of very good recordings, but not as interesting (to me) as that sextet with Yusef Lateef.
  9. Rene Thomas - Meeting Mister Thomas
  10. Mozart - Serenades K.239 "Serenata notturna" & K.525 "Eine kleine Nachtmusik" and Dvorak - String Quartet Op.96, "American"
  11. A number of fine solos from many of the players in the group. I was especially impressed by the hard swinging of pianist Lou Levy.
  12. Haydn - String Quartet Op.76/3 "Emperor" and Mozart - Piano Concerto No.26, K.537 "Coronation"
  13. Schubert - Octet D.803 - Wiener Oktett
