  1. Was listening this AM to the Prestige CD "Modern Jazz Quartet / Milt Jackson Quintet". For those unfamiliar with this album, Horace Silver is the piano player on the quintet tracks. Buhaina, a Silver composition is on this session. I find it an appealing tune, and wonder why Horace never recorded it on any of his Quintet dates? It does appear on his trio album. Lord shows it listed on a few very very obscure sessions by others, but that's it. Though I understand that there is no simple answer, I am often surprised that certain original jazz tunes, seem to be ignored by other musicians, while others get played and recorded frequently. It might be interesting to hear from some here with jazz tunes they liked, yet have been left in the cupboard after being recorded just once or twice.

  7. Haven't started the book yet, but plan to do so. Gene had a regular gig for a few years in Niagara-On-The-Lake, Ontario. That is where the Shaw Theatre Festival is held every summer. When we lived in Rochester, NY we would go every year for a few days. Had a chance to see/hear Gene play at a club there a few times. We hung out together and Gene invited us one evening to a home of a friend where we talked for quite some time. Have fond memories of that experience, though I don't recall the topics we discussed.

  12. I saw Armstrong, Eldridge, Lester Young, Ellington, Basie, Hodges, Miles, Coltrane, Diz, Chet, Dorham, Clifford Brown, Bud Powell, and many many other jazz legends. Had a great opportunity to see Charlie Parker, but passed thinking I would see him next time he was in Detroit. Unfortunately there was no next time. My greatest jazz regrett was missing that chance to see Bird.
