  8. Though I tend to prefer Mingus´ smaller ensembles work, and though this recording is sort of "greatest hits revisited" (only one real new composition, "Celia"), this band sounds with total perfection and arrangements and new vissions of earlier Mingus´ themes are superb!!! I like Mingus´ bass sound, which you can hear in the front-line like never before! It´s in my top-ten Mingus recordings (don´t know now if in my top-five) This album of the week thread is a very good idea!

My favourite recordings as a leader: -The eminent, vol.1 and 2 (Blue Note) -Pinnacles (Milestone/OJC) -all his dates with Kai Winding -At the Opera House (with Stan Getz) (Verve) Outstanding discs as a sideman coming to my mind now: -Birth of the cool & Blue note vol1&2 (Miles Davis) -Hawk flies high (Coleman Hawkins) -Alfie (Sonny Rollins) -The Cape Verdean blues (Horace Silver) ...
  13. Must recognize I haven´t heard some of those pearls: I promise I won´t "procrastinate" picking them... so I vote for "Procrastinator"
  14. Wonderful recording! From his work with Dolphy, I´d add the two Prestige volumes "At the Five Spot" (1961) and "Memorial album" (1961). He was included in Coltrane´s Africa/Brass sessions too!
  15. For an intricate ride on CT´s music, try "It´s in the brewing luminous" (Hatology, 1980). It will take more than one listening...

  18. Great playing in those concerts! Town Hall is a great one! Another "curious" and IMO good CD is Carmen McRae´s "Carmen sings Monk" (Bluebird, 1988). Jordan playing both tenor and soprano. Also featured Charlie Rouse. Most of the lyrics added to Monk tunes were composed by Jon Hendricks

    Bobby Jaspar

I enjoyed his playing in some Chet Baker sides! And the Bobby Jaspar JIP I have (Modern Jazz au Club St Germain) sounds great, too.
  20. Another name for you....if you are open-minded: Chano Domínguez Monkish spanish flamenco-jazz and more Believe me: great stuff!!
  21. It´s not a battle of tenor saxes, but well, it´s HAWK and Lockjaw Davis together: Nighthawk (Prestige, 1960)
  22. Brownian Motion: You can find "Accent on tenor sax" at planetmusic.es with a very good price (9€) Well, sometimes they don´t update their catalogue on-line. You order, say, 15 items, and you receive 5, without any explanation by e-mail!!!
