That is the deal -- they play a song that was popular the summer that you were 16 and partying, you get that warm feeling of nostalgia, and the company's logo appears. Repeat until logo = warm feeling. Mission accomplished. Devious and outright mechanical, but effective. I agree, but I also don't think that's a new development, been going on for a long time. Some of us have just reached the point in the process where we're the ones that now recognize the oldies that are being played in the commercials as "our" music. True. Wasn't it Levi's that started it? And made hits out of Muddy Waters &etc. MG -

Actually all of Bryant's Cadets have been out on Japanese CDs, except Take A Bryant Step. (At least I'm not aware of a CD release of that one.) Excellent stuff! In addition, Bryant's first Cadet session remains unissued and there are quite a few unissued tracks from the other sessions, so in this case a Mosaic set would make more sense. But I don't think Cuscuna is a big fan of this type of music, so a Mosaic set may not be very likely. I agree on the likelihood of a Mosiac set of this, though I'd buy it like a shot; the only one of the Cadets I have is "Gotta travel on". I used to have an original of "Slow freight", but sold it when I was on the dole in '69. MG -
"Catch a Fire" and "Burnin" "Natty Dread" is nice too. (and the double live Lp "Babylon By Bus": it has his moments, plus the most famous Marley's songs, IMHO,) If you buy used vinyl doublecheck the condition: those rastafanatics used to be very stoned when they played records. German and Dutch pressings are good as usual. Avoid the latest reissues, digitally remastered with the very same boom-fest of the cd. And look for some lost weed inside the cover... What I'd suggest if you don't mind to buy digital and if you're really interested in early Marley's works is this box set: http://www.amazon.com/gp/search?index=blen...;_encoding=UTF8 The true original Marley and the Wailers before he became a Rockstar. Trenchtown taste 100%. All this Upsetters sets are generally interesting, Lee Perry was the Goodfather of the Raggae, though I fully listened to the Marley's box only. P.S. If you find an original "Catch A Fire" with original "Zippo" cover, at a decent price and in good condition, I would be interested too. Thanks Porcy. I have a few Scratch albums. I think the cheapo comp I have is mostly early stuff. But I'll look at the local second handers first. MG

Following up Brownie's hint, I just had a look at Ray Bryant on Lonehill. There are 3 CDs by the Charlie Shavers/Ray Bryant Quartet - actually, LPs I've never heard of made for MGM & Everest under Shavers' name, but Shavers/Bryant can't be bad, can it? (Well, MGM?) There is one by the Ray Bryant Trio called "Complete recordings", which is "Live at Basin Street East" and "Cold Turkey" - two very nice (but no better, I think - they're not nearly as good as "SOUL") albums that came out on Sue, and which have been reissued on Collectables. And, most interesting, is one called "The complete Little Suzie recordings", which turns out to be an LP called "Ray Bryant plays" + the original hit version of "Little Suzie" parts 2 & 4 (there never was a parts 1 & 3 single - what a wonderful world). All this stufff originally appeared on Bob Thiele's Signature label. I think I'll get that "Little Suzie" CD. Anyone know anything about the Charlie Shavers material? MG -

A Cadet set would be nice too; not much of that stuff out and about on CD. MG PS - I think maybe quite a few of the Columbias are out on Collectables. I have "Madison time"/"Holywood jazz beat" on a Collectables twofer. I think there may be others. -

Marley is someone I haven't got round to yet. I've only got a cheapo CD compilation. Seeing what Porcy says, I note that my local second hand shop has some orig LPs. So what about some hints on which to buy first, folks? MG

Bryant, with Tate & etc, also made an album called "Dancing the big twist" for Columbia, about a year later. Both are good albums. SERIOUSLY underrated, I think. MG -

I really think you're wrong there. That music was hyped as being not commercial in the sixties by the Clive Davises and Ahmet Erteguns of the world but what was happening was that, for the first time, hit albums were routinely outselling hit singles, basically because your generation had loadsamoney. Because of a slight historical disconnect (partly because so many of the big selling albums of the fifties and early sixties were jazz or jazz-related like Sinatra's), it was possible to persuade people (including the members of the new bands) that only singles were commercial. So a whole generation of kids believed that these bands were, in some way, anti-commercial, anti-establishment. But that had nothing to do with reality, which was that the moguls were making huge bucks out of supposedly non-commercial music. MG -

A friend of mine, who used to play trumpet in symphony orchestras, had one of those in the early sixties, when he lived in London. When classical music gigs were thin on the ground, he did theatrical gigs and managed at this period to work three gigs a night in different theatres, using the Isetta to slide in between the traffic to get from one gig to the other. The middle gig of each evening required him to be on stage and blow a fanfare, dressed in Roman soldier's uniform. He'd whip out of that gig and into his Isetta - still dressed as a Roman! - and on to the next. Once he couldn't get there in time to change out of the uniform into mufti, so appeared in the orchestra pit still dressed as a Roman. That was the end of his three gigs a night work! MG
