  1. Found that Ibrahim/Ward duo album, Live at (somewhere) Vol. 1 (Ekapa 004) - there was never a Vol. 2 as is announced on the back, or was there? Great album, to be sure!

Also found some cheap and clean ECM Vinyl (Metheny's "New Chautauqua", Bengt Berger's "Bitter Funeral", Gary Burton's "Dreams So Real", and Kenny Wheeler's "around 6")

  2. found some goodies in the used CD store yesterday...

James Newton - African Flower (Blue Note)

Ray Bryant - All Mine... And Yours (EmArcy Japan)

    Kenny Burrell - Soulero (GRP)

and also the OST of "Round Midnight" (not sure how rare it is, only had the Dexter Blue Note disc so far)

  3. Mingus Ah Um

    Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus

    The Great Paris Concert

Ah Um because it was the first Mingus album I loved from start to finish on its first listening, the Candid because it had the perfect quartet combination with Dolphy, and the Paris concert for its incredible music and for several personal reasons (I was lucky to be there!).

That's a fine choice, and mine as well... or mine would have "Black Saint" instead of the "Great Paris Concert", but I can't quite decide... three Mingus recordings are about 10% of how many I badly need! :excited:

  4. Good to see new Selects being prepared even if I shall skip that Lucky Thompson. Already have several vinyl and CD versions of its content including an original copy of the Polydor session with Sammy Price (one of the very last vinyl I purchased a couple of months ago!).

That's the same that was in the Jazz in Paris series, I assume? Not a bad session, mind me, but I think still a bit of an odd choice to go along the fine US sessions in this upcoming Select.

  5. Thanks for that great post, MG!

My Gaton collection is still very thin, but the Fantasy compilation disc "At Large" has some of those oddball tunes, and indeed they're fun!

Other than that one, I only have "Soul Night Live!" (twofer CD), After Hours (twofer CD of "Lose..." and "Soul Grabber"), and then two of the Mues: "Bar Wars" and the pairing with Vonski, "Lockin' Horns" (both on 32 Jazz CDs in those lovely plastic packages and with amazing cover art... )

  6. Or he is on substances we cannot even begin to imagine ... :D :D :D

Time to cool down, really. Is there a doctor in the house who can issue a prescription for a few sedatives? ;) ;)

I know of an excellent doctor for young Aric...my good friend Achtung Dr. Freud Calling!!! His methods are, shall we say, idiosyncratic, but highly effective!!!

  7. Saw them a couple of weeks ago - quite a lack of variation, dynamics and space to breathe... but hell I liked it! They seem to go for broke all the time, and the music isn't just virtuosic, much of it actually did have something going in there. Drummer Dan Weiss was amazing, playing tabla and half a kit built around the tabla drums, switching to and fro... certainly the finest pale-faced tabla player I've yet witnessed!

  8. Flurin: Get these two:

Those two are on their way now! :)

You did good Flurin, you're going to like these.

I'm not totally conviced by these yet... they are wonderfully musical, no denying that, but somehow they seem a bit tame and lacking edge. As of now, I still prefer the earlier albums.

  9. There's a cheapo Sony version that came out a few months ago, I'm sure it was discussed here.

It's perfectly legit, and I think it even has a small booklet with the discographical info (but don't nail me for this, I have the big box!). It's a "wallet box" or how they call these, cardboard box the size of a regular CD, more or less, with the discs packed in cardboard (or paper) sleeves. Nothing fancy, just a great way to sell the music cheaper to those who wouldn't go for the expensive big box!

However, there are several Spanish and Italian versions around (Comet is one, from Italy, not sure which of the Lonehills/Jazz Factories etc has released it in Spain).

  10. Not right now... I bought so much lately, Neil Young is just one of the bunch (others include The Band, Joni Mitchell, Talking Head, Velvet Underground, Patti Smith, Kevin Ayers, Emmylou Harris, Devendra Banhart, Cat Power... in no particular order). But I'll keep my eyes open in case I stumble over any other of the live Archives discs for a good price!

  11. I listened to some young back in high school, but only in the last few months I've been getting deeper into his music, having bought most of his early albums by now. The sort of decisive moment was me seeing "The Last Waltz", after which I went out and re-familiarised myself with some of the guests (and getting on a major Band trip, first!). I don't yet have Young's debut album, but "Everybody Thinks...", "On the Beach", "After the Goldrush", "Harvest", "Tonight's the Night", "Zuma"... what an great run of albums! I also dig "American Stars'n'Bars" a lot!

How many volumes are there so far in the live archive series? I only have the Fillmore disc with Danny Whitten - another great one... what others are there and how are they?
