  1. It wouldn't surprise me if we all were fooled. BTW, I forgot to mention that I had not yet become a citizen when I was interviewed for Great Moments for Young Americans
  2. My e-mail setup was messed up when I switched to Panther (my fault), hence my delay in explaining what this disc is about. When I was general manager of WBAI (Pacifica's NYC station), I received a call from a production company. Radio month was coming up, they reminded me, so they were preparing to record a series of short interviews for nationwide public service distribution--would I agree to be interviewed. I did and they sent a crew to the station. The man who conducted the interview told me to call him Hugh, which I thought odd, because he had introduced himself using a different name. They came, interviewed, and went away. I had forgotten about it until some time later when my secretary put a disc on my desk. I could not believe what I saw--much less what I heard. There had been no mention of the U.S. Army; if there had, I would not have agreed to the interview--you see, WBAI is a pacifist station, and here was its manager participating in a recruitment ad! There was not a hint of thiss in the actual interview and, of course, they had dubbed in the voice of Hugh Downs in place of the other guy (no wonder they taped so much room noise, "atmosphere"), so this was deceptive all around. I wrote these people a letter of protest and I talked about this scam on the air--listeners were outraged, and rightly so. BTW I am very pleased and impressed with the new "Panther" OS.
  3. There was an Amway couple in my building--they had that cult look in their eyes whenever they spoke of Amway, which they almost always did. And [everything was just wonderful! Terrible tragedies somehow became happy events--it was so sick. They also are extremely pushy and their merchandise is over-priced (they'll tell you it heavily concentrated). Pushy, because the carrot is a trip to Amway's dream island, or some such thing, and a promotion to grand exalted what-have-you (or something like that). I finally had to ask them to stop ringing my doorbell. I think Shaklee is a similar gimmick.
  4. You should see their bar stools!
  5. Rightfully rare...
  6. Happy to leave Verve, Anita O'Day gave me an autographed album on her own Emily label..
  7. Beautiful! Thanks for posting the link. Reminds me of a British series PBS once rean. A young couple traveled the world and visited a different city each week. They were having coffee in a Portland café--their waitress, a drag queen, introduced herself thus: "Hi, I'm your waitress, Helvetica Bold."
  8. And here's A Christmas card I received from Lovie Austin in 1961
  9. This little card was pinned to a bouquet of roses that Alberta Hunter received in 1929, when Show Boat (in which she starred with Paul Robeson) closed in London. It was a token of appreciation from the show's black chorus girls. If you look carefully, you will see Mabel Mercer's signature at the bottom.
  10. Looks like it to me--a dilution, for sure.
  11. Yes
  12. Perhaps it's an optical illusion to go with the aural illusion contained within.
  13. I gave it a listen and I'll tell you what's wrong with this picture, it's an insult to Blue Note's illustrious past (but, of course, not the first one). A very uneventful (i.e., boring) release, IMO. If it is any indication of the new, Norah Jones-ed BN direction, I think there will be a lot of disappointed old devotees out there--and, I'm sure, some new ones with less demanding ears. At best, some of the blues/r&b tracks are ok--that is to say, pleasant enough, but this is, basically, shallow commercial faux music.
  14. I don't ever ask for them, but I have a few...
  15. It is said that your appreciation and embrace of the music of Armstrong and Ellington came late. If that is so, do you think you might also experience an epiphany in regard to jazz as it has developed over the past fifty years?
  16. Weizy, I have had the same problem with speed discrepancies. Solved it by switching to Roxio Toast (I believe they also have software that runs on your platform--no, not Republican!), Toast reads the blank and lets you know the safe speed range. Toast also lets you go through a test run, which would have saved you some blanks. Of course, I have also come across bad blanks, but very rarely do I encounter one--even among the budget variety. BTW Neither Paul Horn nor Roy Haynes has ever resisted burning on my Mac--Gladys Swarthout is another matter.
  17. I've had it for a few days--guess I'll listen to it this week.
  18. If you have seen any of his interviews, you know that very little he says has any credibility. Q&A might be interesting, however--if the questions are aren't of the usual jaz mag variety.
  19. Time-Warner's Road Runner was almost spam-fre until recently, but now these obnoxios pieces of junk pop in all day long. I don't read them, I just delete, but the scumthat bombards us with this crap ought to be locked up and made to eat nothing but Spam.
  20. Sounds good to me, Brad!
  21. Great view, couw. Here's a winter shot from my living room. You can see the Citicorps, Chrysler, and Empire State buildings.
  22. I woke up to this view from my bedroom window, so I thought I'd share. What is the first thing you see? (Perhaps I shouldn't ask!)
  23. Yes, sheets of these stamps were printed as a promotion, complete with a glue backing... There was at least one instance of someone using it successfully.
  24. That is the answer--the control key and mouse button simultaneously.
  25. It's been several years since I did--we nod to each other, but I'm not sure if he remembers me. When he and Abbey were together, she and I frequently talked--albeit usually briefly--at the supermarket. BTW, (and apropos drummers in the hood) Sonny Greer used to live across the street from that supermarket, and we had known each other for years. Quite a number of jazz artists live in my neighborhood.
