  1. Allen, you have again broadened my horizon. Of course, I knew some of this, but I had no idea that the sokai approach to embroiderycame from the Gabrovo area! What an extraordinary coincidence that is when one thinks of the long and sometimes sordid history of the two-faced stitch. How drab life would be without such unexpected revelations! Can we expect "That Devilin' Stitch" any time soon?
  2. Similarly, staff rosters list employees and biographies are personal histories. The original post might be useful on a forum dedicated to pre-WWII Bulgarian embroidery, but here it just does not enlighten. That said, here's welcoming you to Organissimo's forum, Julie.
  3. An interesting, eclectic list, Jon. I second the Jelly Roll suggestion and recommend Wynton Kelly's Smokin at the Half Note (unless that material is included on one of the albums you already have). Since you like both comedy and jazz, I also highly recommend Ken Nordine's "Word Jazz"... or did I miss that on your list? Forgot to mention that I think your art work is superb, but I think I noted that a long time ago.
  4. Great news, Joel, congratulations! Give my best to Wendy Oxenhorn.

  16. It would appear that they laid one.
  17. MG, Douglas was far from obscure in the U.S., he had a daily network TV show that was very popular. As for Thiele's museum, my memory is vague on this, but it was a museum (devoted to rock and located outside of New York) that bore his name. It either failed or never got off the dream list. I see no mention of it in the various online Thiele bios, but, then again, his magazine, Jazz and Pop, also seems to be ignored.
  18. Charles Earland (Mercury) Eric Dolphy (Tom Van Wageningen) Jimmy Smith (Jimmy Katz) The Mahavishnu Orchestra: Jerry Goodman, John McLaughlin, Billy Cobham, Rick Laird, and Jan Hammer (Sony Music) Mike Douglas poses with The Dixie Hummingbirds* (Photographer unidentified) *Surely, he could have afforded a less obvious headpiece.
  19. I'll start this day with an odd batch of glossies. MG wanted to see some of the producers, so we have Carl Jefferson, who loved jazz, and Bob Thiele, who also loved the music, but adored himself. Then there's one for Conrad, who loved Berigan. On to an interesting photo of a New York singer who draws more praise than customers, the son of a famous music publisher, and a colorful, enjoyable flash in the pan. Carl Jefferson, he founded a jazz festival and label (Concord Jazz) Bob Thiele, he founded many labels and built a museum for himself (Red Baron) Bunny Berigan (Bluebird) Catherine Dupuis (Martha Camarillo) Wyer Handy poses with staffers at a Stereo Review party (David Gould) August Darnell - aka "Kid Creole" (Hans Nelem)

  21. They took the concept and ran with it, soon inspiring Bill Gates to emulate Apple with his Windows. I don't think any version of Windows can hold a candle to the concurrent Mac OS. My current Mac is a 24" iMac.... I am delighted to report that Jimmy Heath has just bought the same machine. Bassist Ben Brown, who will help Jimmy set it up, now owns my old machine, a G4 that served me well, but he will also soon move on up.
  22. Terence Blanchard (Hans Neleman) Dave Liebman (Columbia) Spyro Gyra: Julio Fernandez, Joel Rosenblatt, Jay Beckenstein, Tom Schuman, Scott Ambush (GRP) John Coltrane (Chuck Stewart) Bill Withers (Todd Grey) Barry White (EPA)

  24. And here I thought it was "Same Old Louie Blues"
  25. I just came back home from a trip to my nearest Circuit City (Broadway and 80th, NYC). Not too many customers there and it looked less ravaged than I had expected. Yes, they were sold out on some digital cameras, but there were plenty of flat screens, DVD players, lap computers, etc. 20% off that store's prices is no big deal when one can order the same merchandise online, no tax and free shipping. Only good price I found was on ink cartridges for my new Kodak printer, but even there the saving was nothing to write home about. Sorry to see them go, however.
