  1. ...and Pena...and Longoria...
  2. I had the chance to hear/see/photograph a show in LA this past weekend featuring three of the greatest living master congueros....Candido, Armando Peraza and Francisco Aguabella...along with Jack Costanzo. What a blast...sat through a panel discussion with all of them as well and managed to get them to pose together afterwards. Here are a few shots of Candido. Will post some others later if any interest. Mark~
  3. ...didn't know that...interesting!
  4. I still see Jazz Seen around though don't know if it's officially in or out of print. Jazz Life is amazing and huge....and a little spendy but worth it! m
  5. Very few mentions about his work with jazz musicians but I'm not surprised....Rebecca De Mornay...WTF??? Also, Herman Leonard will be awarded the Lucie Award in NYC this week..as Claxton did a few year ago. While there were/are many wonderful photographers out there......Claxton, along with Leonard and Bill Gottlieb were the masters...along with Francis. Mark~
  6. ...got off the plane from LA a few hours ago and gas was $2.66 at a station adjacent to the airport in Indy. BTW...gas was $3.45 in LA this weekend.
  7. I just returned from LA in the past hour as I was out there to shoot the LA Jazz Institute Big Band event in Newport Beach. I stopped by Herman Leonard's office on Friday afternoon when I got to LA and they told me Bill was very sick and would most likely not make it. I was back at my hotel room after the show last night and heard the news. Very sad; he was (along with Herman) was a hugh inspiration to me....! Another photographer friend of mind knew Bill for many years and said he hasn't really be well for a few years. Mark~

  20. Ah yes, the Hyde Park Jazz Festival Saturday. It was great, perfect weather, lots of nice venues and many excellent acts. It was one of the best sets I've ever seen by Henry Johnson's Organ Express (they started with Stanley Turrentine/Jimmy Smith's "A Subtle One" and hearing Chris Foreman on a B-3 with two Leslies is always a treat), Chicago Jazz Orchestra (with Dan Trudell on piano) was a treat, John Wright was enjoyable if not especially adventurous as usual and the Greatest Guitars set with Henry Johnson, Buddy Fambro and Curtis Johnson was fantastic. According to today's paper, there were 15K people there. My only caveat would be that with the growing crowds, it's not too tough to wander during the afternoon, but it's best to stake out a venue in the late afternoon/early evening and just stay there; the lines get too long to try to jump around. (Getting into the Checkerboard at 8 PM for the last two sets there was hopeless and when we came out of International House before the jam (it was after midnight and I admit it, aging is a b*tch, especially after over ten hours of festivities) it didn't look like there was any way everyone lined up for the jam was going to squeeze in. This may be one of those events where success causes as many problems as it provides answers. But it's well worth looking out for next year. Henry Johnson's show was nice; got some great shots as well. I left with one tune to go as I wanted to get over to see Fred Anderson at the Hyde Park Art Center which I think was the furthest venue away from DuSable....nice as well; I love Fred!!! Also saw Corey Wilkes with Kahil El Zabar....fun as well. m
