  1. David had maybe one-two leader dates but had such a wonderful sound. Knew and played with Wes Montgomery, David Baker, Mel Rhyne, Jimmy Coe, Al Kiger, Joe Hunt and other Indy greats as well. Mark~
  2. The great tenor player David Young has passed away. David, while not that well known to many...recorded several times with George Russell on many of his greatest albums and was a regular on the Indy Jazz scene for too many years to count. David had lived here in Indy all his life and continued to play until the past 6 months of so. Always a joy to see him play and talk with him.....though he was a very modest guy by most accounts. He didn't really like the spotlight on him and would rarely speak about himself but truly a wonderful man and artist. Certainly will be missed by me and countless others. RIP m~
  3. I was hanging out with the guys in Deep Blue Organ Trio this afternoon (show tonight at the Jazz Kitchen) and Greg Rockingham told me Hank had passed away....what a DRAG !
  4. ...a real gentle soul. I had many opportunities to photograph David and spoke with him many times. Karen and David once gave me some pie ...probably around the time of his birthday or maybe new years eve.... I don't recall. They were always very kind to me. As ejp626 said, I met him at the Showcase a few weeks ago to see David and he was not playing. This is one of the last photographs I made of him. RIP m~
  5. A dozen years ago, when Yoshi's was, in the words of its co-owner and namesake Yoshie Akiba, "a hideaway jazz club" nestled among private homes in Oakland's leafy Rockridge neighborhood, few would have expected that the place would come to bear the weight of the jazz world on its shoulders. I'm not so sure about that line....
  6. Jeff did my website and is a great guy; miss him as well. I've traded emails with him from time to time. Mark~
  7. ...37 degrees here in Indy. Not bad for 6:15 pm in the dead of winter. Lots of freezing rain the past couple days and a little snow. m~
  8. He spoke of his label when I saw him this past August in Chicago. He had copied of his new cd with him at that time. m~
  9. MG - Do you know what the story is with Delmark 443 - Jimmy Coe: After Hours Joint? I've looked for it - love the 2 Coe tracks on Honkers & Bar Walkers Vol. 1 - but have never come across it. Did it go in and out of print very quickly? I don't know. I got my copy in '97, but it was only available on K7 at the time. I've subsequently seen that a CD version was available, but didn't get around to getting it. I seem to remember there were extra tracks). I downloaded the Delmark catalogue in 2003 and it wasn't listed. Delmark also distributed Jimmy Coe's recent (1994) big band album, "Say what?" which has a couple of live cuts from 1987 featuring Melvin Rhyne. I think that may still be available, 'cos I got mine in 2004. It isn't bad; mostly Indianapolis musicians; Coe playing alto except on the live trax. I think you can get the album off Coe's website (sorry, don't have the address any more). He's still playing (well, he was in 2004); a great survivor. MG PS - trivia point: Jimmy Mumford, drummer with Funk Inc, was Coe's drummer until he died, I assume, shortly before "Say What?" was recorded. Funk Inc was an Indianapolis band. Guitarist Steve Weakley was in this band as well...still plays frequently around Indy and still resides here. Jimmy Coe was a good guy and great player.....saw him dozens of times before he passed away. Mark~
  10. Happy New Year to all....hopefully a more peaceful one around the world as well! m~
  11. ...I watched a movie last night that I had recorded on vhs many years ago.....the lost weekend...great flick. My vcr sounded as though it was going to "lift off" as it was rewinding! m
  12. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28424855/ A mention of David in this article as well. m~
  13. Here is the Billboard report below, he had a heart attack Nov. 26 and never really recovered, I wonder how much of this is attributed to his many years of drug and alcohol abuse? Jazz Trumpeter Freddie Hubbard Dies Freddie Hubbard December 29, 2008 03:14 PM ET Jonathan Cohen, N.Y. Jazz trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, who played with legends such as John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, McCoy Tyner, Art Blakey and Herbie Hancock, died today (Dec. 29) in Sherman Oaks, Calif. Hubbard, who had suffered a heart attack on Nov. 26, was 70. Born in Indianapolis, the artist moved to New York in 1958 and quickly began playing and recording with Coleman, Coltrane and Eric Dolphy. In 1961, he released "Ready for Freddie," the first of many collaborations with saxophonist Wayne Shorter. Hubbard's "hard bop" stylings can be heard on some of the landmark free jazz albums of the 1960s, including Coleman's "Free Jazz" and Coltrane's "Ascension." In the 1970s, he recorded more commercial-leaning albums for CTI Records, and maintained an active presence in the studio and onstage throughout the 1980s. Hubbard was bestowed with the National Endowment for the Arts' Jazz Masters Award in 2006. According to a spokesperson, a New York memorial is being planned. ...who knows.
  14. ..and one other image of Freddie from June of this year.
  15. ...here are a couple photos from this summer in Indy. One is of him playing along side of Jimmy Sapulding and David Weiss....out of the photo are Curtis Fuller, George Cables and I believe Javon Jackson. The other is a photo of David, Freddie and a local jazz dj Chuck Workman doing an interview at the Jazz Kitchen tent after their set. Freddie was pretty funny and other than not haviing his old chops....seemed to be in good spirits and looked well. He told me a funny story about his brother, who is also a musician....which I cannot repeat! RIP
  16. .....sad news about a fellow hoosier. Got a call from a friend of mine that grew up him in Indy about the news.....very sad! RIP~
  17. Apology accepted, and the rest of you can cut the crap. I'm sitting here with Jane's two albums on my desk and can assure you there really is a Ted Efantis (and I believe he's of Greek ancestry, but not positive), and he's listed on Jane's second album: Embers Glow - Jane Fielding, with the Kenny Drew Quintet, recorded in February, 1956, at Capitol Recording Studios in Hollywood. Engineer (Allan Emig). The songs include: 1. Embers Glow 2. Our Waltz 3. Key Largo 4. Along With Me 5. In Love In Vain 6. 'Round about Midnight 7. Too Marvelous For Words 8. Make The Man Love Me 9. Right Boy For Me 10. All Dressed Up Tonight And No Place To go That group consisted of the following musicians: Kenny Drew (piano) Joe Maini (alto sax) Ted Efantis (tenor sax) Paul Chambers (bass, tracks #2,4,5,6, & 9) Leroy Vinnegar (bass tracks #1,3,7,8, & 10) Lawrence Marable (drums) Photographs (William Claxton) Produced and supervised by Herbert Kimmel Jane's first album, Jazz Trio for voice, piano and string bass, was recorded August 29, 1955, at Jazz West Records, Hollywood. (Some of this information has been damaged, but Herb Kimmel produced and supervised it and the same photographer did the cover photos: Bill Claxton. Songs are: How Long Has This Been Going On Long Ago And Far Away One Song This Heart Of Mine How Deep Is The Ocean I'll Remember April I Wish I Knew Something To Remember You By and two pretty ballads by Shorty Rogers: Stars Didn't Fall & A Summer Day Musicians are: Lou Levy (piano) Red Mitchell (bass) Jane Fielding (vocals) Ted Efantis was not on this album. He had a lovely singing voice, and the last song I heard him sing in a club was The Nearness Of You. When I first met Ted, he worked part-time for a dry-cleaning company and finding music gigs at night. He and Jane used to visit my (then) husband and I at our small pad and we'd sit for hours playing "Twenty Questions." This brings back sooooooooo many good memories. I still haven't phoned Ted, but I will. I've been busy (no excuse) with my writing, and I have no idea when would be a good time to phone. So there you have the correct album information. As for bootleg material, well some of the people who write the liner notes don't know how to spell worth a darn. I have no idea how that Teddy Edwards stuff got started. Maybe he played with that name at one time, I have no way of knowing. I just know Ted Efantis played on Embers Glow with Jane, but (if I'm not mistaken) on only one track. HAPPY NEW YEAR! ...as your website says "now is the time"~~~ Happy Holidays to you as well. Mark~
  18. ....received some new Adobe editing/workflow software which I can't wait to dig into...a little cash, socks, a sweater and a few other odds/ends. Spent a lot of time with the family and a few friends.....nice. Happy New Year to all! Mark~
  19. I probably see 100+ live shows a year....and have music playing in my car/home/office most of the time I'm around. I really love the live experience! Mark~
