glad you enjoyed it! another fairly recent purchase of mine was John Butcher & Toshimaru Nakamura's Cavern with Nightlife. This disc is mostly solo sax from Butcher, with one live duo track tacked on at the end. From DMGs newsletter: "The four pieces for solo sax were recorded in the Oya Stone Museum in Japan, formerly a huge mining space hollowed out by 70 years of quarrying. The space adds an immense resonance to John's breathtaking sax explorations. John often repeats a phrase over and over, slowly accentuating certain notes and twisting them into odd shapes, often circular breathing to keep the flow." I don't know about "immense" resonance, but the sound is very nice. This is my first exposure to Butcher on solo sax and it is very impressive. I'm still not sure how much I would recommend this disc to others who weren't already fans of Butcher's, that will take a few more listens, but, for my own enjoyment, I'm really very glad I got this disc.

another disc I bought during Chuck's Okka sale: Fred Anderson Trio - Live at the Velvet Lounge This is a fantastic disc! It is nice to hear Kowald with Fred and Hamid. Very highly recommended.

Weather permitting I'll try to make this show. I'm not so sure I can convince my wife to go with me, although she will be going to Fred Anderson / Hamid Drake / William Parker with me. I'll keep an eye open for that disc. I don't own any Sonny Simmons right now, although I just ordered Firebirds, with the artist formerly known as Prince Lasha.

I'm glad to hear this. I took a chance and grabbed this, too. I figured it would be hard to go wrong for $5. I'm looking forward to hearing this one now. I also bought the disc you highly recommended, but have not had time to listen to it yet. I will post my thoughts once I have some time to listen to them.

Triage - Twenty Minute Cliff Triage is: Dave Rempis - sax Jason Ajemian - bass Tim Daisy - drums I just received this one from Chuck Nessa, as part of his Okka sale. I listened to it while driving to the vets and back this morning. I'm guessing that it wasn't this disc that made one of our cats vomit copiously, as the music is fantastic! I'd heard a lot about Triage for a while and I'm very glad I finally got around to checking them out. I also bought their most recent disc, American Mythology, dn will give that one a listen later on tonight. Twenty Minute Cliff is very highly recommended by me. Cleaning up cat vomit is not.

I love a lot of the music that gets lumped under the umbrella term "World Music." Some of my current favorites are: Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, from Pakistan Hariprasad Chaurasia, from India Fela Kuti, from Nigeria Ali Farka Toure, from Mali Thomas Mapfumo, from Zimbabwe as well as Rabih Abou-Khalil who does, I believe a fantastic job melding "western" jazz with "eastern" oud. When I have a little more time I'll start posting my thoughts on specific albums that are among my favorites.

Fred Anderson, William Parker, and Hamid Drake will be performing at Johnson State College, in Johnson, VT, on Sunday, December 12, 2004. The event starts at 7 PM in the Dibden Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets are $8. For directions, etc send em a PM. I hope that anyone in the vicinty of northern VT is able to make the show! I don't believe Fred leaves Chicago too often, so I am really looking forward to this show.

speaking of Sonny Simmons (a few posts back), I just found out that he is coming to Vermont with the Cosmosamatics. This lineup features him with Michael Marcus, bassist Masa Kamaguchi and drummer Jay Rosen. I still have not decided if I will go to the show or not, but I am very tempted. Has anyone seen this lineup recently?

one of the discs I picked up at DMG was John Lindberg's A Tree Frog Tonality. with Wadada Leo Smith, Larry Ochs and Ed Thigpen. A big thumbs up for this one! This is a great disc. Highly recommended.

Milan, I'm listening to your BFT again and I have to say, this is as baffled as I have been by any BFT so far! I'm able to pick out a few musicians here and there but, other than that, I am pretty clueless. I'm really enjoying listening to this disc and will try to get my comments written in the next day or so.

Bringing this thread back up for some air. I finally had a chance to listen to Mindif. What a beautiful album! This might be my favorite Ibrahim disc so far.

I just received a copy of a show Susie Ibarra did with Evan Parker back in 2001. My review? Jaw-droppingly good. This is some of the best work I have heard from Ibarra and Parker is, to my ears, really working well with her, listening and responding, and not at all dominating the proceedings. If any of my Funny Rat friends would like a copy send me a PM. I also received a recording of Susie's trio with Craig Taborn and Jennifer Choi, recorded later the same year. I have not yet had time to listen to that disc. Let me know if you would like that one included as well.

I have to admit, I've never heard of this disc, or of Hal singer, until reading this post. Great idea for a thread! I'll certainly be taking notes.

I would recommend grabbing the live Antibes set and Mingus x5 first. After that , grab any of the Atlantic titles you don't have, followed by as much live 1964 material as you can track down. JSngry has the right idea for where to start with that.

I wouldn't characterize any of these as "noisy," per se. D.D. is correct about the ability of DKV to get a ferocious groove going. When these discs arrive start with DKV Trio - WELS / Chicago. That set is a monster and, to my ears, very accesible. I also ordered Vintage Duets and Nuclear Assembly Hall, as well as a few other Okkas I'd been meaning to buy for a while. Let us know what you think when you have a chance to listen to this order!
