John Tapscott replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
there is the unlikely, but completely plausible possibility, that another individual might have used bill's computer. i don't personally feel that to be the case here, but we should consider it. A plausible possiblilty? Sounds pretty far-fetched. Not one of us here knows all the details and I know you have to consider all the evidence in total, but to me, that sounds like the kind of last ditch argument that a defense lawyer would throw out hoping to raise just a bit of doubt in jurors' minds. -
The Complete Felsted Mainstream Collection
John Tapscott replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Just ordered from Worlds Records - man, this Board costs me a LOT of money! Don't know whether to feel or . -
Having babies and marrying multiple times is not at all unusual, especially when one considers Peterson's environment and the fact that we only recently have woken up to reality. I am currently compiling a list of jazz musicians who might possibly be straight. Please bear with me. Don't want to continue this much further, but I am trying to understand the terms here. Valerie above says that some of these musicians must be bi-sexual, which would seem to be accurate (assuming there's any merit to some of this, which I'm beginning to doubt quite frankly, and no, I'm not in denial). But Chris, stay with me here, you're saying that if someone is married to a member of the opposite sex for 50+ years (whether one marriage or several), dies married to a member of the opposite sex, fathers children, but also has relations with members of the same sex, that person's not bi-sexual; they're strictly gay??? This is a bridge too far for me.

Not judging, just saying... if Oscar Peterson was gay, he did a pretty good job on the other side of the fence - 4 wives, father to seven children (at least). First time I heard that one.

Which New Release is grabbing your ears?
John Tapscott replied to Chicago Expat's topic in New Releases
Recorded 18 months ago so it's not exactly new, but recently found its way into my collection. Two piano sessions don't always work that well to my ears, but this one does IMO. It's a remarkably good CD. -
Piano Trio Format No Longer Does It For Me
John Tapscott replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Sometimes I find I just have to stay away from some music for a while, even music I greatly love, and just listen to other music for a while, could be days, weeks, even months. But when I come back again it always sounds fresh and better than ever to my ears. I could never be one of those people who listens exclusively to one (or primarily one) artist. Though it would be cheaper!!! -
Hi Bill: Yes, I enjoy Basie and Nestico ("Freckle Face" from the Japan album is a favorite), though I can't say that Sammy's my favorite Basie composer/arranger. There are several Nestico items on the live CD's I cited.

Here are three Pablos I enjoy: The first one with arrangements by Bill Holman is, IMHO, the best Basie recording of the Pablo years. I don't know that any of them are real classics - the studio sessions needed more rehearsal time (according to band musicians), and the live sessions are occasionally weighed down by a couple of vocals or a strange chart or two, like "Left Hand Funk" on the Japan CD. But overall, they're quite enjoyable.

You're right, but with all the available music competing for my limited dollars, I am less likely to buy good music from someone so dismissive of his customer base. And I'm guessing you meant two-dimensional, e.g. flat, lacking depth. I don't know what one-dimensional means. What I meant was that there's more to Sunenblick than represented by this quote. I have done lots of foolish things, (worse than this) and hope I wouldn't be judged by others on the basis of those things alone. And I'm not sure he's dismissive of his whole customer base - one, yes, and publicly, and it doesn't look too good. But my limited interaction with him has been very positive.

That will be your loss. Much care has gone into previous releasesthey are exemplary. Agreed. It's a very fine label. I have a number of their releases, both historical and more recently recorded sessions. Some of the booklets are so thick that you fight to get them in and out of the jewel cases. Did I misunderstand, or did someone from the label insult one of its customers (Allen Lowe) because he posted a legitimate complaint about the product? No, you didn't misunderstand. What Sunenblick said to Allen was over the top and unnecessary. I'm not defending it. However, his releases are most often musically excellent and very historically significant (Gillespie/Parker at Town Hall, for one.) A couple of times when I ordered several CD's from Uptown at a time, Sunenblick surprised me by slipping in an extra CD unordered and unpaid for by me. That's how I got the excellent Chet Baker Boston 1954 CD, a real gem that I wouldn't have ordered on my own. People are complicated to say the least. No one is one dimensional. Eagerly awaiting my Christian/Gryce/Richards order.

ok, fellow Chuckies: Johnny Richards: Kiss Her Goodbye
John Tapscott replied to AllenLowe's topic in New Releases
Larry: Have you been moonlighting over at Dusty Groove? Nope. Bought "Wide Range" when it first came out, got it again in the Mosaic set. Another Richards album I really like, one where the humor is especially striking, is "Something Else" (Bethlehem). An obvious point of comparison is Pete Rugolo, and I'll take Richards over Rugolo by miles. IMO Rugolo can be insufferably cute and coy, his bombast is truly bombastico, and he also seems to me to often lack a basic interest/involvement in the music as music rather than as gesture. One may not have a taste for Richards, but he pays real attention to the details of what he's doing. FWIW, I enjoy a great deal of Richards' music. The Mosaic Select (sadly out of print) is a gem IMO. I think the bombastico factor, while certainly there, is less prominent in his own recordings than in his writing for Kenton, possibly because Richards' own brass sections typically had 4 or 5 less players than Kenton's. Plus I think Johnny's band sometimes swung harder in a more traditional big band way. -
Bouncin' With Bartok - The Incomplete Works of Richard Twardzik by Jack Chambers (Mercury Press) I've had this for a while, but now just getting into it on my summer vacation. Fascinating reading.

Happy Birthday, Lon! Sounds like it will be a good one.

what's your flavor ice cream?
John Tapscott replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Plain and simple butterscotch. This thread is making me hungry for a taste! -
All three are now up for purchase on the Uptown website. http://www.uptownrecords.net/home/ I've heard good things about the Richards CD, but I'm really looking forward to hearing the Gryce.

Gordon Jenkins' "This Is All I Ask" from Foster is on soprano on this track but Wess steals the show with a wonderful tenor solo. The whole album is .

The Gryce, Christian, and Richards CD's are not yet listed on the Uptown website. Strange, since that's the place they usually show up first. http://www.uptownrecords.net/home/

Sad to hear. Loved his writing and playing with the Basie NT band. "Blues in Hoss' Flat,", just one of many possible examples. Great chart. Also his work with Elvin Jones. RIP Frank Foster.

That's just about how I feel, too. Vincent's OK, but there are other alto players in the genre I am more drawn to. Jesse Davis comes to mind. Having said that, this one is quite nice, if it can be found. This one's OK, too.

I think you're on to something. "Night Train" is Ok, but the problem with it IMHO is that the tunes are too short. Just when the trio starts to really groove, it's time to wrap things up. And I've never been a big fan of "Hymn to Freedom" - too much tremolo for my taste. "Affinity" is the better and more appealing date, again IMHO. The trio stretches out more.

"Only" 88 F here right now. Predicted high 91, doubt we'll make it as it has become overcast. Of course, it still feels like nearly 100F. But maybe this heat wave is finally starting to break up. Supposed to be nearly 10 F cooler by Sunday.

Bootleg: Miles Davis Quintet Live in Europe 1967
John Tapscott replied to mjzee's topic in New Releases
That's good to read, but it's not a true review, more of a promo blurb.
