  1. If the Bills were any good and tickets weren't so outrageously priced more might attend. There is not as much of a natural connection between Buffalo and Toronto as people assume (at least not in sports - the Leafs and Sabres have long been bitter rivals with the Sabres usually having the upper hand). Actually the Blue Jays AAA club has moved to Buffalo from Las Vegas for 2013. IMO, Kent Austin is a very good hire for the Ti-Cats.
  2. Only a moment to answer and will add a few more later but # 1 for me is Philly Joe Jones "Look, Stop and Listen". I love that CD. Edited to add: Every Uptown release that I own is worthy but some of my favorites include Pepper Adams, the Chet Baker in Boston, the recently re-issued Frank Wess/Johnny Coles date, Dexter Gordon's recent Ballad CD, and the above mentioned Serge Chaloff. The Don Sickler CD is good too, though I haven't heard it in a while. Oh, and the Carl Fontana , as well.
  3. There's lot of people he would have punched in the face, including the great Jimmy Knepper (whose chops were wrecked for at least for a time by a blow from Mingus' fist). I've always been curious as to who the sideman was who carried a revolver on stage when he played with Mingus. BTW, Eric A. is a he**uva player IMHO.
  4. Oh boy, this is terrible news. On Thursday I ordered a new Lewis Nash CD on Cellar Live which has Jimmy on tenor. It will be very tough to listen to, knowing the pain Jimmy and his family are suffering. My thoughts and prayers are with the Greene family and all the other families who suffered loss in this terrible tragedy. I can't begin to imagine what it must be like.
  5. Thanks for the heads-up Ted. Just ordered one.
  6. Happy Birthday Jim, and welcome to the 57 crowd!!
  7. And again. Truly wonderful music despite the inconsistent sound quality. Not complaining, mind you. It's all good. Charles McPherson blows me away with his great playing.
  8. I think only players' salaries count. I don't know that Calvillo and Ray and Burris make that much. Maybe, but no more than that. I don't know whether or not it's still true, but it seems to me that at one time the CFL exempted one player's salary (usually the QB) from the cap. But I could be wrong on that. I actually liked what I saw of the Ti-Cats early in the year. I thought they might end up where the Argos did. But bad defense did them in.
  9. This is very surprising in a league that counts every $ very carefully (No NFL here!). It's reported that Cortez has 3 years left on his contract at $400K per. That's a lot to swallow for a CFL team. So there must have been major issues.
  10. I forgot about the excellent O'Higgins/Alexander disc, but could/should have included it, too.
  11. 5 more: Don't overlook the Quill - it fully lives up to its title. and a fine DVD thrown in for good measure
  12. Since there's really only one track here, I'll nominate the whole thing. This is very, very good music with enough swinging to please even the hardboppers.
  13. Bill: You really need to try this one:
  14. A long and great life in music. Thanks for the joy, Mr. Brubeck. R.I.P.
  15. Org members should appreciate the name - Mosaic Stadium
  16. Good to hear. My set has apparently reached the PO but those f**tards at Royal Mail are charging me £12 import duty of which £8 is a 'handling charge'. Sadly, as a result of this I'll probably look at ordering future sets from that Jazz Messengers place in Barcelona. They seem to have most of the Mosaics in stock and there's no BS on imports. Never thought I'd see the day that Royal Mail was as bad as Canada Post but that day has arrived ! Not quite as bad yet. My set has still not arrived.
  17. Stay calm. Mine hasn't arrived yet, either, and I'm much closer to Stamford than you are! (although I once had a Mosaic set arrive from Stamford via England, long story...)
  18. Yep, that's the one. He also has fine solos on a couple of the Hank Levy time signature charts, "Of Time and Space" and "Ambivalence." Park was a great player, considered by every Kenton fan I know, to have been the outstanding soloist in Kenton's bands of the 70's. Heart troubles at a young age took John off the road, off the scene, and ultimately off the planet at around age 45 (1979, I think). I have the LP "When Winter Comes." If you ever see a copy, grab it. Honestly, the Kenton rhythm section was better (a young Peter Erskine on drums), but Park sounds very good on it.
  19. Glad my team won, but Calgary played a bad game. Looked unprepared. Had no plan to deal with the crowd noise. This game, I'm afraid, was not a good advertisement for the CFL.
  20. Happy 80th, Don!! Have a great day.
