  1. For the past couple of weeks I have had to take public transportation rather than drive to work.  This takes me along a different route than I would normally travel.  The upshot is that my morning commute now includes a guaranteed bright moment as I get a brief, passing look at the rear of (the still closed) Cafe Stritch --

  2. The basic premise of this game is the same -- name three people -- but in this version:

The last name of the first person is the same as the first name of the second person, and

The last name of the second person is the same as the first name of the third person.

Here's an example:  Andy Dick Grayson Hall, in which the three people are Andy Dick (comedian/basket case), Dick Grayson (Boy Wonder) and Grayson Hall (over-actress).

Different spellings of the same name are permissible, for example:  Lynda Barry Gordy Howe, for Lynda Barry, Berry Gordy and Gordie Howe, would be acceptable.

You can use the name of any well-known person, real or fictional, or any person-related name.  For example:  Tom Sawyer Brown Bomber, for Tom Sawyer (public domain scamp), Sawyer Brown (country music group) and (The) Brown Bomber (Joe Louis' nom de slugging)

Every one understand the basic concept of the game?  If so, then I'll kick things off with the first official entry:

    Conrad Janis Ian Fleming

A recent purchase for me, this is one of the better Ben Bagley productions.  "Contemporary" in this case meant mainly Kander & Ebb and Schmidt & Jones, although Jerry Herman is represented by one track and the song "Here i Come " is credited to Sheldon Harnick with music by Will Irwin and Louis Bellson (!).  One of Katherine Hepburn's three vocals was excavated from the show New Faces of 1932 -- so, contemporary for her, I guess.  Ms. Hepburn's vocals are an acquired taste to be sure, but her appearance on one of his previous Cole Porter albums, Mr. Bagley writes, "accounted for over five times as many record sales as I normally have", so there's that at least.

One of the most pleasant surprises here is discovering how good a singer Alan Arkin was!  Too bad musicals were out of style when he was a movie star.  Go ahead and listen to this Kander & Ebb number without imagining some Bob Fosse style choreography, I dare you.

One of the bonus tracks added for the CD version of the original LP is a lovely Jones & Schmidt tune called "Earthly Paradise".  It's sort of the antithesis to their most famous tune, "Try To Remember".  I could not find the vocal version by Patricia Hoag featured on this album, but here is an excellent solo piano version of the tune by its composer, Harvery Schmidt --

Disc 3 of 4, which covers the period from 1950 to 1954.  I absolutely love Jo Stafford and take every opportunity to extol her virtues.  This disc certainly displays her versatility, featuring her renditions of everything from "Peace In The Valley", to standards such as "Blue Skies", to novelty tunes such as "Chow Willy".  There are a number of pleasant but forgettable, "also ran" tunes from those days gone by.  Ms. Stafford still handles them with her trademark grace and style.  Among the highlights of this disc:

Don't Get Around Much Anymore --   A nice reminder that as a big band singer, Ms. Stafford was simply one of the best.  Also serves as a pleasant contrast to her later recording of this song as Darlene Edwards.

That's The One For Me -- A duet with Frankie Laine, which sounds kind of like Capitol was trying out a modified Louis & Keely thing with them.  There sure seems to be a Keelyesque style to Ms. Stafford's approach to this song.

Our Love Is Here To Stay -- Forget about songs, they don't even write tempos like this anymore.  I like the gentle little flourish Paul Weston adds at the end.

I'm Always Chasing Rainbows -- Beautiful.  Very effective string arrangement by Mr. Weston.

  5. The teams returned to the field today for Event #2, Balancing.  In this event, each team attempts to get as many of its members as far down the runway as possible before falling off.  The further each marble goes, the more points scored.

My Crazy Cat's Eyes failed to heed the sage advice of Depeche Mode, for they failed to "get the balance right".  Jeez -- how could a team with "Cat's" right in the name manage to lose a balancing competition?!?   In doing so, they also lost ground in the overall team standings.  Sigh -- the fabled "curse of the host team" may be striking again!
