  1. Radio broadcasts from 10/30 and 11/04, 1937.
  2. Art Hodes would certainly be near the top of my list.
  3. This man should do an album of Elvis Costello covers. He's already got the appearance covered. I guess that's all that matters.
  4. It's late October and that means it was high time for a Vincent Price movie night. Recently I watched: Merely okay. Lots of padding in this film, but VP is good. Christopher Lee is kind of on automatic pilot in his performance -- but that's about all the effort this movie deserved. VP's one man Poe show. It's only 53 minutes long, so I'm guessing this was made for TV. "The Telltale Heart" is perhaps the best segment here. "The Sphinx" turns out to be a complete waste of time. VP gives marvelous, scenery chewing performances throughout. A classic in its own way, although it has its share of padding too. VP and Peter Lorre are excellent together. They could have become the horror movie version of Abbot & Costello.
  5. From this 5 disc Rhino Records boxed set -- I'm listening to Disc 4, which includes appearances by Les Baxter, Russ Garcia, Dick Hyman, Sun Ra and John Zorn.
  6. Disc 2 of 2. Sure, this disc has Big T and Pee Wee on hand, but one's tolerance for the vocal stylings of Red McKenzie will likely be a determining factor in the amount of enjoyment one might glean from the Dec. '44 session included here.
  7. Keeping things in a vibes vein, but going from Mr. Tjader to Mr. Richards --
  8. The "Special Guest" was trumpeter Randy Sandke, who also supplied all the arrangements on this 1997 CD.
  9. Congratulations Pim, and best wishes to your new & improved family! Perhaps not as a first listen for the lad, but at some point this disc could come in handy for you overworked parents --
  10. Wonderful new CD which has an assortment of tracks recorded between 1968 and 1989. Most of the selections find Ms. Dearie in a trio setting, but on 5 of the selections she is backed by the Metropole Orchestra. Love her version of "Both Sides Now".
  11. Hot Barbecue is also included on this two-fer CD issued by the UK's Beat Goes Public label
  12. This is a very powerful musical composition. Perhaps Ms. Akiyoshi's most important album . . . I'm still waiting on my copy from Amazon. Should be here next week. I also have a Blossom Dearie CD in this series also on backorder with Amazon. "Imagine My Frustration" is one of my favorite performances by Ella!
  13. After years of searching for a reasonably priced, still in good condition copy, this finally arrived in the mail yesterday -- It's a 4 CD set. From it, today I listened to: Mr. S kept himself to a minimum on this album. He only shows up on two tracks, each time with other performers. Heck, Johnny Prophet gets three tracks. Anybody know anything about him? He doesn't even have a Wikipedia page. He's got kind of a Andy Williams/John Davidson quality about him. This is all the info I found. Sammy Davis' "Too Darn Hot" might be the highlight here, but I also love Keely Smith's "Always True To You (In My Fashion)" (which is Cole Porter at his best; that "Harris pat / Paris hat" line is almost too clever for its own good, but he makes it work). As noted in the under-informative liner notes booklet, "Brush Up Your Shakespeare" is noticeably missing here. and Sinatra kept some of the best songs for himself here: "This Nearly Was Mine". "Some Enchanted Evening", "Twin Soliloquies" (with Keely Smith -- gosh they were a great singing pair; I really wish they had made and entire album together during those Reprise years), and a reprise of "Some Enchanted Evening" (with Rosemary Clooney). The other two albums in the set, Finian's Rainbow and Guys and Dolls, I already had, the former on LP and the latter on CD, so I'm kind of familiar with them. I'll give a listen to them later. Looking at Wikipedia, I saw that this CD set was issued, coincidentally enough, on Sep. 26, 2000 -- so today is its 21st birthday!
