  1. I've been listening to this CD off and on now. Not to belittle Threadgill's own playing, which is great, but it seems to me that some of the best moments of this recording are when the 4 other musicians are playing without Threadgill. They simmer and fidget and pop in ways that one does not often encounter. Great stuff. LIberty Ellman should record more.

  4. I just saw an ECM ad about this in JazzTimes. I don't know when the release date is, but it should be a really interesting and lively disc. I read a NYT review of one of their gigs some time ago and I salivated then. Good thing there will be a recording.

  5. Hi folks. I had given up rock music because everything I tried sounded good for the first couple of songs or a couple of spins, but soon grew boring and tiresome. But by a sort of accident, I think I found something. Yeah Yeah Yeahs!! I am not sure why they work for me, but they do. So far I am really enjoying their newest CD -- "It's Blitz!" I guess I like the fact that the lead singer has personality in spades. She's a sort of a cross between Debbie Harry and Chrissie Hynde. And both the guitarist/keyboardist and the drummer are quite good. The songs are catchy and different.

    Merry Christmas!!

  8. Trombonist Michael Dessen has two recordings as the leader:

    (1) Lineal - (Circumvention) - a trio/quartet date with Vijay Iyer, Mark Dresser, Susie Ibarra, Jorge Roeder, Bob Weiner, & Terry Jenoure

    (2) Between Shadow and Space (Clean Feed) -- a trio recording with Christopher Tordini, & Tyshawn Sorey.

Both are fantastic recordings with the trio pieces just as good as, though very different from, those by BassDrumBone. These are really amazingly exciting and elegant recordings.

  9. Thanks, everyone, for the tips. And esp. to Norm for very helpful posts. I think I was listening to Wilco's "Summerteeth". Don't you think some songs have the same vibe as "Pigs on the Wing"?

In any case, I may be on the last leg of my Great Dip into the Pop Music 2009. Nothing seems to really grab me. Or if they do, repeated listens seem to lessen the music's interest rather than increasing it. Even Son Volt and Uncle Tupelo seem a bit boring after a few listens. I'm taking a break, and will give them one more spin each when I return to town next week. I will probably give up after that.

  10. OK, Spoon and the Shins did not work out. I found the vocals a bit too generic, tepid, and "kiddish", if that is a word. Luckily, Waterloo takes returns. I exchanged the two for Uncle Tuopelo, "No Depression" and Son Volt, "Trace". These may be keepers. I like Jay Farrar's voice. Finally, a vocalist who sounds like a grownup. These sound good so far. The only concern is that the songs seem the same. They seem to blend into each other. I kinda have the same problem with REM. Hopefully, with more listens, I'll distinguish them from each other. I also tried an early Wilco at the store too. I never could get into Pink Floyd, despite the attempts of my hipper friends to get me interested, and this Wilco recording sounded too much like PF to me. Oh well. Thanks, everyone, again.

  11. OK, folks. I already have more recommendations than I can handle. Thanks though. I've just gotten copies of a Shins CD and a Spoon CD. Spoon seems like I may like it. I'm a bit down on the Shins -- a bit too tepid on the vocals. There is a distinct possibility that one necessary criterion for me is nostalgia! I may be unable to really get into pop music that I didn't go to high school with. (By the way, it is Sting's first solo album that initially got me into jazz. But then I didn't listen to jazz again until grad school.)

I like the drummer for Rush, but I find the songs a bit dated -- too seventies. And the singer is a bit too shrill for me. And I find Cold Play really annoying. I think the Guardian calls them the "Mope Squad", and that seems apt. My animosity may be partly based on jealousy though -- I've always had a thing for Gwyneth Paltrow.

The popular music singers I like best are Willie Nelson and Debbie Harry. Too bad they don't play with bands that have moving parts. The backing music sounds all so static. I'd love to hear Willie Nelson with . . . say, the BassDrumBone! Wouldn't that be exciting? How about Paul Motian or Han Bennink with Bill McHenry and Nate Wooley behind Debbie Harry? :excited:

And one mystery for me is why there is no jazz that really takes advantage of the country and western idiom. Bill Frisell should be interesting but he is not. All his CDs are so damn boring. I once suggested to Ab Baars that he should record a CD of Willie Nelson songs. As you may know, he recorded a really great CD of old Native American songs. Ab said he'd think about it.

  12. Thanks, everyone. And thanks to Lon for the welcome. I've just listened to some sound clips. And the Shins and Spoon sound really good. I will try them next time I'm at Waterloo.

One thing I've noticed about the recent pop music. It seems that the squeaky, girlish singing among female vocalists is really quite popular. I thought we had left that behind some time in the 1930s. Even Shelby Lynn, who has this throaty, earthy, wonderful voice when she performs live sounds girlish on studio tracks. What gives?

  13. So here I am a new resident of Austin, TX. Indie rock is all the rage here, and the local record store (Waterloo) seems to stock only about a dozen jazz titles. So, I am thinking that I should go the Roman route and get into a little bit of rock. Any recommendations? I haven't listened to rock music since the 1980s. I still like a bit of U2 and a bit of REM. My favorite I guess is the Police -- I went to 3 concerts during their recent reunion tour! I like Stewart Copeland's drumming especially, and Andy Summers's transparent guitar-playing, and Sting is not bad as a singer. Here are some of my criteria for what I think I would like. If you think that there is something out there that fits or approximates, please let me know.

    (1) Quartet or smaller. Don't want a lot of instruments or a lot of processing (i.e. heavy production). Would like a basic rock outfit.

    (2) Good instrumentals, esp. good drumming. Preferably no cheesy guitar solos.

    (3) Preferably no embarrassing or cringe-inducing lyrics (like Sting!).

    (4) Preferably something recent. Don't care for psychedelic stuff.

    (5) Preferably not a group heavily into pastiche or postmodern approach of combining different styles to show that they have done homework and are clever.

    (6) I like clarity of sound. I find some of REM and most of Sonic Youth frustrating to listen to because of the murky sound.

    Any recommendations? Thanks in advance.

  14. I've picked up, and am now enjoying a lot, a couple of sax-bass.drums trio abums: Stephen Riley's "Inside Out" and J.D. Allen's "Shine". I am a little perplexed. Why do I find these players more listenable than countless other tenor players out there? I can tell that people like Joshua Redman, Mark Turner, and many others are just as accomplished and technically proficient as these two, but the former don't do anything for me. Whereas Riley and Allen are really enjoyable to listen to. I wonder why.

  15. Chet Baker, “In Paris” (EmArcy Japan/UCCU 5176) obi [20-bit; selections from 1955-1956 Barclay sessions; Twardzik, Boland, etc.]

Does this have all of Twardzik's Paris recordings with Baker?

    Thanks.

I don't think so. This CD has just some selections from the Barclay dates. It's a very nice selection with a very nice cover. But if you are looking for a complete set, you need to get the Barclay box issued by Universal a couple of years ago.
