  1. NP: Angel Romero - Spanish Guitar Virtuoso (Seraphim, 2000) Works by Albéniz, Torroba, Tárrega & Turina Those sorts of breakthroughs are so gratifying! Like someone suddenly turned on the lights in a formerly dark place.
  2. Picked this up for peanuts at a library sale. I didn't even know it existed. First listen. A Tribute to John Coltrane: Blues for Coltrane (Impulse, 1988) - Tracks 1-3 with Sanders - Track 4 trio - Tracks 5-7 with Murray First impression: Cecil McBee & Roy Haynes sound great together. Gerald Wilson rules.
  3. Now streaming this. Yes sir. The Magic Triangle are DEEP in the pocket on this one.
  4. Yes! ❤️ ❤️ Thanks for the heads-up on this, Peter. Walton is one of my favorite pianists too. I'll check it out!
  5. I'm now listening to Disc 2 from Bobby Hutcherson's Mosaic Select set:
  6. Now dipping into this wonderful set: CD 6 - Schubert: Symphonies No. 8 "Unfinished" and No. 9 "The Great" Thrilling stuff. Oh how interesting. Isn't it mysterious how we instantly click with some artists -- while others remain opaque, no matter how much we try!? Berlioz was a composer for whom I had an almost immediate affinity. I first heard Symphonie fantastique in college, and I've been captivated by his music ever since.
  7. Berlioz: Symphonie fantastique; Lélio / Martinon, ON de l'ORTF, etc. (EMI)
  8. Trio Da Paz - Brasil from the Inside (Concord Picante, 1992)
  9. NP: I have both the double-LP vinyl release and this 1989 two-CD version with "I Remember Clifford" as a bonus cut. I only collect & keep really special recordings in multiple formats. This is one of them. Primo Getz. Do you any of you do the same (only keeping favorites in multi formats)?
  10. I'm a huge fan of this record. LT's other Groove Merchant album, I Offer You, is terrific too. . . . On both albums, Thompson's soprano playing (in particular) is just gorgeous. We're talking Johnny Hodges-like liquidity and shapeliness -- but on a soprano, not an alto.
  11. I love Kubelik's M1 also. But my desert-island M1 is Jascha Horenstein's with the LSO on Unicorn. In this listener's opinion, Horenstein's M1 is even more compelling than his famous M3.
  12. Baden Powell Quartet, Vol. 3 (Barclay FR, 1971) Superb.
  13. Al Di Meola - Elegant Gypsy (Columbia, 1977)
  14. Now spinning this LP, which just arrived in the mail:
  15. Dave Liebman Group - In a Mellow Tone (Zoho) with Vic Juris (g), Tony Marino (b), and Jamey Haddad (d, perc) Liebman had a terrific run with this four-piece group featuring Vic Juris. They released: - The Unknown Jobim (GMN, rec. 1999) - In a Mellow Tone (Zoho, rec. 2001) - Conversation (Sunnyside, rec. 2003) - Blues All Ways (OmniTone, rec. 2005) - Further Conversations: Live (True Azul, rec. 2007) - Turnaround: The Music of Ornette Coleman (Jazzwerkstatt, rec. 2009)
  16. Mongo Santamaria - Sofrito (Vaya, 1976)
  17. Brahms' First Symphony, as heard in this set:
