  1. After seeing/hearing her at Big Ears.
  2. On a Charles Lloyd kick after hearing him perform at Big Ears.
  3. Big Ears was a gas! There is NOTHING like live music!!! For me, the highlight of the festival was Charles Lloyd's tribute to Zakir Hussain with Ganavya and Bill Frisell. I thought the entire performance was very moving. Other high points included performances by Steve Coleman, Kris Davis, Fay Victor, Adam Rudolph, and Dan Weiss. My only disappointment: I was hoping to see Wadada Leo Smith with Vijay Iyer. But the lines were so long that I didn't get in. To the others who attended this year, what were your impressions?
  4. Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers - "In My Prime," Vol. 1 (Timeless, 1978) Solid JP CD reissue I enjoy this incarnation of the Messengers with Bobby Watson and James Williams. On this release (and Vol. 2), the regular group is augmented with Curtis Fuller and Ray Mantilla.
  5. I agree 100%. To my ears, Ichi-Ban and The Real Thing are sort of the 1970s version of Hard Bop. The evolution. IMO, Hayes' Breath of Life is another really strong record in this same vein.
  6. That makes sense to me. I always enjoy it when jazz groups have a drummer AND a percussionist.
  7. Sounds like a fun summer project.
  8. Yes! Outstanding stuff.
