  1. I've never seen this before. Listening & watching now. Tremendous !!! THANK YOU for sharing this, mjazzg!
  2. Yes. Very good! Probably my favorite Kenny Burrell from the 80s. with Ron Carter & DeJohnette. No pianist, so it has a nice open feel. For instance:
  3. Yes indeed. I'm sure you'll do a great job speaking about your father. NP:
  4. It's unlike any other Dimeola album. Apparently, his fans HATED it. Maybe that's why I love it. ... It's actually a stealth Airto Moreira record. Listen and see what you think. It's also a record that I bought when I was in high school, when it was released. One of the first in my survey that I can say that about.
  5. Now this: Martial Solal - My One and Only Love: Live at Theater Gütersloh (Intuition, 2018) Vive Solal !!!
  6. He's quite a character. I gotta say: He makes me feel better about the scale of my musical obsessions. Compared to that guy, I'm just a dabbler.
  7. I keep circling back to this lately:
  8. Damn. So much incredible music out there. Torrents and cataracts. And all we can do is drink from our tiny cups. There's only so much room!
  9. I am going to investigate these. Thank you, soulpope!
  10. I'm not at all an expert, just a listener. But I'd recommend jumping in the pool and splashing about. Your ears will tell where to go. I try not to get caught up in understanding the words -- at least at first -- because my understanding of German is sketchy, at best. I just try to absorb the music, the stuff beyond language. Afterwards, I usually circle back around to translations of the lyrics, and that offers another sort of meaning. ... At least that's how I make sense of them -- definitely the music first, then the words. I've discovered that I tend to be drawn more to female lieder singers -- performers like Janet Baker, Elly Ameling, Brigitte Fassbaender, and Margaret Price. The color and heft of each of their voices are very different, so each of them will be more or less suited for different types of songs: heavy/tragic, lyrical/pastoral, romantic, or whatever. ... One male singer recommendation -- for all German lieder, not just Schubert's: Hans Hotter. An amazing voice. Next up for me, prompted by this Schubert talk: Another excellent entry in Hyperion's series.
  11. Larry, If you've not already heard it, you might want to check out Rozhdestvensky's recording of Langgaard's Music of the Spheres. It's terrific. I once read an interview with György Ligeti. The interviewer played this record for Ligeti, who had never heard Langgaard's music before. Afterwards, Ligeti said, "Langgaard's composition anticipates my music!" (Or something to that effect.) Ligeti was very impressed. And please forgive me if I'm repeating myself. I may have shared that little anecdote before.
  12. @JSngry -- What are your impressions of those two Ed Schuller discs? I wasn't aware of them, and ... Dewey Redman! Now:
  13. The Alegre All-Stars - The Best of the Alegre All-Stars (Vampi Soul) with (among others) Johnny Pacheco, Barry Rogers, Jose "Chombo" Silva, Kako, Bobby Rodriguez, and -- most importantly -- Charlie Palmieri, who served as the group's Music Director; compiles cuts from 1961-66
  14. Airto : Identity (Arista, 1975) with Flora (of course), Herbie, Wayne, Egberto Gismonti, Raul Da Souza, Roberto Da Silva, a.o.
  15. I just checked the Hyperion website. It took 40 CDs. ... Schubert composed a lot of songs.
  16. Peter - I think Rab was referring to instrumentalists who would quickly go in and out of fashion -- not the instrument itself. I think this is at least partly due to the nature of playing the instrument. Trumpeters usually don't stay at their peak performance as long as other instrumentalists. The primes of their careers can be relatively short, compared to saxophonists or pianists or whatever. Of course, there are always exceptions.
  17. Anyone who is feeling overwhelmed by the ugliness of our world should listen to this. It's impossibly beautiful, a balm.
  18. I'm still getting to know it, but Simpson's music definitely has a lot going for it. I love the covers on Hyperion's Simpson series. His music conjures that sort of cosmic vastness.
