  1. NP: Eddie Palmieri - Exploration: Salsa - Descarga - Jazz (Coco, 1978) An amazing compilation.
  2. Yeah, that's a good one.
  3. That's an abysmal, demeaning cover image -- and it looks like Tito knows it. His facial expression speaks volumes. ... But the music is excellent. "Can't judge a book..." and all that.
  4. "America's Newest Musical Provocation" ??? ... I've never seen provocation used in that context. It made me laugh.
  5. Caldera - S/T (Capitol) I love that cover image. OTOH, I want to like the music more than I actually do. and Rahsaan Roland Kirk - A Standing Eight (32 Jazz/Warner Brothers) Disc 1 - Originally released as The Return of the 5000 Lb. Man and Kirkatron (first half) Bursting with vitality.
  6. The Best of Tito Puente: El Rey del Timbal! (Rhino)
  7. A bunch of terrific Paul Gonsalves features on this disc.
  8. Martial Solal - Bluesine (Soul Note, 1983) Solo piano Solal doesn't sound like anyone else.
  9. And now the second disc from this 2-LP set.
  10. NP: Egberto Gismonti & Academia De Danças - Sanfona (ECM, 1981) LP 1 of 2 Beautiful.
  11. Jim, Have you heard this LP? Bill Smith - Sonorities (Edipan, Italy) Recorded in 1977 -- with Enrico Pieranunzi (p), Giovanni Tommaso (b), and Pepito Pignatelli (d) I stumbled across it on discogs when I was digging into Pieranunzi's discography, but I've never heard it. Doesn't appear to be through-composed, "classical" music.
  12. Count Basie Encounter Oscar Peterson: Satch and Josh (Pablo/OJC)
  13. Tony Williams - Native Heart (Blue Note, 1990)
  14. Yesterday, I ordered Steve Turre's first two releases as a leader: Viewpoints and Vibrations (Stash, 1987) Fire and Ice (Stash, 1988) Anyone know who has ownership of Stash Records these days? They put out some interesting stuff back in the day.
