  1. Airto Moreira - Struck by Lightning (Venture, 1989)
  2. Never seen that Threadgill ad before! It's kinda hilarious. But good for him for making some cash off his cache.
  3. Also, it seems like, beginning in the 80s, jazz came to be very much associated with "upscale" stuff -- more than it had been in the past. A sort of cultural signifier for "classy shit." And watches would be one example of that. Associate your watch with jazz and ergo you have a classy, sophisticated watch. All marketing nonsense, of course.
  4. My guess would be latter. Yeah, I remember how digital watches kept getting bigger and BIGGER. Eventually, lots of them had calculators with full numerical keypads built in. Man, they were so ugly. ... MUCH worse than the one Paquito's wearing. Now spinning:
  5. Excellent! Sure thing!
  6. Yowza !!!
  7. Oh you're right. I'd forgotten about that! I don't disagree that there was some wretched cover (non)design during the 1980s. ...But there was some excellent cover art too, IMO. See two cases in point below, both issued on the Gramavision label: and And, more importantly, the music on these albums is every bit as good as the cover images -- if not better.
  8. One of Tito's best from the 1980s, IMO.
  9. Earlier this afternoon: CD 1 - originally released as Sonando, Sanchez's first Concord release Masterful. And hooray for Al Harewood!
  10. Amina Claudine Myers Trio - The Circle of Time (Black Saint, 1983) A great album.
  11. This is the Leroy Jenkins album that hits me hardest: Strange and wonderful. Jenkins and Grappelli are apples & oranges. ... Just because they're playing the same instrument doesn't mean that they're trying to do the same thing. Thanks for the heads-up on this, Peter. With your prompting, I'm listening to it now via YT. Good stuff.
  12. Arturo Sandoval - Hot House (N2K Encoded Music, 1998)
