  1. Completely agree with the idea that box sets can sometimes be difficult to digest -- especially those from the pre-LP era. (I usually make playlists of the original albums if the music in the box was originally released as LPs.)
  2. I agree, jazzbo. Your comment prompted me to pull this CD off the shelf: Russ Freeman & Shelly Manne - One on One (Contemporary, rec. 1982)
  3. I agree. It's a potent image.
  4. More Illinois Jacquet:
  5. NP: Illinois Jacquet - S/T (Jazz Reactivation) with Kenny Burrell, Tommy Flanagan, Wendell Marshall, Ray Lucas, and Willie Rodriguez U.K. reissue of Jacquet's Desert Winds (Argo, 1964)
  6. Giving this LP another spin: Billy Hart - Rah (Gramavision, 1988)
  7. Long, busy workday. ... Now, some music. Jim Pepper - Comin' and Goin' (Europa, 1983)
  8. John Hicks - S/T (Evidence; originally Theresa) with Bobby Hutcherson & Walter Booker
  9. Thanks for the recommendation, Gheorghe. I've not heard that one, but Konitz was a remarkably consistent performer throughout his life. So I can imagine that would be very good indeed.
  10. Two by Lee Konitz: and
  11. Albert Dailey - Textures (Muse, 1981) and Trilok Gurtu - "Usfret" (CMP, 1988)
  12. More Freddie Hubbard:
  13. Kirk Lightsey Trio featuring Freddie Hubbard - Temptation (Timeless, rec. 1987) Yessir! You're correct on both counts. Great record!
  14. Two alto sax masters: and
  15. cliff, Thanks for sharing that ECM article by Ted Gioia. I'm not particularly drawn to much of the music that Eicher's label has released -- but you've gotta give props to the guy for sticking to his vision. He's been doing it for a LONG time. ... Also, the joke that ECM stands for "excessively cerebral music" made me laugh. Hadn't heard that one before.
  16. Stanley Turrentine - Use the Stairs (Fantasy, 1980) with Wade Marcus arrangements Mr. T's last record for Fantasy
  17. Listening to House of David from this set:
  18. NP: McCoy Tyner - Just Feelin' (Palo Alto Jazz, 1985) with Avery Sharpe (b), Louis Hayes (d), and on two cuts Babatunde (perc)
  19. Ah, I see. Then I suppose I've been unaware of its presence. There's always more to discover.
  20. Funky electric avant-country blues was a thing in the 80s.
