I'm a big fan of this Cedar Walton record too. It was made at the same Keystone Korner gig that produced Bobby Hutcherson's Farewell Keystone LP.

Listening to a couple George Cables LPs from the 80s: and

I was reading about Ondas when I gave that LP a spin. Turns out that it's one of Manfred Eicher's favorites as well. In an interview, he said that he listens to Nock's record regularly to this day. When I read that, I was sort of surprised that Nock never made another record for ECM. I wonder why.

Martial Solal - Bluesine (Soul Note, 1983) solo piano Such spontaneous and eloquent thinking aloud on the piano. With Solal, even a warhorse like "Round Midnight" is fresh as morning dew.

And this one too: Love those two-sax front lines! Pepper and Frank Foster. Yeah, man!

Revisiting an old fave. I played this record incessantly during my junior and senior years of high school. I still think it's a magnificent album.

Markowitz played in the Dave Liebman's Group for 15 years or so. He still plays with Lieb in his Saxophone Summit band. Given the Liebman connection, it's not surprising that Markowitz sounds sorta similar to Richie Beirach. (Beirach also preceded him in Baker's band.) Of course, Markowitz is not as good as Richie. But he's in the same ballpark style-wise.

I'm not a huge Chet Baker fan -- but I enjoy his music. And I definitely agree with Larry on this. Baker's late-in-the-game stuff sounds much more compelling to me too. For what it's worth, I chose Broken Wing (Inner City/Gitanes) for inclusion in my 70s jazz survey. Two other Baker LPs that get pulled from the shelf relatively often: Peace (Enja) and Strollin' (Enja). Both of these are from the 1980s.

Sir Roland Hanna - Round Midnight (Town Crier)

Dexter Gordon - Gotham City (Columbia) The way that Dexter lags so far behind the beat and then comes in impossibly-late but also somehow just-right with his ENORMOUS sound -- like a regal and massive bird spreading its wings and s-l-o-w-l-y taking flight... Oh man, there's nothing else like that in jazz. And that cover photo. It's perfect. I always feel like Dexter's looking at us like we've just said something unbelievable and possibly even ridiculous. "Oh... Is that... so???"

Yes !!! One of my desert-island discs, for sure. I think you're right that Metheny is over-represented in those polls. There's just too much. Then again, Metheny did some very interesting things in the 1980s. I dig a lot of what he's done -- and what his music represents -- even if he isn't one of my very favorite artists. Just my take, of course.
