Some more grist for the mill. . . At the end of his recent book Playing Changes: Jazz for the New Century, author & critic Nate Chinen lists "The 131 Essential Albums of the Twenty-First Century (So Far)." Even though the title of Chinen's list sorta violates the spirit of this thread ("the essential" compared to "some favorites"), I thought it might generate some more fruitful discussion if I shared it. (Incidentally, does anyone think that this is objectionable from a copyright point of view? If so, I'll be happy to delete it.) I really like this trio's take-your-time-and-smell-the-roses version of "Summer Night." It's different.

I've been meaning to order that set for a long time. Haven't yet though. Need to rectify that.

I certainly love those two MD records with George Coleman -- My Funny Valentine and Four & More. Unbelievable playing by Big George on that night!!! But I love the band with Wayne too. NP:

From the same session that produced Hells Bells, recorded in London in 1975. For some reason, these solo tracks weren't released until 1991.

For Clare Fischer, I'd recommend this one: Clare Fischer and EX-42 (MPS) This LP was originally released on Revelation Records as T'DA-A-A! For Doug Carn, I'd probably go with his classic Infant Eyes:

Another of my favorite Beethoven recordings: The best Hammerklavier I've heard, bar none.

Beethoven: Sym. No. 9 "Choral" - with Kiri Te Kanawa, Julia Hamari, Stuart Burrows, Robert Holl, London Symphony Orchestra & London Symphony Chorus Bought this set to hear Jochum's Bruckner & Brahms, but I've ended up liking it best for his Beethoven. It's a tremendous LvB cycle, and the Ninth is particularly special.

I think the only CD release was on 32 Jazz. Not certain tho'.
