  1. Enrico Pieranunzi - The Day After the Silence (Alfa Music) Richie Beirach - Common Heart (Owl) Yeah!
  2. Quest - Re-Dial: Live in Hamburg (OutNote) Four masters laying down some heavy music. Interesting to hear this today after listening to the Billy Hart's Quartet yesterday. I hear Billy's influence jumping out much more as I'm listening to Quest now. That said, the two bands have very different vibes. Hart's group is much more elliptical and Monk-like. It's music with a subtle smile, not exactly jokey -- but playful in an oblique sort of way. On the other hand, Quest makes no bones about their intention throw down some heavy shit at all times -- even when the music is lyrical. They're serious, and they don't care if it's obvious that they're serious.
  3. Interesting. I'll have to look into those. I wasn't aware that Baker had made recordings with Michel Graillier. (I've tended to focus more on the recs from the 70s.) Incidentally, I also prefer late-period Baker to the earlier recordings. I'd count Peace and Broken Wing (with Phil Markowitz and J-F Jenny-Clark) as my favorites.
  4. Piano Sonata No. 15 in D, Op. 28 "Pastorale"
  5. Both CDs from this Stan Getz set reissued on Concord. Last night, it was The Dolphin. This morning, it was Spring is Here.
  6. It's a five-star record in my book.
  7. Seconded. And not just this thread. This entire forum is an education . . . and a continual challenge to keeping my music-spending in check!
  8. Mark, I haven't heard that particular compilation, but my experience with the label is that the transfers are solid. For example, their reissues of Graham Collier's music were excellent. And I've heard positive things about their reissues of Arthur Blythe's Columbia recordings. As to the legitimacy, I can't say. I assume that in some cases BGO is reissuing material that's fallen out of copyright (in the EU/UK) and in other cases obtaining permissions from the artists/estates. I seem to recall that the Collier reissues were legit. But don't quote me on that. Sorry not to have something more definitive.
  9. Tell Bev "Hello!" and that we miss his insights here on the board.
  10. One of my favorite Al Haig records. Coincidentally, I'm listening to another trio featuring the same bassist (Jamil Nasser) and drummer (Frank Gant) as heard on that Al Haig record:
  11. Hal Galper Quintet - Redux '78 (Concord) with Randy Brecker, Michael Brecker, Wayne Dockery & Bob Moses
  12. More Calderazzo: with Orlando Le Fleming & Adam Cruz
  13. Excellent! Jaki Byard - On the Spot! (Prestige) Sir Roland Hanna Quartet - Plays Gershwin (LRC)
  14. Prompted by sidewinder's Ian Carr post above: Ian Carr with Nucleus Plus - Labyrinth (Vertigo/BGO) with Norma Winstone
  15. Such a magnificent record! I'm giving Jackie a spin too:
  16. More Stan from the 1970s:
