  1. Sheila Jordan - The Crossing (Blackhawk) Damn. What a singer.
  2. That makes sense. Though, as you say, not many of those over here on this side of the pond. I think I've only got one of those Black & White reissues -- a Fats Waller solo piano set. Remember the OJC catalogs that you could get in Tower back in the day? In the days before the internet, I learned tons about jazz by poring over those!
  3. Arthur Blythe - Light Blue: Arthur Blythe Plays Thelonious Monk (Columbia) I think Thelonious would have approved. RIP Arthur Blythe
  4. Thad Jones with Kenny Burrell, Frank Wess, Mal Waldron, Paul Chambers, Art Taylor - After Hours (Prestige) This is one of the best Prestige jam sessions, imho. Yes sir! Good stuff.
  5. Sonny Criss - Saturday Morning (Xanadu/Elemental) Outstanding.
  6. I wondered if anyone would catch it. NP: Jim Hall - Live in Tokyo (King Japan) with Don Thompson & Terry Clarke
  7. Recently, I've really enjoyed the "Xanadu Master Edition Series" from Elemental. I also have quite a few 32Jazz reissues of the Muse catalog. I'm not sure whether those count as a "series." But, in any case, it's some of my favorite music. For vinyl, I really like "RCA Victor Vintage Series" -- most of them had the wine-rack design on the cover. Between Bechet, JRM, Duke, Fats, and others, there's just so much great music there. ...And I still enjoy spinning those LPs -- even if most of the music has been reissued more comprehensively in other sets. There's a lot to be said for an artfully-programmed single LP of music originally released as 78s. Often, they feel more approachable than the huge, "impossible-to-hear-in-one-sitting" boxes.* * Not that I'd ever want to give up any of those box sets! Oh yeah. Good call.
  8. Complete Capitol Fifties Jack Teagarden Sessions (Mosaic) Disc 1 I found this set in a thrift store a few months back -- for $6. No book or box, but all four discs in NM condition. A nice find.
  9. Brad Mehldau - Live at The Village Vanguard: The Art of the Trio Volume Two (Nonesuch)
  10. On the way into work this morning, more from the Timeless All Stars: It's Timeless: Recorded Live at Keystone Korner (Timeless) Next: Old and New Dreams - S/T (ECM) It's definitely a good one.
  11. Now spinning this LP: Timeless All Stars - Timeless Heart (Timeless, 1983) with Harold Land, Curtis Fuller, Bobby Hutcherson, Cedar Walton, Buster Williams & Billy Higgins Earlier: Albert Mangelsdorff Quartet - Never Let It End (MPS)
  12. Thanks, Billy. I'll keep an eye out for it. NP: Charles Mingus - Mingus Moves (Atlantic)
  13. So sorry to hear of his passing. R.I.P.
  14. Herbie Hancock - The Piano (Columbia)
  15. Stone Alliance - S/T (PM) Their debut from '76.
  16. Pat Martino - Head & Heart: Consciousness / Live! (32 Jazz / Muse) Such a dark, churning, serpentine sound! This is music that feels like a living, breathing thing. Doesn't get any better than that.
  17. The Mulgrew Miller Trio - Live at the Kennedy Center, Vol. 2 (MaxJazz)
  18. First listen. Just downloaded: Frank Foster & the Loud Minority - Manhattan Fever + 2 (Denon) This is a different record than the Blue Note release with the same title. The BN Manhattan Fever was recorded in '68, and this Denon LP was made in '77. This download also includes two bonus tracks -- the two side-long songs that made up another Frank Foster Denon LP, Bursting Out. And this: Freddie Redd - Straight Ahead! (Interplay)
  19. via YT: Duke Ellington & His Orchestra - Rotterdam 1969 (Storyville)
  20. Terry Gibbs / Buddy DeFranco - Chicago Fire (Contemporary)
  21. Buddy DeFranco Quintet - Like Someone in Love (Progressive)
  22. More Buddy DeFranco: Gone with the Wind (Storyville) Recorded 1977
  23. That's ^ a great record! I've always wondered about that Bill Hardman Muse LP. Is it worth tracking down??? NP: Buddy DeFranco - Free Sail (Choice)
  24. Tommy Flanagan - Plays the Music of Harold Arlen (Inner City) with George Mraz & Connie Kay; Helen Merrill also sits in on one cut Enrico Pieranunzi Trio - New Lands (Timeless) with Marc Johnson & Joey Baron
  25. Sir Roland Hanna - Piano Soliloquy (L+R)
