Helluva record! Along with Medina & Spiral, the best of the Land/Hutcherson collaborations, imho. But they're ALL great.

John Carter and James Newton were also on Gramavision. EDIT: Just remembered: Bob Moses made a couple great records for Gramavision too.

YEAH. Good for you, xybert! I'm not even a Steve Coleman fan -- I'm not really familiar with his music -- but I'm glad that you're sticking up for him!!! Sheesh, a simple article about Steve Coleman -- and suddenly there's a big storm of HATE -- about the artist and the writer. Good grief, people!

Hold on a second. Iyer didn't couch his statement about the importance of Coleman in absolute terms. It was a reference to how much Coleman meant to Iyer, not an attempt to diminish the importance of Coltrane. Look at the quote: Vijay Iyer, who once declared in JazzTimes magazine that Mr. Coleman was, for him, as important a figure as John Coltrane, someone who “has contributed an equal amount to the history of the music.” I don't have any problem with that statement because he's seems to be making it from a personal point of view, not as some sort of music historian.

Anyone else looking forward to watching the NFL draft tonight? I'm hoping that the Falcons draft someone who can actually put pressure on opposing teams' quarterbacks. (What a novel concept!) Last year, we had the second fewest sacks and the worst 3rd down defense in the league. Ugh. I'm also interested in seeing who selects Todd Gurley. Since I went to the University of Georgia and follow the football program, I'd like to see him land with a good team.

Earlier this evening, I listened to Lew Tabackin's Rites of Pan, an Inner City LP:

Yeah. Good stuff. The Mark Weinstein LP above reminded me of a more recent Weinstein recording that I've enjoyed: It's not really "avant-garde" -- but it does seem to echo that late-60's Blue Note "inside out" vibe. (Think Bobby Hutcherson or Andrew Hill.) The pianist, Aruán Ortiz, is especially impressive.

I agree 100% percent re: Jones' "Hill Country Suite." It's a gem. Plus, how can you go wrong with a George Mraz & Freddie Waits rhythm section?
