  1. He's flown under my radar too -- but he plays very well on this date. I just checked Discogs. He also recorded with Mike Mainieri, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Linc Chamberlain, Tony Purrone, and others.
  2. Jim, as far as my own assessment: I don't feel like I've read enough of the book yet to give you a meaningful answer. I'll check back in after I've read more. At that point, I can give an informed thumbs up or down. That said, it's an ASCAP-Deems Taylor award-winning book, so I think it's safe to assume that it's not simply a "fan overview." Also, FWIW, George Clinton wrote the foreward and he gives the book his seal of approval.
  3. It focuses mostly on the music -- but there's also some biographical and sociological aspects too.
  4. So far, so good. I haven't made it very into it yet, though.
  5. Now streaming this:
  6. Jochum's Bruckner 7th is glorious -- as is his entire Bruckner cycle with the Staatskapelle Dresden. NP: Disc 1
  7. A very, very special recording for me. Walter's reading of Brahms' Second Symphony was my "gateway" into classical music, and it remains close to my heart.
  8. After recently seeing George Clinton & P-Funk in concert -- an astounding experience -- I started reading this:
  9. DG's reply was noncommittal. Basically, they said, "Watch the Coming Soon page."
  10. Now streaming, prompted by some recent discussion on this thread: Joachim Kühn - This Way Out (MPS, 1973) features some superb drumming by Daniel Humair Perhaps the title should have been Not Two, Not One, but Twenty-Five.
  11. Roger, I agree 100%. I'm glad they've reissued some titles like, say, John Taylor's Decipher and Joe Henderson's Mirror, Mirror. . . . But MORE, please! Regarding downloads: Another option, aside from iTunes is qoboz. They appear to have most MPS titles, and they offer uncompressed, CD-quality files. Plus, their prices are reasonable. (No commercial connection.)
  12. I just reached out to Dusty Groove to see if they'll be stocking these reissues. If I get a response, I'll share it here.
  13. Now streaming: Jasper van 't Hof's Pork Pie - The Door Is Open (MPS, 1976) with Charlie Mariano, Philip Catherine, Bo Steif, and John Marshall QUESTION: I know that Philip Catherine is half English and half Belgian. How does he pronounce his name? Phi-LEEP CAT-er-ina (French)? Or PHIL-up CATHER-in (English)? Or some other way?
  14. Prompted by Rab's earlier post (and subsequent commentary): Three faves.
  15. Yeah, I would put Ming at the top of the heap too -- along with New Life. I didn't realize that they were discontinuing those. Bummer. Oh well. All good things come to an end.
  16. Taking a voyage to Strata-East (via Mosaic): Charles Tolliver - Mosaic Select 20 Now -- Disc 2: Originally released as Charles Tolliver Music Inc., Live in Tokyo Last night -- Disc 1: Originally released as Charles Tolliver Music Inc., Live at Slugs', Vols. 1 & 2 Powerful, serious, swaggering music !!!
  17. Now: Earlier: OJC reissue
