Prog demands a certain level of energy too. PF isn't much of an energetic band. There is also not much of a fusion of styles happening in PF.

Judging Zappa on the basis of one or two select albums is a mistake. You shouldn't be so quick to dismiss something you obviously aren't familiar with. agreed.

are you experienced is pretty good. never heard zappa album i enjoyed So Hendrix is OK and pretty good. What Zappa did you hear?

...keeping in mind that I haven't heard anything new by either of them in 20 years.

They both get on my nerves, but the music isn't too bad...for what it is. I hear too much about them and not much about the music.

well, they definitely have prog rock albums. have you heard animals? about as traditional proggy as it gets and bands like amt def still adhere to prog principals. long indulgent ever changing songs, concept albums. Of course I've heard Animals. I heard them play it at Madison Sq. Garden in '77. PF isn't - for me - complex enough to be a progrock band.

For example, Pink Floyd is not a progrock band.

I guess not. I'm not sure they're prog bands. eh. japanese noise wank. definitely falls somewhere in prog. but no, not your typical prog band like Yes or Pink Floyd or Tool Japanese noise wank isn't prog rock. It's noise. It's wank. Sounds like it would be at home in the Psychedelic Rock drawer.
