Cheapo-bought this one: Pretty much 1s & 2s on this one, no really strong 3s, but the 2s make the cut: "Ain't That Right" - an ugly girl song. I don't always like ugly girl songs, but when I do, I prefer them to be a putdown of somebody who thinks they're Miss Thing, and to have an idiomatically sympathetic tenor solo, so yeah, there it is."I Don't Know" - nothing really special, just a good Latin-Soul Love Song that does what it does by being what it is and leaving ot to somebody else to worry about it."Tuxedo Junction" - my god, I've had to play so many bad arrangements of this that were not fun...this one feels like fun, so, yeah, just because."Show Me" - groovy Joe Tex cover, totally works because of the horn's phrasing over the rhythm. More solos and this would be a 3."Black Coffee" - Same, only more so. Great tempo, great horn phrasing, KILLER groove, coulda been stretched out for the Discriminating Consumer, but oh well about that."Night Walk" - makes the cut, but barely. Curiosity factor more than anything. How did a Steve Huffsteter tune get on a 1967 Willie Bobo record? So, lessee...2:35 + 2:32 + 2:15 + 2:15 + 2:42 + 3:05 = 13:34 (it's a damn short album, that's for sure, > 30 minutes, and but only three tunes were on the original Finest Hour, including what I assume is the original version of "Evil Ways") 13:34 + 10:28 = 24:02 I now have, my my own criteria, Willie Bobo's Finest Hour and 24:02. Gettin' there!

Forgot about that Pausa side, and forget why I never picked it up. Pausa was an easy label to get for a while. Never had access to the Fluid side. Time to start a course of corrective acquisition...but I still say believe the hype about this one.

I have no problem with either vanity or the need to stay in the spotlight. Somebody's going to do it, and I'd rather it be somebody for whose work towards which I feel an affinity. Other than most of You're Under Arrest, I feel an affinity for Miles' work, so hey, go ahead and be famous, go ahead and get rich, go ahead and stake out turf in the Broader Mass Consciousness that for any number of reasons you're not "supposed" to have. Go ahead and do that. Nothing to apologize for in any of that. Besides, there's a disconnect between the constant jazzfan whining about unworthy celebrities and then bitching some more about one who actually was worthy. Miles Davis understood music, and he understood celebrity and he understood that they were not the same thing and he understood that you gotta work for anything you get, be it musical or material. Bottom line - people who find fame and fortune unbecoming shouldn't feel cheated when they don't get it. Yeah, Miles was an often unscrupulous asshole, etcetcetc yadadingdangday, Miles also built brand-recognition that might survive the 21st Century longer than Chrysler or General Motors. That's something else with which I have no problem, None whatsoever. Somebody's going to do that, too, and I'd rather it be somebody whose work for which I feel an affinity. Perhaps we are just a little,,,disoriented when the ownership class changes in "type" yet still behaves as ownership. That's not how the program was written. Oh well! -

Just finished listening. No matter how big the hype you'll hear about this release, believe it. As much as I've liked Streams & Hues over the years, those trios were not this trio, and even at that, this trio as captured here is comprised of more mature/developed players than it was when it was a regular touring group. So, yeah. Believe the hype, because this time, as occasionally happens when life is in a good mood, it's true.

These are the two I keep coming back to on St. Domenic, when I come back to it. I've about reached the pint where I just listen to Veedon Fleece and get the same thing in shorter doses that are just as effective. Still, glad to have these two, and I'm shocked as hell that it's not in print on CD. But neither is A Period Of Transition, which is admittedly a lesser album, except when it's not (Flamingos Fly). -

Yes, I had you in mind. Then again, maybe not. But $17.00 for three CDs of music that ranges from "nice" to nice is a good deal, period, unless one does not ever do either "nice" or nice and/or Brazil, in which case, this will not be a product of interest.

Sorry, missed that one. But geez, this label's survived for 10 years, so they must be serving their market (whoever it is) well, that's all I can say. I'll be buying some more of their stuff, for sure. They've released Monday's latest album as well, and the story that she tells in the liner notes is that she had never heard of the label either, and then one day a box shows up with copies of almost their entire catalog. She was unfamiliar with almost all of it, and she's not exactly a rookie when it comes to musics Brazilian,so ...Adventure Music indeed, at least some of it is.

http://www.dustygroo...p%3Bincl_cs%3D1 Picked this up b/c of the compiler, for whose own work I have infinite respect and admiration, and was not disappointed. Mostly Brazilian artists, with a few American mandolin-centric "string music" things (about which I know even less than the Brazilian cuts). All of it seems to be rooted in the tradition, nothing really post-analog in concept or execution, so maybe relative to contemporary Brazil, this stuff is all harmlessly retro like, like a 3 CD set of Eric Alexander And Friends or something like that, but damn, some of these melodies are moving in their sheer elegance. Some are just polite, but some are genuinely elegant. Or at least seem to be to me. Ear of the behearer, and all that, etc. There's nothing really "bad" on here, and enough of it is intriguing to one degree or another to merit replays of all three discs to get a handle on where to go or not go from here. Haven't even bothered to follow along yet to see who's doing what, but anticipate following up on some of these artists in full-album form. Three CDs worth of new music for under $20.00 is a deal I can recommend to almost anybody. Track listing (courtesy of Amazon, where the price is a buck higher.
