  2. Picked it up thinking it was going to be a big-band backing, took a few tunes to adjust to the fact that it wasn't, as well as that there weren't going to be any real solos or obligattos by either Carmel Jones or Teddy Edwards, as well as that Ernie Freemans' organ was just going to hold those chords on and on, but - after making those adjustments, Sarah's in great form here herself, and hell, it is her album after all.
  3. If I'm going to go to YouTube and pick one song to determine if there will or won't be any further interest, which one would you recommend?
  4. So what "genre" does she work in, broadly speaking? Pop, dance-pop, hip-hop-pop, rock-pop, mom-pop, pop-pop? I like Alice Russell pretty well, often enough. If she's out of that bag, I might want to check her out. If it's just More Pop for More Radio. I think I'd just as soon leave it alone, that much more for everybody else.

  12. "upper intervals" may not be an accurate quote, but it's not an inaccurate not an unimportant observation about hoe all the chromatic substitutions the bop masters like Bird had at their coomnad. "Upper intervals" create other chords inside/on top of the original, and once you see where the potential pivot points are, you can substitute at will, It's the same thing Ornete stated doing, only he dropped the per-ordained reference point s of fixed song structures. I'll need for the ambien to wear off in order to effectively describe what those "upper intervals" offer in therm of suddenly broadening harmonic horizons, but suffice it to say, they are many. They open up all kinds of scenic routes, and once they get to opening, no telling how long before they get closed again, or if they ever do.
  13. The truth for me has nothing to do with that chili house story and/or the verisimilitude of the quote, it's that I always figured that Biddy Fleet was some local layabout guy who had a gig in the back room of a Harlem chili house, and it appears that he was a pretty damn good musician in his own right, maybe coulda been a bigger name if not for a sense of domestic responsibility, maybe. I mean, who knew (other than the ultra uber-geeks)?

I'm leaning towards pretty damn hip genius myself! Are you hearing his comp on that video? There are plenty of full-time piano players who aren't that hip!

    Willie Maiden

Found Kenton At Brigham Young on LP for $1.25 a few days ago, hadn't heard it in 35-40 years, so figured, hey, the price is right..anyway, Willie's piece "Kaleidoscope"...I did not appreciate the full measure of it's brilliance until now. Genius, pure genius. One of those things where the first thing that comes to your mind is "who the hell could even think of something like this" and the more you hear it (and I keep repeating it, good exercise, vinyl is), the more the thought changes to "even if you could think of something like this, how the hell do you actually make it work?" Guess you gotta be a genius, or at the very least pretty damn hip.
