  3. The social/intellectual dynamic which produced the great, undeniably(you know, the by now (mostly) dead guys that all of us - including myself - continue to draw inspiration of all types from) individual jazz players no longer exists. Or, to be more accurate, it has evolved. The question has now become, imo, how bad do we want/need to hold on to the "style" at the possible expense of losing relevancy to the evolved "substance" of this dynamic? And as a corollary to that - does a music that comes from a different dynamic yet still "sounds like" jazz qualify as same (and what difference does it make)? And as a further corollary - what does it mean that these questions are even being asked in the first place? Jazz is dead. Long live jazz.

  19. Now now, that is how rumors get started! Tell me about it. Between the years of 1978 & 1981. my life took the following turns, in this order: I began publicly playing and recording "free" jazz I took a house gig at a cumbia club which lasted almost a year, The clientele was exclusively illegal immigrants I moved in with a woman that I met at the club After the gig and the relationship ended, I went on the road for a little over a year with a "show band". While on the road, I met LTB in Albuquerque When the road gig ended, I moved to Albuquerque to begin life in earnest w/Brenda Well, when we moved back to Dallas in 1984, I was astounded to meet more than a few people who told me that they had heard that I had moved to Mexico, married a Mexican woman, and was involved in a radical political organization there, having actually been imprisoned for playing subversive music. WTF?
  20. Because, as pathetically behind the times as I am, I'm just now starting to listen to what is referred to as House, and it sounds a helluva lot like the best Disco. And I'm digging the shit out of it too. The shit's got slink aplenty, and god knows I dig the slink. But I always dug the best Disco for that exact reason. So, is it really the same thing? And what about the various sub-genres like Deep House, Acid House, etc? Whaddup there? Or am I asking the wrong people? Rachel, Noj, anybody, HELP!
