  2. Well, make what you will out of Brubeck's "heavy-handedness" (and I for one get tired of it fairly quickly), even if it is largely a result of a physical injury. What he always has had, and what The Lion responded to, was authority. Cat plays it like he means it in ni uncertain terms. Always has. Gotta respect that.
  3. Just which side of the bed is the wrong one, anyway? And what happens if you get out of bed at the foot end? Is that a potential wrong side, or does the triangulation thing sorta negate the potentiality for wrong-sidedness? You know, does two sides plus a foot sorta form a pyramid of bedness and therefore create a powerful field of positive energiness? These are the things I'm worried about these days, having figured out most of the other shit. Any informed and/or constructive information would certainly be welcome!
  4. Worth noting, perhaps, that Willie The Lion Smith praised Brubeck's blues playing in no uncertain terms in a DB BFT back in the day.
  5. What is my assessment? Cat was a helluva player, that's my assessment.

  7. No. The way to go would be the Falling In Love With Love, The Source and/or Lost Found, & All The Way. Those albums are iconic statements. Scott's Milestone sides are all good, but none capture him at either his vocal or interpretive peak the way those do.
  8. And I our 23rd... All I can say, having met both parties, is that quality attracts quality, and character attracts character. "Personality" is the least of worries over time. Anne is a truly beautiful woman, and Chuck is one helluva straight-up kinda guy. Much love for them, individually and collectively.
  9. That was the seemingly unanimous consensus of those who actually knew Bird, as it was with the Ross Russell bio.
  10. Herbie's used a vocoder.
  11. Forrest Whittaker would make a good Cannonball.
  12. Indeed. That's how I first came to hear him, on Henry's Pi releases. Threadgill's never worked with a drummer who's turned in less than exceptional performances, and Prieto's work is no exception.

  14. Billy on record is great. Billy live is beyond great. The "flaws" that may exist on records are swept away by the sheer physical & spiritual energy of him & his group. Don't miss it if you ever get a chance to hear him.
  15. I don't think I qualify as a serious jazz musician either. I like dance music, I'm intrigued by hip-hop/electronica production techniques, I enjoy vocals (well, some of 'em), I don't mind talking to an audience, and I don't mind playing requests (well, some of 'em). Guess I'm a muddle-headed sellout. Oh well!
  16. Are there no better headphones available in this man's country?

  23. Which EW&F did you get? Undergroove Collection, or one of the others? Anyone heard the J5 volume 2? Yeah, Undergroove. Only I got it as part of a UK two-CD set from Dutty Goove. It was $16.99 and in stock. Undergroove's $26.99 and out of stock. So for $10 less, I got a "best of" type CD + a $27 remix CD. Heckuva deal. Haven't heard/gotten the J5 V2, but have a request in at da' Bastids. I'll be carpe dieming like a mug if and when it gets back in stock. Them's some good vittles. BTW - what's a serious jazz tenorist such as yourself doing listening to remix collections?
  24. Hey - it's their world. How's about we all just decide not to live in it any more than absolutely necessary?
