Johnny Richards - Rare Alternate Arrangement of Omo Ado
Teasing the Korean replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in Artists
I would say the Kenton albums Richards arranged are a much better starting place. The only Richards album I really like is Rites of Diablo. Like Stan Kenton, Richards has the capacity of simultaneously being hip and square. -
Because the historic argument about the majors not releasing older material was the time and work involved in the remastering relative to the poor sales. This argument evaporates once the work has already been completed. So, as a curious human being living in the 21st century, I am trying to understand the corporate argument against releasing the material digitally. They stand only to gain and not to lose. I used Mosaic as an example here because they generate interest among this board's demographics. I may have used different examples elsewhere.

Because only some people want the physical product. Some don't, and some may want only selected albums in the sets. I buy lots of limited edition film scores, and many of these are offered as lossless downloads after the physical product sells out. Why should Universal should not upload these? Mosaic has zero say in the matter.

Did you watch these shows? If you had, you would remember that the Jonny Quest music is very different from the music of those you cited. -

Same experience here, which was precisely why I ordered it the day it was released. -
This is the time of year when TTK mixes rum cocktails and spins Latin Jazz and exotica. This evening marks the year's first spin of Kenya by Machito. While Machito occasionally sprinkled exotica into his sets, notably on "Asia Minor" and "Oboe Mambo," Kenya is the one Machito album I file in the exotica section. There is a heavy element of exotica, cover art featuring tribal masks (not from Kenya, incidentally), no vocal numbers, and more jazz content than you sometimes get with Machito. Cannonball plays alto, and the arrangers include Mario Bauza and AK Salim. The whole thing has a desperate, low-budget, B-film quality about it, which is high praise coming from me. The stereo separation is a little wonky, and bass player's tumbao patterns are sometimes sharp. (If you're going to play bass out of tune, better off playing a little flat.) Highly recommended.

Did you get the 2-CD set that La-La-Land released in 2016? It is incredible. Hoyt Curtin is very under-appreciated. Looks like it's still in print! https://lalalandrecords.com/jonny-quest-limited-edition-2-cd-set/ -
I am assuming that after Mosaic sets go out of print, the masters resort to the original rights holders. At that point, are they sold digitally by the original labels, e.g. EMI/Universal, either as complete boxes or broken into original albums or, in other cases, smaller chunks? I would consider buying some of these as lossless downloads from Qobuz if they were available.

This is a very beautiful tune, once you get past the very scary intro, and start at around 1:35. "Oluo Anu" sounds similar to my wife's pet name for me, so in the summer, when we listen to this album and drink rum, when the pretty ladies sing "Oluo Anu," my wife sings along with my name! -

Yes, I'd forgotten that the soloists are specified on each track. I did a CD-R with Cuban Fire, plus the seventh track that didn't make Cuban Fire; Rites of Diablo, and the alternate "Omo Ado," posted above. It all fits, and it's a great listen. I've had other Johnny Richards albums, including Wide Range and Spanish Spoken Here, but they didn't do it for me. -

Do you know the album? It is FANTASTIC, kind of like a more exotica version of Cuban Fire. The clip above is mono. My copy of the album is stereo. The separation is a little severe, as was common at the time, and the percussion sometimes gets buried under the brass, but generally, the sound is very good in spite of those quirks. -
Thank you!

I mean which thread in the Live Music sub-forum? I see nothing about Hank Mobley.

I recently waddled over to Qobuz and purchased an inexpensive download bundle of a bunch of Sabu albums. Included in the download was the entire Johnny Richards Rites of Diablo album, along with this alternate arrangement of the opening track, "Omo Ado." This is a different arrangement. The LP version clocks in at 6:03, and this one at 4:22. -

Since we discussed this last year, I realized that I have this by Tony Bennett on IIRC his San Francisco album. -
Today is the 103rd birthday of violinist/composer/ethnomusicologist Elisabeth Waldo. She was born in 1918, and is still with us today. Waldo was influenced by Revueltas and Ginastera, with whom she worked early in her career. Waldo is best remembered for a series of albums she did in the late 1950s/early 1960s using authentic pre-Columbian instruments.

There's a good place in Fishtown, forget the name of it. Maybe even a couple of places in or near Fishtown.
