  1. I don't think I've ever filed by label. I have Blue Note albums in the Jazz, Now Sound, Latin, Brazilian, Space-Age Bachelor, and Exotica sections, depending. Most of the Verve albums in the Now Sound, Brazilian, or Latin sections. A few I file with Jazz.
  2. The question is prompted in part based on how I file Jimmy Smith. I filed the Blue Note albums in the Jazz section, but I file the Verve albums in the Now Sound section. I listen to both, but given the choice, I lean toward Verve.
  3. Self-explanatory.
  4. Our hero hits it out of the park with Q's theme from The Pawnbroker. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4aEBDL1T4JM
  5. Sorry, but looks and aesthetics have EVERYTHING to do with music. Do you think 70s big band/jazz rock performances would be any good if the players didn't have mutton chop sideburns, comb overs, aviator-frame glasses, and powder-blue polyester tuxedos?
  6. He looks like Dennis Wilson wearing an Afro wig!
  7. I don't know. He is a fine singer, but I don't think he ever recorded the song.
  8. Great to hear from you Jon/Noj! Glad things are going well for you! Just wanted you to know that I always enjoyed your contributions to the board and was thinking about you. Wishing you continued happiness!
  9. But that is not how I feel about your opinion!
  10. This is pretty friggin' awesome... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MtVhZor4xY
  11. If anyone is on FB, please let him know that TTK asked for him.
  12. That explains it. I'm not on FB.
  13. We'll agree to disagree. His look in the 1980s was as bad as his music.
  14. He apparently hasn't logged in for three years. I enjoyed his contributions. Anyone in touch with him?
  15. Oh, I realize that jazz is relevant to those who frequent this site. But I don't think any conversation about jazz post-2000 can or should ignore sampling by hip-hop and electronica producers. But if that is not what you are seeking, I won't go in that direction.
  16. Jazz's cultural relevance in the 2000s occurs via samples used in electronica and hip hop. So I will post some of those examples. Here is Cannonball Adderley:
  17. Check out this impossibly rare 1953 10" album by Larry Elgart on Brunswick. It sounds nothing like anything by an Elgart that I have ever heard! The album tanked, which led Larry into a more commercial direction. Completely Twilight Zone jazz:
  18. …and while you're there, pick up The Passions by Thee Great Les Baxter, featuring Bas Sheva!
  19. I highly encourage everyone to go to your local record shoppe and buy this album.
  20. Alex North's A Streetcar Named Desire (1951) is arguably the first U.S. film to use jazz elements in its score. I am obsessed with this track titled "Blanche and Mitch." The varsouvienne that begins playing at the 1:53 mark is an early sign of Blanche's unravelling.
  21. I have several F units - B&O, PRR, Erie Lackawanna, and Chicago Great Western.
  22. Good question. As for "Teranova," I thought it was a deliberate arcane reference!
  23. Well, for starters, whether it sounds like a quintet blowing through a tune, or if there is lots of space, minimal stuff, repetition. I've listened to enough film scores to get a sense of approach. The Italians almost always recorded tunes and had them placed by the director after the fact.
