A Bachelor's Guide to Sauter-Finegan
Teasing the Korean replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in Artists
I finally got a new cartridge for my turntable, so our Bachelor's Guide to Sauter-Finegan will resume soon. It is important to note that I am still in rum cocktail season, meaning that I spin mostly wild Afro-Cuban drum records and exotica. I transition from rum to Old Fashioneds sometime after Labor Day, so I will resume the Bachelor's Guide at that time. It is crucial that music enhance one's choice of cocktails, and Sauter-Finegan generally doesn't work during rum season, unless it is "Eddie and the Witch Doctor," "10,000 Years BC," "Rain," or "Moonlight on the Ganges." -
Leon "Chaino" Johnson (1927 – July 8, 1999, pronounced: "Cha-ee-no"), the self-styled "percussion genius of Africa,"[1] was an American bongo player. After touring for several years on the Chitlin' Circuit, he released several albums and became popular with listeners of exotica music in the late 1950s and early 1960s. In the promotion of his albums, a fictional biography was developed, depicting Chaino as an orphan from a lost tribe in central Africa who had been rescued by a missionary after his tribe had been massacred. Chaino was actually born inPhiladelphia and raised in Chicago. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaino

An exception for me would be Bernstein's La Mer, which was literally the first version I heard; but the Eugene Ormandy became the one that I played the most, so this is the version that I can't shake when I listen to other versions. I always think that some passage is too slow, or too fast, or that this instrument is too loud, or this other instrument isn't loud enough.

Columbia Modern Music Series - Have These Been Bundled?
Teasing the Korean replied to JSngry's topic in Classical Discussion
I bought a bundle of many of these titles for 50 cents apiece at a library sale in the 1990s. Those were the days... -
When you really fall in love with a piece, to what degree does the first interpretation you hear become the yardstick by which you measure the others? And to what degree can you "objectively"revisit that first version years later, after hearing other interpretations? Obviously, if you know what you're looking for, you will probably seek out a celebrated version to begin with. Just curious.

Ha ha!

If anyone who bought this has a big back yard and a small PA system, you should charge admission and play the entire set in real time over the weekend of the 50th anniversary!

The couple in the iconic photo on the album cover are still together. http://www.hvmag.com/Hudson-Valley-Magazine/August-2017/The-Couple-From-The-Iconic-Woodstock-Album-Cover/

I guess Dennis Wilson is not depicted in the film, as his association with Manson had ended by then?

Haven't seen it yet. Is it good?

Yeah, in fairness, the music the hippies' parents were listening to in 1969 was probably mostly crap with a few scattered gems - much like the music as Woodstock. But I would still like the parents' music more. I have zero patience for hippies.

Beautiful I love the nod to "I Get a Kick Out of You." I lucked out many years a go when I found the first 8 Tijuana Brass albums, many still in the shrink wrap, in MONO and in PRISTINE CONDITION for a buck a throw. Best eight dollars I spent in a long time.

I would love a 38-CD set of whatever the unwashed hippies' parents were listening to that weekend, preferably with cocktail recipes in the accompanying booklet.

John Cheever
Teasing the Korean replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I'm curious about the similarities or differences between the St. Botolph's location in the novels and the Shady Hill location in the short stories. -
I started this thread a while back about my LPs. I refuse to call it a "collection."
-
I had The Collected Stories of John Cheever a long time ago. I read many of the stories. I re-purchased it a few years ago, and have thus far read most of the stories. I plan on reading them all. I have never read any of his novels. I love the film adaptation of The Swimmer and the short story also. What are your thoughts on John Cheever?

Who has heard Olatunji's "Soul Makossa"?
Teasing the Korean replied to JSngry's topic in Recommendations
My wife shares my taste in music - she is responsible for probably a third of our LPs - and it is a weekend ritual before we start cooking dinner to pull out four or five LPs that we will listen to between cocktails, prepping, dining, and cleaning up. We don't always know what is going to land where. Anyway, that is a perfect dinner album in our house. Our only rule is nothing too wild on Saturday or Sunday during breakfast, especially if it's the kind of record that makes you want cocktails. Those are saved for later in the day. After dinner, we cleaned the kitchen and dining room to Walter/Wendy Carlos's Clockwork Orange LP! We roasted some tomatoes and whole garlic, and served this over a bed of spaghetti squash and sautéed spinach. Improvised, but tasty! Enjoyed with a whole-grain baguette and California Cabernet! -

So this is an amazing album, and it is moving from the O section of the Now Sound section into the perpetual party crate! -

OK, we are now spinning Soul Makossa. My wife and I have been cooking dinner, and we warmed up with a few choice selections: Music to Watch Girls by by Bob Crewe (Dynavoice, mono) and Jack Jones in Hollywood (Kapp, stereo). Now we are serving dinner and blasting this masterpiece! -

But it's not wild party music. Has anyone ever gotten laid to an ECM album? Or played one at a fondue party? -

No, silence is closer to ECM, and ECM is the opposite of Now Sound. -
