  1. I have a few Sonny Stitt albums which I'll list in a minute but I'm curious about other releases that I should investigate. I've eyed the Mosaic box that's available, but at nine cds, it's not only more than I want to spend to look into this artist, but that's a lot of music to wade through as well when you're "just exploring." Here's what I have and I love them all. Personal Appearance Verve lp Stitt Plays Bird Atlantic lp Sonny Stitt Blows the Blues Verve lp New York Jazz Verve cd Jazz at the Hi-Hat Roulette cd I saw a cd at the store today on Evidence with Sonny Stitt and the Hank Jones Trio (Duvivier and Tate). I can't remember the title, but I didn't pick it up because I wasn't sure about it and I had six cds in my hands already. Should I go back and get that one? Any other recomendation or comments (even negative ones if appropriate).
  2. I'm in a bluenote groove this morning. Speakin' My Piece - Horace Parlan (DG) Undercurrent - Kenny Drew (Classic Reissue) Easterly Winds - Jack Wilson (Liberty)
  3. This morning it was The Pepper Knepper Quintet on Metrojazz followed by Woody Shaw's Moontrane on Muse. Those Muse recordings have never sounded very good to my ears, esepecially the drums. Is this due to a close miking technique? They sound so muffled to me. Of course, the music is excellent.
  4. and now for something completely different......... Red Buddha - Stomu Yamash'ta on Vanguard
  5. I listened to Carnival last night. I just picked it up last weekend and I'm glad I did. This morning I listened to 7 X Wilder by the Bob Brookmeyer 4 on Verve. I love the way he plays piano on that album.
  6. I just picked up Curtis Amy's Mustang lp last Sunday at a record swap. It's really great in a funky way. I wasn't hip to him until a saw the Mosaic Select on him. When I saw Mustang at the swap, I knew I needed it. Highly recomended.
  7. I went to a local record swap today, so I came home and played a bunch of stuff. Randy Weston's Carnival Weather Report's I Sing the Body Electric Woody Shaw's The Moontrane Curtis Amy's Mustang Steve Kuhn's Trance Andrew Hill's Grass Roots Wooh, I'm tired. I still have a couple to go. Life is good.
  8. I agree with the other person who said it was their best. I love Abraxas and III, don't get me wrong, but I listen to this album by Santana more than any of their others. A masterpiece indeed. I too am a fan of Shrieve. I followed him through Automatic Man and that other jazz/rock kind of band, the name escapes me at the moment, and that trio album he did called Stilleto. That one might sound a little boring to me these days, but there was a time when I thought it sounded pretty cool.
  9. Wow! That's two jazz musicians I share a birthday with. The other is Jackie McLean. I saw Dewey at The Grace Cathedral in San Francisco a few years ago. He was great.
  10. Sadly, it's actually a studio record. But yeah, excellent stuff. I'll throw it on later today... that and the ICP variant of that tour, with "Eeko" on side two. Live in the studio? There is a small audience applauding at the end of some songs and after Dolphy's flute solo on You Don't Know What Love Is. Am I missing some informantion or misunderstanding your post? BTW, terrific album indeed. He had so many good albums, I'm not sure I could pick one out as his best. Are there any to avoid? I love the cover of the album too. Cool drawing and great pictures of Eric on the inside that make owning the 12" version worthhile.
  11. That AT album is a smoker, isn't it? Of course, the Hill album isn't exactly chopped liver either. Yep, the AT is an excellent album. Very under-rated ! And hard to find!! at human prices I got mine from a friend for 50 cents. No, I'm not kidding.
  12. After listening to The Healer, I am ready to return it for a store credit. It sounds like an amateur trying to play outside. Lots of whistling, clicking, honking that sometimes passes for ideas or inspiration. Randy Weston is more of an accompaniest and not an equal partner in this project. In Blue Moses, David plays some melodic passages in a slightly different key than Randy that I guess is supposed to pass for edgy/avant garde. The only problem is that those melodic passages are so elementary that they bored the crap out of me. Why Randy didn't get more solo space, I don't know, but Murray didn't do much in the way of holding my attention. It's not like I don't like him either. I have Special Edition and Ballads under his own name and a Bobby Battle Quartet album on Mapleshade that I like a lot. I own a lot of Ornette Coleman, John Tchicai, Cecil Taylor, etc. so it's not like I'm unfamiliar with outside music. One of the most disappointing music purchases in a long time.
  13. I just picked up a copy of The Healers on Black Saint mainly because I'm a big Randy Weston fan. Then I find this thread on David Murray. It's been quite interesting reading everyone's comments on DM. I don't really know his music very well. I only own a few of his albums, but when I saw this record in minty condition, I couldn't pass it up. It'll be more interesting to listen to it now that I've read all this stuff, good and bad, about the man.
