  1. Look to the cookie.
  2. FWIW, I'm playing with a local big band tomorrow (Monday) night at the Blue Room which is in the 18th/Vine district. I hope you can come by! The band plays from 7-11. Be sure to come up and introduce yourself! -Paul EDIT: If that doesn't work out, maybe we can hook up with Spontooneous and Rooster and do lunch sometime this week! Maybe we can even convince Rooster to finish up that blindfold test..........
  3. It figures. Just when I was really pumped for a new release it gets all jacked up. So now I'll have to wait not only for the Miles but also the Monk/Trane (since I had them shipped together). Maybe I'll just cancel the Monk/Trane (and the Mehldau) from my order and get them locally. I definitely won't cancel the Miles since I got it for the lower price. I'll be curious to hear what this latest Cellar Door delay is all about. EDIT: I just made myself feel better by pre-ordering some October 4th Conns. Now watch that order get backed up!
  4. Yes, I forgot that he had passed. Sorry.
  5. h A p P y B i R t H d A y R e L y L e S ! ! !
  6. They came out fairly recently (within the last 2-3 years) so they should be available.
  7. Pee Wee w/Basie (scroll down page)
  8. Bummer....glad you're OK. Insurance cover this? A couple winters ago I was driving on the interstate and went under an overpass just as a snowplow was clearing the snow off of it. A big load of wet snow (with rocks) slammed into my windshield and I'm amazed it didn't crack. I swear, it's amazing that we get through the day.
  9. Don't overlook these! I'm on 'em too....but you should get 'em anyway!
  10. ... just an expression of support.
  11. Did Barry Harris play with Bird? How about Tommy Flanagan?
  12. YOU GO GIRL!!!
  13. I think it was common knowledge to the musicians once it became an issue. A lot of the initial blame fell on a man named Abe Turchin who "managed" the band for quite awhile. He was withholding taxes from the band members' checks, but instead of turning this money over to the IRS he gambled it away. When Abe passed away it became Woody's responsibility, and I think Woody had been only marginally aware of the depth of this hole he was in. He was very loyal (to a fault) to those that worked for the band, and most likely looked the other way to some degree. He trusted his management because he wasn't as interested in the business end of things but didn't always put this trust in the best of people. Even as late as when I was on the band (80s) there were problems, and I learned later that band manager Bill Byrne was frequently paying the guys out of his own pocket. Bill really held the band together during the last 20 years or so- it probably would have not lasted as long as it did. Woody's age and health problems were catching up with him by the time I joined the band, and I can't help but think he continued to tour when he would liked to have been taking it easy. Unfortunately his debt to the IRS meant that they could seize assets at will, so he was better off staying on the road where he could at least stay in nice hotels, eat nice meals etc. Did he bring this hardship upon himself? To a significant degree, yes. Did he deserve the treatment he received in his last years? Definitely not IMHO. Sorry for the off topic...........
  14. I thought of him because he was dating a member of the Santa Fe Opera orchestra (my wife's summer gig). I was surprised he was still around. We had this record at home when I was a young'un. I didn't know he played oboe until I saw his name on the Bird recording. EDIT: I know the thread is about actual "disciples", and we're just listing anyone who played/recorded with Bird. Still interesting, though.
  15. Woody Herman got run over by the IRS, not a train.
  16. Mitch Miller! Yes, he's still around!
  17. Not Oliver's greatest moment, I have to admit. ← But far from his worst. I admit I kind of like those tracks.
  18. I hope I don't have to cancel my order because I was able to get the low "mistake" price. I have it on the same order ("ship together") as the new Monk/Trane, so this will probably be hung up as well. Shit! Anyone know what's going on? I checked other sites and saw the 9/27 ship date was still there. It's been reviewed a lot already, so copies have apparently been circulating.
  19. Potential bad news fellas. The info for this at CDUniverse now says "release date not determined". I'm pissed. WTF?
  20. Uh oh. I just checked on my order at CDUniverse and the Cellar Door info now says "Release date not determined". I wonder WTF is going on.............
  21. Indeed! Glad to have you.
  22. Sorry. Obscure Beatles reference.
  23. Another lovely Rita.
  24. She's lovely. Is she a meter maid?
