If you're interested in Tonight Show Band arrangements--Bill Holman, John Bambridge, Tommy Newsom, etc.--I can probably help you out.

WOW! Very nice performances on your website. Six selections--full length. I'm impressed.

Does anyone have a collection of his charts (arrangements)? I've been able to acquire only about four or five.

Can anybody fill me in on big-band arranger, Don Schamber? I was impressed with the Schamber arrangements that Rob Parton recorded on his newest album, TWO DIFFERENT DAYS. I can find his arrangements here and there. However, I can find almost no information about Schamber, the man. He seems to have been--perhaps still is--an academic. Is he stiill living and writing? Apparently some of his arrangements also appear on Pete Petersen's JAZZ JOURNEY album. If you have this album, I'd appreciate knowing which of the selections are arranged by Schamber.

John Graas. . . Brings back memories. In the 50s, I wrote about a dozen composer-arrangers, telling them I was a young musician who was starting up a jazz group and asking if they could donate music to the cause. I heard only from Bill Russo and John Graas. John was kind enough to send me autograpphed copies of "Allegretto" and "Andante." Yes, I still have them! My group never performed them, but they didn't go to waste. By a little "reverse engineering," I made scores from the parts and learned something about writing for small jazz groups. Thanks, John. (I hope I had the savy to thank him!) -
PM send re: Bill Holman's "Jive for Five"

I was expecting to hear somebody say that the reason Chet is not as well regarded as others is that he and Miles Davis were in the same bag and that Baker pales in comparison. Personally, I prefer Baker. His melodic lines sometimes give me chills.

Identify: Bill Russon

For Buddy Rich? Yes, indeed. On The New One, he contributed "Standing Up in a Hammock." On Big Swing Face,it was the title piece. 555 Feet Tall is a super album, one of those "sleepers" that haven't been widely recognized.

Tonight I was saddened to learn from an acquaintance of Bill Potts that he had died on Wednesday at his residence in Florida, possibly the result of an accident. No further details are known. Another great jazz composer and arranger silenced. May God bless the jazz soul of Bill Potts.

Would some kind soul please list the coded arranger information--e.g., NH=Neal Hefti, FF=Frank Foster, QJ=Quincy Jones, BC=Benny Carter, EW=Ernie Wilkins. There are several others I can't decipher.

Does anyone have current information on big-band leader, Ray Anthony? Google isn't really helpful. I know that he's getting up in years (born in 1920). Is he still actively playing? Does he still front a big band in California from time to time?

This DVD was highly recommended to me. Looking for confirmation!

Is anybody familiar with this big band DVD? Recommended?

I have the RCA Victor vinyl of Portrait of Shorty, dated 1958. Recording dates are not cited. Just to be sure we're talking about the same material, the album to which I refer is detailed here: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&t...10:xpez97wjkr0t Harry "Sweets" Edison is not listed among the personnel. In addition to Shorty, five trumpets are listed: Al Porcino, Conrad Gozzo, Don Fagerquist, Conte Candoli, and Pete Candoli.

"Saints," a Marty Paich arrangement, is on a Tops album recorded by Dave Pell and titled "When the Saints Go Marching In."
-
Dave Pell Recordings: 1. You can probably find some of these album titles listed on All Music Guide. Some of these album listings will have the individual tracks listed. 2. Go to Dave Pell's website: http://www.davepell.com You can listen to sound bites from about 150 of his recorded tunes. 3. With arrangers like Bill Holman, Marty Paich, Bob Florence, Johnny Mandel, Shorty Rogers, and Med Flory, it's hard not to like this material. 4. However, expect a bit of fluff. For years, Pell did the college circuiit.
