  1. Thanks for your.response. Actually I know a little bit about the man. I played a few society dance gigs with Roland in his elder years. My question is a little more generic: How does one go about searching for older recordings? I've tried Google search, ebay, Discogs, Amazon, Dusty Groove. Are there places where I can search inventories? Are there any other options than journeying to thrift shops and stores that sell but don't inventory second-hand CDs and vinyl recordings?
  2. I advertise mysel as a "music sleuth and conservationist," primarily helping people to find out-of-print and unpublished big-band arrangements. Today, however, somebody came to me with an unusual request: Can I help them find and acquire old-timey audio recordings by the Roland Cumberland Orchestra? How would one go about doing this? Are there repositories of older recordings that I might contact and search?
  3. Ah yes, but only far-off for my equipment. My first exposure to jazz was when I was in my early teens. I'd go upstairs to bed at night and unbeknown to my parents, I'd slap on my plastic headphones and tune in the Harley [Brinsfield] Show on my homemade crystal set. No, one couldn't pick up very much on those rudimentary crystal sets, but I could see Baltimore's WBAL AM broadcast towers from my bedroom window. They were a beacon for the attention of my ears. For a while, Brinsfield's son attended the same school that I did.
  4. Gunther Schuller's "Music for Brass" is a spectacular piece. In my youth, I must have listened to it a hundred times. I had the good fortune of hearing Schuller conduct it in concert. In the same concert, he performed one of his pieces for 16 French Horns. Yes, 16!
  5. You'd feel warmer if you played with your hands crossed plus you can always light the candles.
  6. Sad. He seems just right for night clubs. Or are night club audiences today too busy talking and using their devices to pay attention? Seems to me that he leaves big shoes to fill. Who's in contention to succeed him?
  7. i tried to place an order with a company in France but they told me they weren't shipping to the USA during the pandemic. I don't know whether that's national or pertains only to that company.

    Apostrophe

To get back to the complaint. "Musician's Forum" is an incorrect heading. Shrdlu is correct in observing that it should be the plural possessive "Musicians' Forum," not the singular possessive "Musician's Forum."
  9. Not sure this would work but might be worth a shot. . . Have you tried putting some chunks of the article into Google? It's possible that a segment of the article has been quoted by someone else and that that someone gives a concrete source.
  10. Does this vinyl album identify arrangers? I'd like to know who arranged "Gloomy Sunday."

    John Carisi

In my library are a couple charts that John Carisi arranged for Urbie Green: "St. Louis Blues" and "Summertime."
  12. I'm an easterner, but I was quite enraptured by West Coast jazz when I first became interested in jazz in the 1950's. In effect, Sandra's stories reopened the Lighthouse doors for me and reacquainted me with my early musical influences.
  13. Let me just say I'll miss AAJ. I was a regular reader for about the last five years, a browser. I read much of the content but wasn't much of a contributor. I'll especially miss the more technical examinations of music, though I hasten to say that some of them went over my head. As for the personal disagreements and squabbles, who cares--simply ignore them and move on to the next thread.
  14. That would be neat. Yeah, I'd be grateful to have them. Thanks, Doug
  15. Published back in the day by WB Music and D'Accord Music.
  16. Of the Thad Jones arrangements that Count Basie recorded, I have (or have access to) "Can't We Be Friends." "The Deacon," "Fools Rush In," "Makin' Whoopee," "To You," and possibly "Mama's Talkin' Soft." Some of these charts are published; some are unpublished transcriptions.
  17. Jeff - I might have a half dozen of the charts that Thad Jones wrote for Count Basie. I'll compile a list and get back to you. - Douglas
  18. I have both the Superscope and the Marantz. I've used them for years for transcribing. I have an acoustic piano that's stayed in good relative pitch for not having been tuned for 25 years, but it's gone a little flat. The Marantz enables me to tune the recording to the piano. The half speed is great for transcribing rapid and complicated passages. One thing I worry about, however. Does anybody repair machines of this vintage?
  19. He will be missed but his music is enduring. I'm fortunate to have been able to collect about a dozen Horace Silver arrangements, combo and big band.
  20. Thanks for the mini biography. I don't know that Don Schamber's arrangements were ever recorded by the really big name bands, but he was certainly a very deserving writer. You can hear several more of his charts recorded by Rob Parton's big band. I've taken a real liking to his charts. Another unheralded composer-arranger whom I compare Schamber to is Carroll DeCamp.
  21. I have a broad array of Shorty Rogers print music from solo transcriptions to lead sheets to duets to combo to big band arrangements. If there's anything you're looking for, you're welcome to inquire if I have it.
  22. Lazaro - Sent you a response by PM about obtaining a copy of Gerald Wilson's "Perdido" recorded by Duke Ellington.
  23. I can tell you how you can obtain a good transcription of Gerald Wilson's "Perdido" if anyone's interested in acquiring the big-bandchart.
