  1. Report back on the packaging as well, if you don't mind.

I'd be curious about the quality and contents of that on these 'CDR' type reissues.

    I'm curious too.

Great compilation by the way. At first it seemed weird, but if this is a way to keep good music available, maybe it's for the best.

I'm a lot more encouraged by this than I am by the whole download thing, if the packaging matches the original CD and if there is a legal secondary market for them (meaning I can resell it if I decide I don't like it and don't want to keep it).

I don't know if a secondary market will exist , how would someone know if you didn't just burn it yourself ?....and is it

any better that Amazon or who ever burned the disc ?

  2. And the winner is ... DUSTIN PEDROIA ... pretty comfortably over Mourneau, with Youkilis third. So that means that the guy who "swings too hard" and looked overmatched when he first reached the majors has won a Rookie of the Year and followed it up with a Silver Slugger, Gold Glove and MVP.

I can only imagine how he's going to mouth off now. :g

That is Excellent News , Good for Pedroia !!!!!!

I have to admit when he first came up i did not think he was the right guy to play second.

Even Remy was not impressed with him , its amazing what he has accomplished in 2 years.

  3. Ok wise guys, laff all you want, but if you think you'd have the beloved Steely Dan (or at least Steely Dan in the form they took) w/o Linda Ronstadt, think again.

First of all, I respect your logic and your reasoning, and I think I know where you're coming from (i.e. the ONLY reason I like Foreigner's Double Vision is simply because it was one of the first rock records I ever bought. I tried listening to it with the attitude of not having heard the record before. My reaction, naturally, was one of revulsion. This record truly, TRULY, sucks, as do most (aw hell, I'm on a roll, let's just make it ALL) Foreigner records); in other words, I get the part about things being a product of their time.

But that ignores the fact that, especially in Ronstadt's case on these two tracks (which are both live, BTW), the performances are absolutely, mind-bogglingly BAD. It's as if they spent all this time and money on production values but completely forgot about the song itself! I'll grant you that Abbey Road had a shitload to do with that, but that doesn't make it any less enjoyable. Shawn is dead-on about Queen in this respect: the songs may be shit, but DAMN do they sound nice! For my money, the radio can't play "Fat Bottomed Girls" enough for my taste; sure it's a stupid song, but that drum sound totally KICKS ASS!!!

In other words, I dig that it's totally subjective, but in Ronstadt's case, it would've been nice if she'd maybe dug just a little deeper than the surface of the songs she was butchering.

Al, have you heard Linda's versions of these songs .....Rock me on the water (which i prefer over jackson browne's) Willing, and she does a nice version of Neil Young's Birds.

I think the songs you mentioned are the overplayed hits of the day like "when will i be loved" there is a lot more to her than that.

  4. Can anyone name a finer, more mature, final musical statement, in any genre, than "Abbey Road"?

    "The world of Hank Crawford".

    MG

"Minnie The Moocher's Wedding Day", by Horace Henderson (members of the group include Henry "Red" Allen and Coleman Hawkins)

I thought so. Can we now move on from Beatle bashing?

I am not bashing the Beatles with my Horace Henderson remark. I owned all of their albums as they were coming out and played them a bazillion times. They were huge in my life when I was young. They were huge to everyone, as I remember. I still like their music and think that they were really good. When I listen to their albums now, I am struck by the attention to detail and high quality throughout.

I just think that Abbey Road is only one of thousands of recordings that is fine and mature.

Fair enough. But I said "final" musical statement. That is, a last album made by an individual or group of musicians.

I have just gotten really tired of the Beatles being called "shallow", directly or indirectly. The high quality of their music still comes through to my ears today, even after all these years of mostly jazz listening. And, fwiw, they sure as hell beat Elvis AND a poke in the eye with a sharp stick anyday :)

I love Macca , BUT I LOVE ELVIS waaaaaaaay more than the Beatles.

  5. Who would take Lowell at this point especially with this recent surgery ? I say sign Teixeira and keep Lowell .

Lowell probably won't play a half season at third so keep him for his bat off the bench , his leadership and the occasional

    third base replacement.

Believe me the Sox have $$$$$$$ they are loaded.

What are they gonna do for SS ?

The talk around town that i have heard is do they take a chance on Derek Lowe again or go after Burnett ?

  6. Interesting talk on the post game with Jerry Remy last night. Remy said this series was lost in the first two games at

Fenway he called the whole team flat and the atmosphere was also quite flat ( too many championships? sox, pats, celts)

There's only so many teams that you can spot a team a 3-1 edge and come back and win. Who knows but when you've won a title the year before one three years before that, maybe it takes the edge off a little bit. Still, they made it interesting.

I'll be honest i think it takes the edge OFF big time. In my opinion Red Sox nation has never been the same since these 2 championships. They might have saved us this year , give us something to moan and bitch about over the loooooooong winter.

  7. I'm shocked to hear all the Philly being the favorite team talk here! All the folks on the post game panel seemed to be for the Rays. I think their biggest problem will be thinking they have already won the WS....Phillies may win it if the Rays are too agressive against Hamels and Moyer. If they pretend they are still playing the Red Sox, they will likely win it. I just hope whatever happens, it's not over in 4 or 5 games...

There is something about the Rays it just looks like they are destined . And every time this year people have been waiting

for them to collapse and they DON'T .

  8. Interesting talk on the post game with Jerry Remy last night. Remy said this series was lost in the first two games at

Fenway he called the whole team flat and the atmosphere was also quite flat ( too many championships? sox, pats, celts)

He also said there would be some major shake up with the team .....like who or what? The team seems pretty set if Lowell

can come back from todays surgery.

Make some major trade like with Drew or even Ellsbury ?, who really fell out of favor . I am thinking at this point that

Wakefield , Cora, Timlin , Kotsay, Casey maybe DelCarmen are all gone . Remy also thought that some team might give Varitek a 3 year deal with a one year option ????????....who would do that ?

I really think that here in Red Sox land we have really given Varitek a huge pass , i know he is really great at handling the pitchers . But last night those last three in the order were easy outs .

Remember when the Sox always had a Big Right hand bat off the bench .

  9. I WILL DANCE IN THE FUCKING STREET IF THAT WAS THE LAST TIME I WATCH VARITEK FLAIL.

You're kidding, right? A 3-1 game, tight all the way to the end; can't you acknowledge that maybe the Rays played a helluva game and did what they had to do to win, and just tip your cap to them? Yes, I know if you're a Sox fan this is heartbreaking, but damn man, it's not like this was a blowout, or a come-from-behind bullpen meltdown, or anything else even remotely embarrassing. IMHO, this was a game that was fought to the bitter end, and the only reason it ends is because eventually one team wins and one team loses.

And give me a break about being programmed for failure. Your team has won how many World Series in the last ten years? More than BOTH of my teams (Rangers & Cubs) COMBINED!!!

The Red Sox a pathetic failure my fat ass. Give it a rest already.

Al you are so right , Dan we played our hearts out, we won the WS last year and with all these injuries to still

make it to the 7th game of the ALCS .......WOW !

  10. That was NOT strike 3 ....That was not a STRIKE ......

What the fuck are you talking about?????

HIS FUCKING BAT HEAD WENT A FOOT BEYOND THE PLATE!

Once again, nauseating, pathetic failure. Two on and nobody out, the asshole Garza out of the game, the fucking pathetic bullpen BEGGING to be given the chance to blow up, and they still fail.

I did not see it , i must of missed the replay ....he really went around ?
