  1. There's a huge difference between a first string catcher who can't hack it any longer and, having lost the starting catcher for an indeterminate time and having the third and fourth string catchers out of spring training be on the DL at Pawtucket then losing the backup, thus leaving you with a fifth string catcher and a career minor leaguer to try to hold down the fort. On top of that, there is a level of comfort between certain pitchers and Varitek (Dice-K, Beckett, Buchholz) which is now gone.

How would you feel if the Yankees lost Posada, Cervelli, and the next two catchers on the depth chart? Even with the depth the Yankees supposedly have, I suspect you'd be mighty worried if the fifth best catcher in the system was going to be a full time starter.

Yes and with all that being said we WIN tonight and are only a half game behind the Yankees!

When is Beckett coming back?.....is it unreasonable to think that Beckett, Ellsbury and V. Martinez will be back after the All Star break?

  2. And with tonight's win, Boston is now 7-0-3 in its last ten series. So its basically been over a month since they lost a series which isn't too shabby. Pedroia is pulling out of his horrific slump now that his knee is better; Dice-K will throw a bullpen soon and should come off the DL as soon as he's eligible and Beckett is finally reporting no concerns with his back.

If they ever reach that state it would be interesting to see how they perform with Ellsbury on the field every day and Beckett pitching every five days (so long as he pitches like he's supposed to). Thank God for Lester and Buchholz and Ortiz and Beltre.

And Manny and Mr. Torre return to Fenway on Friday. I have a feeling Manny is going to get booed and Joe will get a nice warm round of applause.

On the NESN pre-game show they had a stat that claimed the Red Sox have the best record in all of MLB since

    April 20th.

Thats pretty amazing especially considering all the different outfielders that have filled in and Beckett missing

what now, a month?.....and they still need some bullpen help you can't use Bard in every single game or he will be toast by Aug.

  3. Oh, and how about Adrian Beltre, who has single-handedly broken 9 ribs of Red Sox left fielders? Since the bats are going to work again they should enjoy this while it lasts. But Ellsbury broke another rib when he played three games before going back on the DL and is now out until the ASB, minimum. And Hermida now is out too after his ill-fated collision with Beltre's knee. And Dice-K is gone for at least 15 days, Beckett has just now started a throwing program and is gone til the ASB. What the fuck are they going to do? They have exactly one decent pitcher at Pawtucket, and he's a 21 year old I am pretty sure they don't want to rush this much: Felix Doubrant.

They could call Casey Kelly,? Sometimes the Sox do crap like that remember Cla Meredith,Craig Hanson they called both

of these kids up before they were ready.

What happened to Bowden????.....I thought he was one of the TOP pitching prospects I never hear his name anymore.

The Ellsbury thing is very interesting the media up here are obnoxious (as if that would be a surprise to anyone).

The guys on EEI and CSN are all over this kid calling him soft and he won't play with pain ..jesus then he finds

out he did more damage by playing.

  4. If they can win a couple in St. Pete and get a little Mo-Jo going, and the Yankees continue to struggle, who knows? The real fly in the ointment is Toronto. Just get past them and wave at the Yankees as they continue to fall past you, next thing you know you're within striking distance.

The Rays are going to hit a bad stretch at some point. The pitching staff is just not going to be able to maintain this pace.

    :w

Red Sox are now 1 1/2 games out of the wild card slot.

    Ahead of Toronto ...

    Pitching and Defense......

  5. So, Boston went ahead and signed Adrian Beltre for third this year. An okay deal, though I think Beltre will put up better numbers than expected, but it will be interesting to see how he handles the pressure of Boston, after easy press in LA & Seattle. Just think, in about seven weeks, spring training starts -- I'm so sick of football.

And the Sox traded Kotchman to the Mariners.

  6. From Slate:

    Geezers win! Geezers win!

They are a very old team--that's why this championship feels very different from the 1996-2000 titles...much more like a last hurrah, at least for the old guard of Jeter and company.

If Philadelphia picks up another decent starter in the offseason, I'll give them very good odds of taking back the title from the Yanks or whoever else the AL ends up sending to the WS in 2010.

I hope it's the last Hurrah !!!!!........how old is Rivera, 85? at some point he has to lose it.

  7. (snip)

MartyJazz, Dave, other NY fans--did the Yankees exorcise the demons of 2004 tonight? I feel like they did. And 2001, to some extent, as well... that meltdown at the end of Game 7, after the incredible 9th-inning home runs in Games 4 and 5, all coming in the weeks after 9/11 (I'd say those HRs in my top 5 of all-time incredible baseball moments, emotionally enhanced considerably by the atmosphere of the city and the crowds at Yankee Stadium) always felt like a sad, wrong ending for the O'Neill/Cone/Brosius era. Even if Pettitte/Jeter et al never win another championship, I feel as if they've finally put the right punctuation mark on the story of their careers. And with that said...

Can't wait for the hot-stove thread!

Losing the 2001 Series hurt especially since Mariano helped cause the loss with poor fielding in the 9th inning of Game 7 before Gonzalez' blooper hit won it. But, I was more bugged losing the 2003 Series to the Marlins, partly because I now live in southeast Florida and had to put up with the media here after, including my wife, a transplanted Yankee fan who switched to the Marlins for the Series. But also because, as admittedly, somewhat of a purist (who, BTW, detests the A.L. DH, despite what Matsui did, and would rather return to original baseball rules regarding the pitcher having to hit), I hated that a wild card team, the Marlins, a team that could not win its division, beat the Yanks and thereby became world champs.

I guess you being a purist you rooted against the Yanks in 07 when they were the wild card team.

  8. Glad the MVP was Matsui and not Chase Fuckin' Utley, the blue collar hero who is really a bajillionaire, like all the Red Sox.

Utley makes 11 million he would rank number 10 on the Yankees..Damon makes more $$$ than Utley!

Your MVP makes more money than Utley !!!!

  9. BTW, I went to the Mariners final game of the season last week and watched Felix Hernandez get his 19th win. This kid is something special. I believe he should get the Cy Young. Some think that other kid from Kansas City should get it, but with or without him, the Royals would have still sucked. Without Felix the Mariners would not have been the bounce-back story of the year.

There are rumors here in Boston that the Sox are going to make a hard push for a trade to get King Felix!!!

Really? The Red Sox better start by offering Beckett, Pedroia and a top draft pick. And even then it's not worth it. Felix is the real deal and he's only 23.

Well I think they might offer Bucholz, Youk ,Bowden ....that might get the deal done . Some of the media guys including

Merloni think that the Sox might not want to give Beckett a big deal because the last 2 years he has had these nagging injuries late in the season.

His best year was 07 and that came with a month off in the middle of the season.

  11. I'm not a Red Sox fan, but I hope that Papelbon is able to take yesterday's game as just a loss and not turn it into a career changer. He's a very good closer - potential to be a great one - and I hope he's able to keep his head on straight. Also hope the Red Sox fans will be behind him. It's to their advantage to do so.

Well yesterday during the post game show on NESN Jerry Remy wanted to know why Papelbon abandoned the split finger fastball ?

Also Lou Merloni echoed the same sentiment on a late night sports show.

This does beg the question as to why he doesn't throw the splitter any more?.....He needs another pitch and he used to throw the splitter. He is not gonna be a great closer if he doesn't have an out pitch. Like Bard who throws 100 MPH and then comes in with an 83 MPH change up.

Remy said only one Closer in the Major Leagues can get away with one pitch and we know who that is ......Mo Rivera.

  12. What is up with the First Base Umpire , you know it's really ironic with all that talk that Schilling was doing this afternoon on WEEI about how bad these Umpires were. I know Schill is a motor mouth but it was really interesting to here an ex player

talk about Umps and which ones were good and which ones were assholes.(his words)

Mike Lowell looks like my grandfather and my grandfather is dead......it's the end of the line for Mike.

With his Hip so bad why is he playing so far off the line yea I know the Sox think the Angels can't get around on Lester but they did twice pulling the pitch right down the line.

i wouldn't be surprised tomorrow night with Youk at third Martinez at first and Tek behind the plate.
