  1. The Beatles were the typical whole will be greater than each individual part.

    Couldn't agree more.

    +1 Very much in agreement.

And I think that the remasters, bringing Ringo's drumming out more prominently, underscore this point even more than previous pressing of their studio albums.

Anybody remember when Bono declared in Rattle & Hum that U2 was "more of a band" than the Beatles? I suppose it depends on how he defines "more" but however you want to look at it the Beatles came together and meshed in a way that was pretty remarkable.

I forgot which author it was (maybe Lewishohn), but I recall someone mentioning how their (Lenon-McCartney) differentstyles and desire to write great songs not only fueled competition which often led to excellence, but also worked

to perfectly counterbalance one another. Of course we have the obvious aforementioned juxtaposition of side A (Lennon) and side B (McCartney) of Abbey Road, but also even within a particular song you can see this counterpoint coming across: take "Getting Better" as an example.

It appears to be primarily Paul's song or at least he sings lead, doing justice as only Paul can to the optimistic message that underpins the tune. But then there is the critic / cynic of Lennon('s voice) interspersed in the chorus throughout.

Paul: "I have to admit its getting, a little better all the time"

John: "It can't get no worse"

Yea but the song also includes this excruciating lyric , "I used to be cruel to my woman

I beat her and kept her apart from the things that she loved".

I think the whole McCartney needed Lennon for edginess needs to be revisited it's vastly overrated. Mostly I think this has been perpetuated by Lennon himself in a lot of his post Beatle interviews just being a punk and making reference to Paul's granny music.

Surely he didn't feel that way when Paul composed the music for 'In My Life' and other various songs that Lennon couldn't finish because he didn't have some of the gifts musically that McCartney brought to the table.

Well, I just returned from the library with a copy of Ian Macdonald's Revolution in the Head in hand. With regard to the song "Getting Better," Macdonald suggests that the aforementioned reference to cruelty to woman is indeed John's contribution:

    p. 242

"Having prepared the music, McCartney invited his partner [Lennon] to his house in St. John's Wood to write the lyric with him -- hence the allusions to angry youth, problems at school, and woman-beating (not to mention the typically sarcastic rejoinder to the title phrase: 'It can't get much worse.'1

    1. The pre-LSD Lennon had been cruel to women: 'I couldn't express myself, and I hit.' During the session on 21st March, he got his supply of pills confused and found himself tripping while trying to sing backing vocals. Considering the subject-matter of the song and the fact that the drug tends to confront its users with their personal contradictions, this must have been a disturbing experience. (McCartney is said to have taken his shaken friend back to his house in St. John's Wood and 'turned on' to keep him company."

Really? Lennon was a wife beater, did he hit Cynthia? was this well known I never knew this.

what does he mean the pre-LSD so after he dabbled in drugs he became more passive towards women?..I still think it's an awkward moment in the song and every time I hear it it just sounds out of place maybe also because I know it's primarily a Macca song.

I found this on Wikipedia ;....I never heard of this before is this stuff well documented in the Beatle Biographies?

Lennon's jealousy could manifest itself in violent behavior towards her, as when he slapped her (Cynthia) across the face (hitting her head against the wall) the day after he saw her dancing with Stuart Sutcliffe

  3. On my system, which is middle-of-the-road for about $8000 or around there

You must live on a much fancier road than I do!

I was thinking the same thing. If $8000 is "middle of the road," my system isn't even a cobblestone street. More like a dusty, unpaved, country footpath...to the outhouse...

What I wouldn't give to have my system be a dusty, unpaved, country footpath...to the outhouse...mine is the Outhouse!

  4. But didn't it look like the catcher moved his glove up a little quick to try and sell it?....I think that might have made the ump question whether it was in the strike zone?

A lot people on EEI this morning couldn't believe that the left fielder didn't dive to try and catch that ball Gonzalez hit it looked like it fell right in front of his feet.

  5. Honestly, I'm all for this, assuming the price is reasonable.

Don't kid yourself about the Cd-R on demand market being cheap look at what Amazon is charging for

CD-R copies $15.99 and up . Also Warner Brothers new burn on demand DVDs start at $19.99 !, sometimes they have

a buy 5 for $50 sale but big deal these are bare bones DVDs and no matter how rare they are they should only be worth around $5 or 7 bucks a pop.

  6. Do I want/need the box the stereo masters come in, or should I save a few bucks and buy them individually at Target? Or should I wait and hope for remixes? At what point do the stereo mixes begin to serve the music well rather than detracting from it? Not feeling quite ready to plunk down my $180 (or $410 if I also were to spring for the mono masters), though part of me wants to.

It might be a long wait for Remixes......

  7. I went to Target this morning and picked up A Hard Days Night, Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt.Pepper, Magical Mystery, Abbey Road for a grand total of $69 ,I signed up for a target card which gave me another 10% off.

and with the gift certificates they gave me, The White Album cost $3.05 !

  8. Okay Dan, if chemistry isn't worth shit and the Red Sox have a better bullpen than the Yankees, care to tell us why the Yankees are in first and the Red Sox are in second right now?

I mean, my God: don't you enjoy this game at all? Or is making sure we all kowtow to your declared superiority of the Red Sox over everyone else your ultimate goal?

One of the Reasons the Yankees are in first and no one has mentioned is the fact that the Red Sox starting pitching has been Beckett and Lester for most of the second half. Who would of guessed that Dice K would never pitch again this season and it looks the same for Wake (who won 11 games before the break)!!!

Bucholz is coming along and now they are relying on Byrd for some innings ,Penny and Smoltz are long gone ...The Yankees should be 15 games in front of them!

The fact that the Sox are hanging in there and have a shot at the Wild Card is amazing!

And as for offense the Red Sox have the Most Home Runs since July 31, so they are hitting more of them than the Yankees.

  9. Did anyone see the press conference with Ortiz?. I thought he came off very well and the players union guy came off even better According to Weiner, there could be 96 players on the list, not 104 as has been reported. Furthermore, some of those are disputed. The number of confirmed positives is 83, and that includes some players who may have tested positive more than once. And in some cases, the positives could have been triggered by andro, an over-the-counter supplement taken by players.

"David does not know if he tested positive," Weiner said, "or what he tested positive for. We did not tell him he tested positive. ... His reputation has been called into question. He does not know specifically why. And he can't get the information that would allow him to offer a full explanation."

To me what everyone should be more concerned with is that the U.S. government raided the labs and offices and broke the 4th amendment.

  10. I don't see how you keep Kotchman on the bench, if can't be optioned and then brought back September 1. What is forgotten in all of this is that they sent Kotsay, their backup OF, away, and made Nick Green (NICK FUCKING GREEN, CAREER BACKUP INFIELDER) their fifth OF. What the hell do they do if Drew comes up lame and Baldelli can't play because of his medical issues?

They're adding first basemen at a torrid clip and forgetting that their fourth outfielder has a substantial medical problem and they've got no one behind him!

On top of that - they've traded Masterson away now. OK, he was probably the 12th guy in the bullpen, first out if the starter sucks but otherwise not getting the call unless they have to in extra innings. He was basically tied with Saito for last or next to last name called. But do they go with one fewer arm now?

Kotchman has to be sent down, or traded. Or someone has to be moved. Otherwise, between Buchholz, Penny and Smoltz, they are going to wear out a bullpen that is already a man short!

Bowden has to come up, and Kotchman has to be sent away.

Unless they send him down to get steady playing time and then bring him up in Sept. , But I don't think they will do that .

The Sox are really concerned with Lowell and Varitek being able to play ever day down the stretch.

Look for Varitek to go on the DL at some point , the guy has an injured neck and Beckett couldn't believe he started the game when he pitched.

  11. Kotchman might be a better fielder. Otherwise they got 4 years younger in the LaRoche - Kotchman trade and got a guy who hits LHP a bit better for average than LaRoche (who at this point appears to be a straight platoon guy). Kotchman might be better able to handle those instances where he's announced as a PH and the opposing manager then brings in a lefty reliever. This is all small stuff but sometimes it makes a difference, and Kotchman earns less as well. A million here & a million there matters more now.

Financially it was a wash the Sox added 1 million in the deal so basically its 2 million a player also Kotchman has arbitration for the next 2 years and the Sox love that he has a good OBP.

I wouldn't be surprised to see him next year at first on a daily basis with Youk at 3rd and Lowell being the platoon guy.

This deal might be better than you think....Lowell is not gonna get any better, he can barely run.

  12. And what the hell kind of deal is that?!?!

One third-string 1B for another? And a worse one at that. They couldn't get one or two mediocre prospects for LaRoche? Then they'd be even with what they gave up for ten days of having him on the roster. Maybe they are sending Kotchman somewhere else? Unless he has options left and can be sent to Pawtucket, it makes no sense.

And meanwhile, Rolen being traded to the Reds just puts the lie to that a-hole Blue Jay GM claiming that if they don't get what they want, they'll just go for it all next year with Halladay + all their other young pitchers coming back. They've got a shitty offense as it is, and they get rid of Rolen now?

We may find out how good Theo's draft people are, because V-Mart did cost TWO first-rounders in Hagadone and Price. At least it will be a little while before they make this trade look bad, if that's how it turns out.

The Indians are reporting that they want Masterson as a starter, also Carfado said that the key of the trade is Hagadone who is coming off Tommy John surgery BUT who had advanced to the #3 prospect in the Sox organization!

  13. Well, as a braves fan, I ain't exactly happy about the trade either. Kotchman was finally showing a bit of pop of late. 6 homers is pathetic, but the last 2 he had hit were really monsters, looked like he was finally starting to turn on pitches, instead of just going the other way all the time. He's only 26. Now he's a bench player, at least for 2 months.

LaRoche has had a terrible year, but has a bit more power. But, he's a free agent at the end of the year. Perhaps the braves would go with a 20 year old rookie next year(Freddie Freeman) but not likely. Sigh...not the big bat move braves fans were hoping for.

And did you guys hear about this asshole umpire????

    http://www.ajc.com/sports/atlanta-braves/c...ver-104780.html

Well Nick Carfado (Boston Globe) said that Bobby Cox was not happy with Kotchmans lack of power.

  14. Am I missing something about Kotchman? Is it possible they'll do a waiver deal on Lowell in order to give Kotchman and V-Mart time at 1B? Or maybe they just accepted Kotchman because they know he has value, isn't that much different from LaRoche and could be gotten through waivers and he'll be on the roster about as long, or even less than, LaRoche was?

Otherwise I can't figure out why they started the day with an extra every-day player in LaRoche, and basically ended the day with two extra everyday players (who play the same position) in V-Mart and Kotchman?

I realy want to hear how they are going to deal with this, and especially whether or not Varitek begins to be eased out now. FoxSports suggested that the best defensive they could put out there would be Kotchman at 1B and Lowell at 3B, with Martinez getting his ABs at C and DH.

On NESN they (Maz,Buckley) said that Kotchman will accept being a role player more so than LaRoche?.I don't know that remains to be seen.

Also of note they said that the Sox have been enamored of Kotchman for a long time ya know Theos Man Crush syndrome (remember Lugo)
