  1. That is very interesting, do you know of anywhere I can read more about this topic?
  2. I absolutely adore Thad's playing on this. I find that he compliments monk so well and it sounds like he is having a good time on this record.
  3. God I love this album so much. I'm going to go listen right now. To answer my own post from the other day... this is my super band, and they DO live up to the hype. Silver, Ware and Jones is an unbeatable combination imo. J.R and Ira could be stone-deaf and this would still sound great, luckily they are far from it! 😁
  4. I personally am a sucker for many of Mal's prestige all-star dates but I agree that he really kept the tradition going with his latter groups. He really knew how to put a band together. I think his play-style, especially after his recovery, really lends itself to bringing the best out of soloists and providing a steady platform for them to build their solos off of.
  5. My initial thinking was any group, as long as all the members are your personal favourites. They do not necessarily need to be A-listers or even future A-listers. Could be a group of nobodies but as long as you like all of them then it's your dream lineup. but there are no rules. As long as we're talking jazz we can't go wrong. Yeah that group is really up there for me as well. It's almost unfair how stacked some of Jackie's groups have been. Yeah I need to listen to some more sphere, that is a lineup very deserving of some listening.
  6. Wow I haven't heard anything from them, my hypothesis is that I will miss ornette more than miles but I'll have to give them a listen and see.
  7. My biggest pet peeve is seeing two of my favourites on the same record only to discover they don't play together.
  8. Yeah that is very true, which gives you so much selection to pick YOUR super-band. Which one of the many stacked bands has all of your absolute favourite players? Did it work or was just another all star jam session struggling to find a direction? I am more interested in forum users personal opinions on these bands, rather than simply discussing the fact that there have been numerous super-bands on record.
  9. Making a legendary band: 1. Miles gets a band together 2. Replace Miles
  10. I am curious to hear what you think think the most stacked lineups are. If you could make your own ideal band who would be in it? Has that band ever recorded, and if so, did it meet your expectations? it might also be interesting to describe the opposite scenario, bands that you wouldn't expect to fit but actually come together really well.
  11. I agree that something should take the place of familiar signposts in the evolution of the language of jazz. It helps bridge the gap between the past and the present. Though I wouldn't be mad if there was a little more blues in all jazz.
  12. I have a similar opinion to you on some things but I am a serious dynamic harmony fan. I really enjoy musicians that play avant-garde/free while still being more or less rooted in chordal bop. Dolphy and McLean, along with Sam Rivers, have this going on in my opinion. I really like Sam rivers as far as 60's "outside" players go. I find that even when he is playing outside, there is still a familiar logic to his playing that seems more rooted in hard bop than some of his peers.
  13. As I become more acquainted with my personal taste in jazz I am starting to notice some patterns in what i do and do not enjoy (obviously). Lately I have come to the realization that the bass is possibly one of the most important aspects of a band to "get right" in terms of my taste for me to be able to enjoy the music. What I mean by this is that if a soloist, drummer or even a pianist is playing outside of my comfort zone I can still enjoy the music for the most part, however when the bass isn't doing what I like it can really prevent me from listening to the music at all. What I want to hear from the bass is relatively straight ahead walking that swings heavy. Also a gut sound is VERY much preferred. This makes it hard for me to listen to many avant-garde and modern recordings due to both the frequent use of metal strings and the chopped up "free" bass lines that utilize space more like a soloist rather than providing a consistent pulse. Don't get me wrong I really appreciate what modern bass playing has done for the instrument and the art form, it just takes much more effort for me to listen and provides less joy that some swingin' quarter notes. This all leads me to ask, does anyone else have similar feeling about certain aspects of jazz? What do you need to hear in a band to really connect with the music? What makes you put down an otherwise good record?
  14. Going to be there on the 18th, can't wait!
