It had been a while, but I listened to Roberta Flack's First Time Ever I Saw Your Face yesterday. The one thing I can agree with myself at age 13: This is the finest recording ever made. I don't care; it just is.
Speaking of Roberta Flack, the "best track" I've heard lately (in fact, I've been somewhat _obsessed_ with it lately): Hampton Hawes, "At The Piano", "Killing Me Softly With His Song"...
Credit where credit is due: Ethan Iverson's blog (Do The Math) has mentioned this record more than once.... also, see (via DTM): JazzWax

Check out his work with Ingrid Jensen... some very memorable moments on "At Sea".

Found some interesting download prices on the CD Universe website:
Pharaoh Sanders - Black Unity, $1.98: Black Unity
Pharaoh Sanders - Karma, $1.98: Karma
Pharaoh Sanders - Jewels of Thought, $1.98: Jewels of Thought
Keith Jarrett - Koln Concert, $3.96: Koln Concert
Keith Jarrett - Sun Bear Concerts, $12.87: Sun Bear Concerts
Miles Davis - Pangaea, $1.98: Pangaea
I downloaded Pangaea yesterday from CDU, it's still $1.98. It's $17 (for the MP3 download! ) on Amazon, 24 credits on eMusic. Great deal, thanks mjzee!
Agharta MP3s on CDU is $4.95; like the others above, $0.99/track.
Incidentally, for anyone that cares, the Pangaea MP3s from CDU appear to be encoded at a constant 256kbit (not VBR).
And, last but of course not least.... regarding the MUSIC... DAMN. Some mind-blowing stuff.

Very good to hear from you, Joe... thanks for checking in.
Still looking forward to a cross-country skiing outing sometime... if you're ever passing through this part of Michigan, please let us know.

For anyone who still has not purchased the Holy Ghost box, ESP has a Summer Sale (until Monday August 9), it is available for $40!
A lot of very interesting items also available in this ESP Summer Sale
Thank you so much for the heads up! I've wanted this set for a while and the price is finally right. Just placed my order.
Yes, thank you brownie! Order placed.

Discography question: is the "At the Blackhawk" release the same stuff on the "Complete Riverside Recordings" box set, disc 13?
Without looking into the box set that I've had for many years, that sounds about right. Certainly, the entire original recording is included in the box as well as additional material from that engagement including at least one track where Shelly Manne is the drummer in place of Billy Higgins.
Thanks!

Wow... sad to hear this, but of course, best wishes to each of you.
When I first heard you guys play (way back in 2003!), I knew it was something special. It was great back then, and it just kept getting better...
Thanks for all the great music, guys!

New? It originally appeared on Muse and was reissued on CD by 32Jazz.
New to me!

Outstanding!!! Thanks for posting that, mjzee.
Nice writeup on Von Freeman by Kevin Whitehead: Von Freeman's Swing, Bebop, Avant-Garde Thing
Also, a new recording from Von that I wasn't aware of until today: Lockin' Horns

If it was really Big Al karma, Jim would be opening for Dennis DeYoung.

Got this one a few days ago from eMusic... very impressed!
Influences I hear: Braxton, Roscoe Mitchell, Cecil Taylor, Vijay Iyer, Barry Altschul, Mal Waldron...
Lots of provocative, interesting, exciting, beautiful, surprising, and unexpected things happening here... this record makes me smile!
Congrats, Alexander. Hope to see you guys live some time.

Dredging this one out of the archives, on the off-chance that anybody here might be attending this summer.
I'm not "for sure" yet, but I'll probably go the first week (7/4-7/9).

Try right-click, view image, then copy the URL (with the .jpg extension).

Since you have the album, why not listen to it and decide for yourself?
:tup
Why not just shut down the board and end all conversation?
You know that's not what I meant...

I can understand the logic in charging 12 credits for titles that have less than that -- if I download 45 minutes (for example) of music, does it really matter if that time consists of 3 tracks, or 12?
Album only on certain tracks not so much -- I fail to see how that is much different than 45-rpm "singles" that were available for purchase for less than the price of the entire album.
All of that aside, I find myself checking Amazon first before downloading _anything_ from eMusic. There has been more than a few times when Amazon was more economical.

Rudresh Mahanthappa / Steve Lehman - Dual Identity (Clean Feed)
Stan Getz - Captain Marvel
Wadada Leo Smith's Golden Quartet - Tabligh
FAB Trio - Live in Amsterdam
Also, there's a good "DEAL" on the "Ltd. Deluxe Version" of Natalie Merchant - Retrospective 1990-2005: 28 tracks for 12 credits.
-
Just picked up a new one from Rudresh/Steve Lehman on Clean Feed:
Personnel:
Damion Reid (d), Liberty Ellman (g), Matt Brewer (b), Rudresh Mahanthappa (as), Steve Lehman (as)
What I've heard so far sounds great... interesting combination of the two altos, plus guitar.

Von Freeman Quartet - Young & Foolish (Affinity)
next: Von Freeman - Doin' It Right Now (Atlantic)
